Microsoft Reorganization Official, Splits Xbox One OS And Hardware

Game Informer - As we suspected earlier this morning, Microsoft has made its reorganization official. CEO Steve Ballmer has sent an email to staff titled "One Microsoft," in which he details the new way the business will be operated.

Microsoft is going through a hard day!

Cam9774090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

Yes they are, I wonder how this'll play out later on when the ONE launches. However, this may be good for them, the article, however, states it won't.

Letros4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

@Cam977 "can someone explain what this reorganization means"

MS has had issues in the past with teams working and communicating together, this reorganization is focusing on a structure within to alleviate that, and harmonize their product teams instead of pointing guns at one another. It's actually a good day for MS as a whole, don't mind the ignorant trolls.

On top of that check out the Lumia 1020, big day for Nokia as well.

DiRtY4090d ago

It is nonsense.

MS is restructuring the company and they are doing this on a pretty high level.

The shares are actually up 1.35% today.

dedicatedtogamers4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

Hopefully this will allow faster development for games and a bigger focus on core games.

The downside is that the two people in charge of Xbox have virtually no gaming experience. Julie-Larson Greene formerly headed up the Windows Division and now she's in charge of hardware (Xbox One, 360, Surface, etc). And she's also in charge of all games, music, video, basically all multimedia on those devices. The other guy is Terry Myerson who is in charge of OSs (and I'm assuming the X1 OSs, too)

So instead of a dedicated Xbox boss who reports directly to Ballmer, we have an "all in one" division that covers games, music, movies, hardware, TV, etc.

mewhy324090d ago

Well I feel like this was going to happen even before the big xbone debacle. I agree that change can be good and bad at the same time. It was clear that they needed a change when they tried the DRM thing. That clearly showed that they had no idea what their customer base really wanted. Also the heavy incorporation of tv into the xbone shows that they still don't really understand what their customers want. Change will be good and hopefully get them back on track.

jimbobwahey4090d ago

Nice, the lady responsible for running Windows into the ground and absolutely zero background in the gaming business is now in charge of the Xbox brand.

This is going to suck for Xbox One fans but oh well.

Godmars2904090d ago

Given MS's reported history, pointing guns at each other has been SOP almost day one. Hard to believe that that's going to change easily, or that its really going to effect how they conduct themselves outside the company. That they aren't still migrating from a product to a service based business model, which really doesn't provide that much service. Wants and expects to make a profit from every service they can provide.

torchic4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

@dedicatedtogamers

having the Xbox Hardware & Software divisions split is actually a very good idea.

because now the hardware team can design hardware which they think will define the future SEPERATE from the software team, who will also design OS and features which are core to what they think is important to the needs of the present and future.

then after the intial design stages the two teams will converge and simultaneously shape the next Xbox.

this is much different to what most probably happened to the Xbox One

Xbox One was IMO the result of the software people dictating the direction of the console leaving the hardware team to build their ideas around those.

it's essentially how Apple go about their business, and to a somewhat lesser extent how Mark Cerny designed the PS4.

Gasian4090d ago

@letros Off-Topic but does Nokia's new phone have earth devastating technologies or no?

Syntax-Error4090d ago

Not really a hard day, but a step in the right direction. With Steve Ballmer at the helm he will be able to readjust what Mattrick did before his departure. I think they will surprise everyone at the conference with the new revamped outlook.

badz1494090d ago

kinda ironic, no? the email was titled "One Microsoft" and the console is XBOX "One" but nothing about the console is even "One" to begin with!

the console is a 'TWO' because Kinect 2, which is a mandatory hardware is a separate device. since launch, there has never been 'One' synchronized explanation regarding their own policies as different people said different things and now even the ecosystem itself is separated between hardware and software. smh

miyamoto4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

Even in company reorganization Sony is being copied...One Sony says hi XD

It's business. It's a business. You know why there aren't any reports about all of Sonys internal doings. Because Xbox fanboys aren't lunatics, hellbent on hating a company.

