Microsoft looking into inappropriate Xbox 360 dashboard ads in light of creepy Evil Dead ad

On Reddit, a parent complained that a creepy Evil Dead ad, which managed to scare his/her daughter, appeared on Xbox 360′s “Home” screen despite the console’s family settings being turned on. In response to this, Xbox Live’s director of programming Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb said that the ad team is now looking into it.

Here's an idea:

GET RID OF ADS.

Snookies124355d ago

Especially when you're a paying customer signed up for Gold service... There should be NO ads whatsoever in that case. Ads are there to make money, so essentially they're making double profit by plaguing ads on the system as well as taking Gold fees.

It's a shame too, I loved my 360 back in the day... Microsoft just made a lot of bad choices in the last few years.

DarkBlood4355d ago

does the ads even work, i mean i dont even go to them or get anything from it so are they even making money in the first place?

zerocrossing4355d ago

This is what gets me with Xbox Live, if they're going to throw ads at us anyway then why make us pay? one or the other please.

sentury1114355d ago

Does PS plus still have ads if you are a subscriber?

I personally find there ads more distracting because they are constantly moving compared to the one small ad on the Xbox in the lower right corner.

MysticStrummer4355d ago (Edited 4355d ago )

"does the ads even work, i mean i dont even go to them or get anything from it so are they even making money in the first place?"

They must work well enough or companies wouldn't bother with them. I'm with you though, ads don't make me want a product. If anything they make me avoid spending money on whatever it is.

@dedicated - Definitely true.

dedicatedtogamers4355d ago

What people fail to understand is that Microsoft makes far, far, FAR more money per person from ads than they do from that person's Xbox Live subscription.

coolbeans4355d ago

"Especially when you're a paying customer signed up for Gold service... There should be NO ads whatsoever in that case."

We still act as if having a subscription saves us from seeing any ads? I certainly don't like ads, just pointing out how that rationality fails if you've ever subscribed to a newspaper or magazine.

Snookies124355d ago

@coolbeans - I get what you're saying, and I do realize some paid things do have ads. That's not what bothers me. It's when competitors in the same field give you the same services without any ads. That's when I have a problem with it.

kreate4355d ago

I think we should all complain to Microsoft.

Maybe they'll hear us out.

andrewsqual4354d ago

@sentury111 Lol what ads? No forced ads on Playstation devices with or without PAID membership to ANYTHING.

sentury1114354d ago

@andrewsqual then what's the thing on the PS when you start it up. When I turn mine on I see a ribbon of ads for games, movies and TV.

Not to mention the most distracting one, the ticker in the upper right corner scrolling no matter what page you turn to on the XMB.

Those aren't ads?

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF4354d ago

I'll remember this post from Snookies12 when the PS4 dash has ads on it, while you guys are paying for PSN+

darthv724354d ago

For the most part, the ads are generally for things that are available through the live service. so in this example of the evil dead movie, they are promoting it on the home screen as being available to watch from the movie marketplace.

some ads are just oddball ones that have the potential to reward the viewer. Like the jack links ones or the current one for speedstick (i think it was) where you earn Ms points for watching/playing.

There is a difference between intrusive ads (ones you have to watch) and user initiated ads (ones you have to select to interact with). for the most part the ads on live are user initiated ones.

We can all agree that we hate ads but i dont mind them if they offer something in return or help to promote something I wouldnt have gone searching for elsewhere in the live marketplace.

dlocsta4354d ago

@Snookies12
I have to ask, do you have a Hulu subscription or complain about Hulu? I ask because it is the same service as NetFlix but requires that you watch COMMERCIALS even though you are paying for the service. If this is not a huge problem for you then how would Microsoft's situagtion be any different? Just so you know I do have a gold membership but dropped Hulu for this very reason. I can move right by MS adds but I cannot skip a Hulu commercial.

plaZeHD4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

To be honest, it isn't annoying at all. The ads don't even pop up, you have to open them in order to watch. People are making a big deal out of it, even though they shouldn't. It didn't change a damn.

NegativeCreepWA4355d ago

Not that I like the ads, but when you pay for cable you still get adds.

