Maybe its just me, but as a Gen X who has been in this hobby since 1977... I just dont give a crap about the corporations that make these decisions. i just buy what interests me and enjoy it. I never understood brand loyalty, so I dont have any faith to lose. I dont care if a game is exclusive or not because i always buy all the systems anyway. I like gaming too much to restrict my choices.

If anything, it seems the younger generation are too soft if they are letting corporate decisions dictate how they feel.

To be honest I fully agree with what you just said. However I will point out that if I was soely a Xbox owner. I would be annoyed and concerned. If Microsoft do in the next 3-5 years go full 3rd party (I think they will) and they do come out of the console business and focus on releasing games and maybe Xbox branded PC's. Then what happens to my Xbox digital purchases over the last 15-20 years? When they stop making consoles at some point the servers are going to be shut down what happens then?

When sega and atari dropped out the console business it wasn't to bad as there was no digital purchases to worry about when they left. With Microsoft there is 20+ years at steak.

Darth you can do both. I buy all three consoles, Every gen. I'm partial to Sony because they've consistently supplied games I've wanted and been pretty good with jrpgs(my favorite genre). If news came out tomorrow that jrpgs will no longer be represented on Playstation I'd jump to another console in a heartbeat. For me xbox has consistently dropped the ball for years. I keep buying them though, my latest was due to starfield. You can be partial to a certain system and still enjoy the others.

I am also a Gen-X-er that saw the writing on the wall after the 360. Besides, you VERY MUCH gave a crap about Microsoft and definitely had loyalty to them. Your posts don't just disappear because you grew up a little. Can't hide those stripes.

At the same time, Microsoft's most ardent fans are part of the problem. When you demand less, you get less. Nintendo and Sony fans are much more willing to call shortcomings what they are and that is a very big reasons why those two brands bounced back after their darkest hours.

As for what xb fans get out of this... business as usual. it isnt like the games they announce will not be coming to their platform. unless of course they pull a Sega and completely exit the market. It's such a weird concept to me because without one the other wouldn't be as good. Look at madden for example for what happens when no decent competition exists. I was almost always xbox mainly because most my friends played on it and I liked the controller. Now I play PC because that's where most of my friends play. To me gaming should be about fun not who can rage online about who's brand is better.

As long as they are not live services, then nothing will happen to your digital games when Microsoft stops making consoles, the only games you need to worry about are the online only games, if the game plays offline, then that means you own them, and can't be taken away

It's not going to be long before Microsoft turns into a (slightly) more competent Sega as goes full publisher mode.
But right now, they seem hellbent on replicating all of Embracer's mistakes.

I was a massive xbox fanboy back in the day (the first xbox with experiencing xbox live the first time was one of the coolest things ever, all on my finicky Linksys WRT54G router) and X360 had a wonderful dashboard, cross game chat, among so many other neat things, and I loved not just the AAA games, but the Indie scene there as well. We had Braid, Limbo, Super Meat Boy, and as a programmer, I loved the idea of putting your own game on the marketplace for a hundred bucks using their XNA C# dev kits.

...But Xbox is not what it was. It just isn't. And it hasn't been in a very long time. It's not to say that they can't turn things around, but even when they have all the potential to dominate through the sheer size of their catalogue, it's just not happening. I haven't purchased a console in two console generations after having switched to PC, but here's to hoping for a brighter future for MS.

Pointing out underwhelming games is inevitable. It's the broken promises and wish washy, intent with Xbox all through the Xbox One era. Xbox wants the big AAA games but waited late to buy studios. They wanted good E3's again but had no content to show. They want to up there software sells. Gave up on securing 3rd party and not having 1st party to show.

It comes down to not having 1st party stuff early on. They should of bought studios back during the late 360 gen but that was not in the cards at all. They had to up console engagement and sales so they made GP. If they bought studios made undeniable AAA first party and sell it and their console they wouldn't be in the mess. It's too late now they made a simple equation into a hard one for NO reason. Sure those changes and pivots would happen eventually but that wouldn't of been until later because they would be selling consoles and games still. If they kept it simple from the start.

You'll notice though that the games coming to other platforms are from the recent publisher purchases—games that were always supposed to be multiplatform when you think about it, with Sea of Thieves being the exception.

Do I think they'll go full third party? Yes, eventually. But as long as games in their "Big 3" aren't multiplatform beyond the PC/Xbox ecosystems, losing faith seems a bit much. Those are essential to the Xbox identity, and have been for ages.

However, it's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy, isn't it? The Xbox fans losing faith and not purchasing the hardware contracts the user base, which actually give Microsoft more incentive to make more of their titles multiplatform.

Don't know how all of this shakes out. None of us do and we're all speculating, but I guess I would say the most certain sign would be one of those identity titles landing on the other console(s).

Gamers are always complaining about how expensive games are. 80percent of Xbox’s sold are the s. The multiple console owner argument doesn’t apply to Xbox. The sales numbers say so. I mean, it's actually not difficult to understand. When people chose between Xbox Series X and PS5 when they were buying a console in 2020-2023, it was with the understanding that there were pros and cons to each, and that in choosing one they knew they would be missing some games only available on the other, but that they would get the advantage of having access to other games not available on the other console. When they chose to spend $500 on the Xbox on that understanding, and then MS starts announcing that, actually, those games you thought you could only get on here are going to be available on PS5, the obvious conclusion is that you should have bought a PS5, because then you could have played the games only available on PS5 AND the games MS brings over.