Marked4090d ago

This has to be one of the more delusional statements this week. All fanboys are lunatics....same thing as a religious fanatic.

My friend you are as simple as a black and white cartoon ;)

Angeljuice4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

@WarewolfSS

You're doing a pretty good job of proving otherwise!!

Whatever, when Sony had to sell some assets or do anything to restructure it was on here. People talk about Sony fanboys on this site and honestly I see more hate from Xbox guys just cause whoever you backed "lost" in the end doesnt mean you have to come in here and be idiots. I have all the systems but I stil like Playstation better but Its stupid too think I won't buy something just because Sony has a product out.

first1NFANTRY4090d ago

funny how when the tables are turned the lil xbros all of a sudden are crying in every article about sony fanboys this and that. besides sony fanboys aren't the only ones displeased by M$'s attempt to screw the gamer.

don't cry because people won't side with your beloved monopolizing corporation.

Ha! Moving the goal posts again I see. This site was a Xbox fanboy haven in 2010 you say? Now that is funny.

Give it a month and you'll be saying back in 2012 this place was overrun with Sony haters. Give it a rest already.

Kryptix4090d ago

http://n4g.com/news/1263684...

Sony did something similar splitting their entertainment and electronic divisions. The reason is because their electronic division (televisions, mp3 players, etc) was holding the entertainment division back. (Playstation, movies, music, etc) Any positive change is welcomed, people just don't like it when a company fails to deliver. Everything Microsoft did in the past few months have stuck with us, so it's not our fault that it's still fresh in our minds because it was really that bad. But if this helps Microsoft show they can do much better in the future, then that's a positive. It's funny how you say Xbox fanboys aren't lunatics and suggesting Sony fanboys are when really though...Microsoft fanboys are currently the most delusional bunch here with the cloud and not realizing Microsoft tried screwing them over in the past months. The reason they keep getting attacked is because they won't accept the truth.

To me this sounds like layoffs pending. Well we see the console not doing as well....lets merge two departments and layoff employees in the confusion.

I would be paranoid to work for microsoft for the next few years.

warewolfSS4090d ago

Your a Sony fanboy, your paranoid already.

Marked4090d ago

What do I have to be paranoid for? I do most of my gaming on PC and I have no money invested in MS or Sony. The only thing I have to lose is respect for nitwits like yourself

JBSleek4090d ago

They are at record highs I think they will be fine.

Marked4090d ago

@jbsleek

I hope so. When large corporate companies have investors to please. Employees and their families see the brunt of the burden.

I've worked for several companies that restructure a few months before closing satellite offices and trimming extra fat.

Death4090d ago

This is hardly a restructuring. The Entertainment and Devices Division has always included Xbox, Zune, and any other piece of hardware. If Surface is underperforming, it would make sense to include it with the same group as Xbox which generates a profit for the company. That is why EDD was created in the first place. Zune needed to have it's losses offset.

Microsoft was never a hardware company. They are evolving with the times to keep profitable. By selling hardware under the Microsoft brand they have more control over their vision instead of relying on partners to do it. Their goal is to have all hardware connected to make everything more seamless. This is a good fit for their strategy.

Syntax-Error4090d ago

Layoffs? For what? They aren't in financial trouble they are restructuring the company. Mattrick leaving left a few chinks in the armor. Plus they are doing damage control before it affects the brand

Cueil4090d ago

no... it's a bottom up approach... this puts leadership in direct control of every major area and will allow for units to move independently from each other while still moving towards the same goal... also we'll have a clearer picture on who's in charge of what and people who screw up will be easier to point out.

Rhythmattic4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

Mmmm.... this got me thinking...

I wonder what would've happened if Matrick was still there?

Would've his position be redefined and in effect result in him being demoted?

I wonder if Matrick saw this coming,
or MS held of until his departure
or if its just coincidence?