Baka-akaB4355d ago (Edited 4355d ago )

Cable's tv ads actually pay for content we may or may not like .

What content do you even receive from XBL that requires ads benefits ? Free services that are free elsewhere , and services with subcriptions also available everywhere else ?

Seems to me that's just more money funneled into a juggernaut that doesnt exactly reinvest a lot in terms of content for the console . At least lately

HarryMasonHerpderp4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

This a videogame console though, not a cable box so you shouldn't have to put up with all of these ads. If you want a cable box make sure to pre-order the Xbox One though. I'm joking I'm joking!
:D

scotchmouth4354d ago

Originally cable was meant to be ad free which was why you were paying for it. It ended up going down a different path than originally intended

s8anicslayer4355d ago

Funny thing is when you normally pay for a service the incentive usually is to pay the premium to go ad free. Microsoft should clean up the dashboard from all those ads and only to hear that they want to implement more ads with the xbox one is even more discerning.

JunioRS1014355d ago

They managed to scare off gamers, but that wasn't enough to satisfy their thirst for blood.

Now they're even trying to scare small children.

That's what the article's about. About scaring children under the age of 5.

Blaze9294355d ago

you all are talking as if Ads completely run the Xbox 360 dashboard when clearly you see, there's usually only 1-2 per section in a small box.

From Major:

"”If the slot is an ‘Advertisement’ (paid placement) then it is labeled as such. All other spots are for marketing/merchandising other store content"

This Evil Dead spot was not an "advertisement", it was Marketplace promotion. So when you say "GET RID OF ADS" - you really, didn't change a damn thing. But you wouldn't know that...

NeoTribe4354d ago

A market promotion is just another word for advertising... there promoting something not even related to wtf your doing. Quit being stupid plz.

neoMAXMLC4354d ago

Nah, I wouldn't. Sold my 360 due to the lack of games, paid online service and that cumbersome dashboard.

1 or 2 PER section is actually pretty ridiculous.

dale_denton4354d ago

thank god i don't pay for live.. ads can kiss my _ _ _ sony ftw

mewhy324354d ago

Getting rid of ads is a wonderful idea!! i mean you're already paying for xbox live and that's not enough for micro$oft. They want more and more so they sell advertising space on live. I think that if I'm paying then I shouldn't have to watch the stupid ads!!!!

XboxFun4354d ago

The ADS are promoting services that are actually on XBOX.

If you knew anything at all you would know this.

neoMAXMLC4353d ago

Oh, so I can save 10 minutes by switching to GEICO on the Xbox 360?

If I didn't already own an Xbox 360 before and if you weren't such an obvious Xbox apologist, I would believe you a little more easily.

Lol, actually, call me sadistic but the thought of a kid just happily using the 360 then looking at the ad and freaking out is cracking me up haha. Just picture it.

Reverent4355d ago

That's not sadistic, that's just human lol.

Ser4354d ago

I love it, especially since I'm a huge fan of the Evil Dead movies. XD

Gamer Muzz4355d ago (Edited 4355d ago )

"a parent complained that a creepy Evil Dead ad, which managed to scare his/her daughter, appeared on Xbox 360′s “Home” screen" HUH?
probably one of the same parents who let their kids play M rated, gore filled, sexually explicit games. LOL

A Scary face is not rated R. Some people need to get a clue. If they don't like the ads and scary pics, then unplug from the internet. Problem solved. if your kid is so fragile that the evil dead pic scares them, then they're not mature enough to be on live anyway.

zerocrossing4355d ago

I get what you're saying, but honestly that pick even creeps me out haha.

ShwankyShpanky4355d ago

"Some people need to get a clue."

Put yourself at the top of that list.

If you pulled your head out of your ass long enough to actually read the article, you'd see that it was on the home screen, they had the parental controls turned on, and that the daughter was three years old. If they can't come up with a "family friendly" ad that adheres to the spirit of the "family settings," they shouldn't be putting the ads up there.

Congratulations on entering yourself in the running for the N4G Douche of the Day.

sentury1114355d ago

Well the ad was more effective this way since people are talking about it.

But seriously you are right, it should have been family appropriate if the parental restrictions are turned on.

Gamer Muzz4355d ago

Nice way to attack with insult and curse words. Your mommy must be proud. Speaking of being a douche. Maybe you should grow up and learn how to debate in a mature manner.

I maintain my position.
The picture wasn't rated R. In fact, it's fairly tame. It's the same image they showed on prime time TV when the ads for the movie ran. It's the same image that was on the trailers that can be seen by any kid looking at a computer.
Boo Hoo, My kid saw a scary face!
I guess they don't take the kid out on Halloween then either.
Don't blame me for things being how they are.

Also, In the future, if you want to offer debate, do it like an adult with a semblance of tact and intelligence. Insulting someone else does not make you superior. It just makes you look like a pompous windbag.

metaltales494354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

@GamerMuzz-you are a grow man criticizing a 3 year old kid for getting scared at a picture and you think you're the adult in this debate.you clearly know nothing about kids because if you did you like the rest of us would of realize that at that age kids are scare of everything.let say the the 3 YEAR OLD wasn't scare of the "tame picture" the kid still shouldn't of saw it if the xbox parental controls setting were working which they weren't.

ShwankyShpanky4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

"Insulting someone else does not make you superior. It just makes you look like a pompous windbag."

Your entire post, including the insulting phrase "someone needs to get a clue," comes off as a pompous and unsympathetic windbag. And you want to try to pop off with some noise about "mature" debate with "tact and intelligence," when it's obvious that you didn't even read the article. Or maybe they really do let their 3-year-old "play M rated, gore filled, sexually explicit games. LOL" Get over yourself.

BTW, if you're one of those ninnies that can't handle a hard-hitting "curse word" like "ass," maybe you're not mature enough to be on N4G, or the internet for that matter.

Gamer Muzz4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

@metaltales49
Your comprehension is seriously lacking. Go back and read it properly.
At no point did I attack the child. Nor would I. I said that it's how things are and I was right. It is what it is. I think that people here and the parents in the article are overreacting.

@chamber
@metaltales49
For the record, I have a 17 year old daughter. So, I've done the whole raising a kid thing and a fine job of it as I'm seeing my educated, well mannered, and socially responsible, daughter filling out college apps this week. SO don't tell me what I do and do not know.

@ShwankyShpanky
Sorry I'm not sympathetic enough for you. Would you prefer I live in sheltered, censorship world?
First off, I'm not the one who came in here attacking anyone. Sorry if defending my position sounds arrogant to you in some way.
You tell me to read the article. Well, I did. now you should re read my comment. I never said they let a 3 year old play M rated games, I said "probably one of the same parents who let their kids play M rated".
It was a general statement. I was drawing a parallel to the common situations where parents who complain about trivial things fail to realize what their kids see every day.
How you missed that, I do not know.
So yeah, I'll get over myself when you improve your reading comprehension skills.

There's an Irony to your last statement.
You expect me to be sensitive, yet you insult me for not approving of your rude comments.
THEN you say that "Some people need to get a clue" is insulting? Yet you have been far more insulting than that.
I like how words are only insulting or wrong when they don't support your argument.
You're a hypocrite.

@chamber
@ShwankyShpanky
@metaltales49
My original statement still stands.
Sure, kids get scared of images on TV, in video games, on the internet, ETC. A night out trick or treating will offer up many scarier images than the one in the evil dead ad. How will we shelter kids from that? Ban scary Halloween costumes?
My point is that Stuff happens. Get over it.
MS is looking into it and it'll probably be addressed. But if those parents are so worried about their kid seeing something scary, they'll have to do a lot of sheltering for the next 15 years. Period.

I'm almost out of bubbles. If you want to further debate the facts, feel free to drop me a line.

kingdip904355d ago

They could have been getting ready to watch a family film on netflix...

chamber4355d ago

You obviously don't have kids or are one yourself, they don't have to be on X box live to want to sit with you or watch you playing.

Fact is Family setting was on so this never should of been pushed to the front. The whole point of that is to filter out inappropriate things for younger kids. Even Major Nelson said he was going to elevate the matter to the people in charge of it so you know the man had a point.

"just like Sony"

Gosh you're insufferable, not everything needs to be both-sides'd. Sony's had layoffs, but nothing like what Microsoft has been doing and is continuing to do.