Split the OS from the hardware, hahaha, good one, right at the time XBone uses a Windows 8 kernel and Xbox GameOS running as virtual machines tied together by the hypervisor. Which just happens to need 3GB of dedicated RAM space compared to the PS4 just-one GameOS needing 1GB of dedicated RAM space. Oh, this just gets better and better, lol!

JBSleek4090d ago

No one would do it. There is no price drop and there will not be a Kinect optional sku.

negative4090d ago

And it shouldn't be.

The new Kinect is an core piece of the new XBox OS. Plus many many more developers will not utilize it due to that fact.

fossilfern4090d ago

It didn't stop MS from making the hard-drive in the 360 optional, which was stupid if you ask me. But Kinect is NOT a vital.

Syntax-Error4090d ago (Edited 4090d ago )

@Fossilfern, unless you helped build the system..you dont know jack about it. Just because they did one thing before doesn't mean that's in the new structure. Kinect is no longer a peripheral. It's not like they really care about having Kinect games to compete with the likes of Nintendo. They showed no real Kinect games at E3. Ever wonder why? Kinect was bought for the technology. Try thinking outside the damn box for a change. That technology has many possibilities for the future and that's why it's an integral part of the Xbox One's DNA

Now that you´re releasing games and making big money from every gaming platform, you should double that amount and give us even more day one third party games!

Jin_Sakai1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

You’re delusional beyond belief. Businesses wise it doesn’t make sense and sooner or later they’ll be raising prices again to cover that billion they’re blowing every year.

outsider16241d 2h ago

Lucky for xbox that papa microsoft is rich.

purple1011d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

As someone else said earlier today, they are past the growth stage, it’s been stagnent for last 3 years, they are now in the money making stage, prepare to be goosed for as many dollars as possible for the least amount of content. It may not be bad now, (actually it is) but it will be soon (even worse) this year you got hellblade and starfirld and a load of other games that could be bought in bargain bins for about $5-30 and for that you pay them monthly

To add I honestly don’t know how you put up with the barrage of Xbox negativity (which is deserved). I put it down to:

A) you are being paid
B) you may have a problem thinking clearly
C) prefer rooting for the underdog, that’s a legit thing too. English people do it by default

Profchaos1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Yeah Aussies also love an underdog as long as that underdog isn't Xbox as they were too of the game with the 360 then lost their minds

I wish everyone would ignore the trolls so we can have a genuine discussion. Stop feeding it and it will go away. Even just hitting the disagree button feeds it. Thats what it wants. This is the last post I will ever post about obscure because I am feeding them now.

Sonic18811d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

Hofstaderman1d 5h ago

Correction....XBOX is already dead.

Obscure_Observer1d 3h ago

"Are you insane? You want them to double the amount when the Xbox is already struggling and losing money"

As long we get the games I couldn´t care less about a trillion dollar company losing money. That´s their business to worry about. I only care about the games.

And "struggling and losing money"? Really?

"Microsoft reports Xbox’s revenue is up 61% in Q4 FY24 thanks to Activision"

https://venturebeat.com/gam...

61% more revenue and BO6 is not even out yet.

MS will make a sh!t ton of money with that game alone in all platforms. So 2 Billion yearly invested in their *core* business is nothing!

So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period.

Sonic18811d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

"So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period."

That ain't going to happen. Just because you want it 😂

fr0sty1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

They'll do that, after creating 4 more higher-priced tiers and making the one that currently includes everything only contain games that have been on the market for 4 years.

"Gamepass Ultra to the MAX: Now only $299 per year!"

Profchaos1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

They are trying to get a return on abk and Bethesda they won't double day one we're lucky we are still getting them now that day one has been removed from base tiers

I like how they twist cannibalising game sales into "invests".

No lifetime sales with MS, they'll F-up gaming the same as streaming services have done to the movie industry and it's workforce.

Fishy Fingers1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Out of interest do you think those 3rd parties signing the deal are unhappy with the severence and have a gun to their head?

Bro probably has a PS+ sub and has library full of Epic launcher free games.