CrimsonWing698h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I mean, no offense, but this is why you’re not some corporate business person running a major corporation. Big profits don’t mean jobs are safe. Do you understand why things like this happen:

Cutting jobs to maintain or increase profitability, especially in underperforming divisions like parts of Xbox like other gaming divisions.

Corporate restructuring and relocating resources for strategic stability in ever changing markets and consumer behaviors.

Investor expectations and optimizing operations to maintain investor confidence. Whatever boosts stock prices and improves future margins.

And there’s many other factors at play. It’s never as simple as business doing well, everyone’s safe. That’s just you not understanding at all how corporations work and have been working since the beginning. This isn’t something that’s specific to Xbox, you can bet your ass Sony and Nintendo do this and if it’s not clear by now, game development is not a stable job nor has it ever been for many. A lot of developers are contractors and guess what happens when a project is done?

Ganif6h ago

Nintendo said they have no plans for layoffs, and you can't seriously claim that the scale of Sony's layoffs most of which involved Bungie which is self managed as even close to the same scale as what Microsoft has done since they purchased Zenimax. And that significantly less layoffs would have happened if those publishers had stayed independent. Keep in mind that much of these layoffs have been due to redundancies specifically related to these buyouts.

CrimsonWing696h ago(Edited 6h ago)

@Ganif

Nintendo:

https://gamerant.com/ninten...

Sony:

https://gamerant.com/playst...

https://techxplore.com/news...

I don’t think it’s realistic to treat Sony’s layoffs as somehow outside the norm for the industry right now. Even if Bungie is self-managed, Sony’s cuts went far beyond that like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, London Studio being shut down completely, and multiple teams across the globe took hits. These weren’t just minor adjustments.

Nintendo, I had to look up and you’re right. They seem to be an outlier, but rest assured at some point it happens. And even then there’s been layoffs, albeit a smaller amount and contractors.

Would fewer layoffs have happened if studios from acquisitions stayed independent? Maybe. But even independents have been hit hard and look at what’s happened with Embracer’s fallout, or smaller devs like Digic, Roll7, or Volition. This isn’t just a “Microsoft problem” or strictly tied to acquisitions; it’s a broader correction happening across the whole industry, and unfortunately, layoffs are a big part of that process right now.

Ganif5h ago

From your article:

"According to reports, Nintendo of America restructured its testing operations, leading to layoffs of about 120 contractors, part of a strategy for global integration.

Nintendo of America, publisher of iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda, is shifting some contractors to full-time roles for better development integration."

Contractors are not employees, and even if you want to count them as that, it's 120 people vs around 7500 since Microsoft purchased Zenimax.

In an era of game industry layoffs, Nintendo is hiring more people
https://automaton-media.com...

Nintendo CEO’s refusal to layoff staff goes viral following industry-wide cuts
"Satoru Iwata took pay cuts to ensure staff didn’t have to be let go"
https://www.nme.com/news/ga...

And as for Sony you're comparing less than 1000 total jobs to an estimated7500

Has the industry faced layoffs, yes, but that still doesn't account for the mass layoffs due to redundancies that was easily predictable, or that fact that at least 1/3 of Microsoft's layoffs and studio closures happened before the industry downturn.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

VenomUK4d ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

KwietStorm_BLM4d ago

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Obscure_Observer3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

"How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is."

Dude, what I know for certain is that a tech as old as X3D chips which is actually *older* than both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, is hardly the reason behind this new partnership between AMD and MS to build new *custom silicon* for next generation of consoles.

And yes it´s a huge announcement since AMD is working closely with MS to co-develop custom SoC which will allow backwards compatibility across all MS´s next gen devices allowing seamless integration between devices and full backwards compatibility across all generations of Xbox consoles.

I also know is that this announcement don´t have anything to do with Playstation and their strategy with AMD for the PS6, so stop comparing the two pretending that you know what´s going on, because you clearly don´t.

If Sony is working on something remotely similar, that´s remain to be seen.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer5d ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Lightning774d ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay4d ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

@crazyCoconuts That’s undeniably off-beat - but it could really work!