TheNamelessOne1d 2h ago

lol

Pretty much. There's a lot of hate on this site for Gamepass, but put games on the different tiers of the PS subscription, and whenever they get that free day one release, it's an entirely different tune. No talk about how this choice is killing devs.

DarXyde1d 1h ago

Do we think they're unhappy?

Umm...YES...?

They literally need to be paid up front to put games on the service. It's become a way to gain a foothold on the platform.

Do you think Atlus would launch on Game Pass otherwise?

MrDead18h ago

"Out of interest do you think those 3rd parties signing the deal are unhappy with the severence and have a gun to their head?"

I think you mean severance... and I've noticed you don't know what it means either, MS aren't firing the third-parties they're purchasing from.

"Bro probably has a PS+ sub and has library full of Epic launcher free games."

I'm not a console gamer, but yes I do have Epic with a library full of free games... but guess what Epic rotating free games every week doesn't do. It doesn't destroy lifetime sales and cut workers out of residuals. Then you bring up PS+ a service that also doesn't destroy lifetime sales as their model allows for new releases to earn.

DivineHand1251d 4h ago

There are pros and cons to everything. Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand. Services like Netflix has made it so that more studios can get a share in the profit where they can reach more consumers worldwide compared to the old days where the masses will only watch a few new titles per month.

The only negative about streaming services is that it no longer makes any sense to sell DVDs and Blu-rays though it can be argued that those persons may have moved on to building digital libraries for the sake of convenience.

The reason Xbox is doing so poorly is because they are not doing enough to be competitive. Their output of AA and AAA exclusive titles are extremely low compared to the competition and they haven't had a game of the year nominee in years.

Releasing their games the same date on PC is also hurting their console and it would have been more strategic for them to delay those releases by a year similar to what Sony does to maximize profits.

Gamepass alone is not to blame for Xbox's current position because it can be argued that if the service didn't exist and they had the same gaming output as they have now, they would be in an even worst spot.

MrDead18h ago

"Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand."

It's nothing like cable. My comment isn't a guess lifetime sale of films has shrunk to a point it's almost gone and so has the revenue it generated, that is money from competing TV networks, cable/satellite and physical media sales.

Lack of revenue transparency with streaming has meant workers job security and pay has massively diminished, earnings from residuals is almost gone for example the writer for Squid Games because of streaming gets no royalties despite series earning $900 million for Netflix, before streaming he would have royalties form lifetime sales.
Or another example Willow the series was pulled and is no longer watchable here's why: “Willow” was one of nearly 50 titles that Disney+ pulled from its streaming library in May. Other titles included the series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and the feature film “The One and Only Ivan.” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy explained that Disney was expecting to take a write-down in the June quarter of $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion by removing content from its streaming platforms. By writing down the value of the content assets, Disney can remove that from its balance sheet and reduce its tax bill." Also when you pull a show you no longer need to pay residuals to the workers.

Have you also noticed the drop in quality on sfx or thought some older films look so much better then they do now? This is because the industry now relies on cheap labour for sfx outsourcing abroad, more green screen instead of location shooting and a lot less real extras bring life to a scene.

Streaming in gaming is going to be far worse as we've seen with MS consolidating a massive part of the industry to try and make the service sustainable, lifetime sales being cannibalised by gamespass and a work force that has no unions like SAG is already paying the price.

All streaming does is remove income transparency, cuts the workers from the money and sets flat rates and removes consumer ownership... but CEO's and shareholders will still be ok as they benefit from the industry consolidation.

Huey_My_D_Long15h ago

MrDead is absolutely on fire with the post.

Nothing else I have to add other than that.

DivineHand12515h ago

@MrDead like I said pros and cons. Some of those issues can alleviated with alleviated with regulatory intervention to give more transparency to the industry but unlikely anytime soon with all the lobbying going on.

The issue with the squid game's writer can be attributed to the terms and conditions he agreed to. It happens often in business as no one really knows how popular something will be until you catch that lightning in a bottle. I remember reading about how Nintendo hardly made anything off Pokemon Go dispite Niantic making Billions.

I don't blame streaming services for studios finding was to reduce the cost of making films. That stuff would have happened regardless because of the greed of these corporations. We see that same cost reduction happening in every industry from food to Aerospace.

Vastly approaching makes no sense.

You mean rapidly approaching.

MrDead9d ago

A combined $80 billion spent on consolidating a massive part of the industry, thousands fired all to line the pockets of the already wealthy and turn the gaming industry into a rental service.

FU MS.

crazyCoconuts9d ago

MS is a publicly traded company. If you have a 401K you yourself might own MS stocks.
I'm definitely not a MS fan, but CEOs need to keep returns high to keep their jobs if nothing else. They don't get to transfer the salaries to their accounts.
I blame MS for failed strategies, poor execution, lack of vision, etc.
These layoffs are just the result of those things.

MrDead9d ago

That's the weakest excuse for a giant monopoly I've ever seen... also companies like MS are more likely to damage people's 401k through monopolistic practices.

Obscure_Observer9d ago

I love how you act all enraged and bully when it´s MS firing people.

"It´s all about the workers" at least they´re Sony´s employees, right? If they´re Sony they can go f* themselves right? It´s all justified and the blame lies elsewhere on some widespread industry problem, right? Right?

We been seeing some of Sony recent bs moves and you know what´s coming, right?

I´m expecting you to disappear the same way you do every time Sony layoff hundreds of people or get a whole studio shut down.

You´ll do anything to avoid and hold them accountable. But that's OK. You´are not biased, right?

@obscured: “ "It´s all about the workers" at least they´re Sony´s employees, right? If they´re Sony they can go f* themselves right? It´s all justified and the blame lies elsewhere on some widespread industry problem, right? Right?”

.
Well Sony didn’t overreached and spend over 80 BILLION$ to acquire mayor 3rd party game developers and one MAYOR publisher the owner of the BIGGEST FPS just hoping to keeping it exclusive to their system and now having to fire thousands of employees to valance their books one more quarter.
Now Microsoft is beginning and going to kiss Sony dark ring and publish their “first party games “ on PlayStation. Regardless of who it is it’s wrong to do an acquisition and then fire people.
I applaud Microsoft for at least giving them a severance package and assistance getting a new job 👍👍.

Chill out kid... also why bring up Sony, have they just spent 80 billion to consolidate a massive part of the industry to the detriment of thousands of workers?

MS lines their pockets whilst firing thousands, such a shame you support this.

Gee someone here said Xbox would NEVER release 1st party games on Playstation or competing platforms again?! Never tired to see you eat crow again.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Brazil we have a say that goes like this:

'May the last one to leave please turn off the lights'

What the heck is MS even doing right now?

Looks good to me and I’m glad it’s coming to ps5

When it comes to video game previews I’m of the opinion that journalists should maintain a position of CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM. Yes, note and share concerns about the game with readers but maintain a restrained optimistic stance until actually having reviewed it so that any negativity is based on the game’s quality and not the author’s prejudices.

Here the author writes “ I’m going to continue to keep my cynicisms intact, less so because of my trust in MachineGames and more so due to the dumpster fire that continues to be modern-day Xbox.” This example illustrates the need to follow this guidance.

Not worried about facial animations , but I do hope the gameplay is fun . Most definitely I will purchase this on PS5, if the gameplay is fun .

nice hit piece. I notice the writer didn't mention any of the journalists / creators who had good things to say. From what i hear, it has riddick: escape from butcher bay in its DNA. To me that sounds like something to be Optimistic about rather than pessimistic.

It’s odd to have a first person perspective for an adventure game with stealth and brawling. But’s not without precedent. Wolfenstein: New Order and Wolfenstein: New Colossus had a lot of adventure game elements. They were in the league of the greatest games ever, but they were both fun games. Indy looks fun too.

YourMommySpoils13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Yes, Indy looks like Todd Howard. Something feels way too off.