This really isn't rocket science. It's the kind of decision making that console buyers have been engaging in for decades.

It's actually more simpler than that. Xbox doesn't even make great games that I wanna play on PS5 in the first place. Forza Horizon is the only series I care about and even Forza Horizon 4 is better than 5.

With more bells and whistles, and soon at higher frame rates and resolution if the rumors are true. Xbox's only positive product differentiator is GamePass which has ballooned to $240/year. FWIW... exclusives had more of a place when each platform was inherently different from the next. Once they became more alike than different... they no longer needed that tired exclusive argument. And i say this as someone who remembers the days of the 2600, colecovision and intellivision. the NES, Master system, the SNES, TG16, Genesis... all of them were different and all of them had games that specifically showcased their strengths.

Fast forward to the 6th, 7th, 8th gen and things were more alike than they were different. There was not a single game released in those gens that could not have been made for the platforms at the time. the same holds true today. There is less and less platform identity now than there was 20+ years ago. So who cares if games are released on everything... seriously why is that such a big deal other than using them as some sort of way to gloat about the side you picked?

I could buy just one platform and be done with it but because of the old ways of game distribution, there is no mandate about the content being available to all like there was for VHS/DVD/CD mediums. I have to buy each (plus i am a hardware nut). We have streaming services doing the exclusive content thing now... but i have noticed that some stuff is finding its way to other service providers after having its initial run on whatever service it was exclusive to. The same should hold true for these games. Like i said, i dont care if games cross the line and go to everywhere... it does not stop my ability to play it wherever it is available because i support the industry as a whole, i dont pick a side.

Thats fine if your focus was to sell software. But the xbox is a console and in order for them to sell consoles, they need to produce compelling exclusive AAA games. However, they keep shooting themselves in the foot. How can you expect to sell consoles when your AAA games is coming out to GamePass on its initial release? Therefore to make up that loss, they increase the price on GamePass and gate keep the exclusive to a higher tier subscription.

They got here through trying to buy success instead of doing what other platforms do, earn it. Still, MS got a nice payday for a handful of CEO's and shareholders out of their consolidation of a massive chunk of the industry and firing thousands.

Don't think this is the last we see of MS's sh***y practices though, they still have full control of some of gaming's biggest IP's to use as leverage and are still wanting to turn the industry into a rental market... and no doubt are still after Steam.

first u have Spencers odd and solely "CONSOLE WAR" interviews, then the games are not coming, then u get locked out of a gamepass function that was there day one. and let's not even talk about the empty promises.

You cant jump ship when there was never a ship to start with. 99% of games are multiplat and it's gonna stay that way. Microsoft sole purpose of making big purchases is making more money. Could they keep more games to themselves? Yes, but they will make more money keeping big games multiplatform. This is the route they were always gonna go. Putting games on other platforms was always gonna happen. We already see it happening at sony as well. Unfortunately, for Microsoft they don't have the hardware sales that Sony does but if they put games on other platforms they can make up for the loss in hardware sales. Neither them or sony is making much from them anyway. And people tend to forget that Phil Spencer is in charge of xbox not Microsoft. They didn't become a trillion dollar company by not being global.

I've been playing Ghosts on my PS5 and I'm loving it so far. Making the full switch to PlayStation won't be that bad for me as I don't buy a ton of digital games.

Well to be honest what's the point of owning an Xbox now? I sold my Series X due to lack of exclusives at the time. And the exclusives now don't draw me in and say I need to buy an Xbox. XB360 even though I hate the machine has some solid exclusives. Then when XB1 came out exclusives were only a few drops or rain when compared to what Sony was pumping out for the PS4. I was mainly keeping my XB1 around because of the backwards compatibility function. Playing games I never got to play from the OG Xbox.

Xbox is no more...it's just Microsoft Gaming. Play anywhere...with anything. Xbox is just "one" of many options to play. This transition has been so smooth that people don't even realize it.

Too little, WAY too late. I have said it before, I will say it again. X Box fans are the most dumbest, most blind fanbase I have ever seen in my life. You gave MS an inch with MS not prioritizing the X Box as the exclusive platform for their games, MS went miles and you still was OK with it. ''Everything's good!'' and now here you are. If it were SONY doing this, atleast the PlayStation fans would call them out on it. This is why PlayStation is successful, the fans keep them humble. SONY will take risks sometimes and do things we don't agree with once they feel they are in an advantageous position financially to seek other avenues to build more wealth.

Idk bout the Xbox brand but before Microsoft got into consoles they used to make great games. I still hold Freelancer to a high degree and wish we got more. Xbox is done though after this gen. Why would anyone buy their console if you’re going to miss out on other exclusives. If you’re semi technically literate, get a pc instead. If you need to stay on consoles, why buy one that will have games that are available everywhere else and doesn’t offer anything better than the competition. Inferior in the case of the series S even.

He’s had 2 console cycles to make his vision work. It hasn’t and it won’t.

Microsoft isn’t Apple. They’ll never garner the type of obsession that make people sell their own kids for their products.

What it does mean is that this notion of taking less dollars to remain fully exclusive is something they no longer have the stomach for if they really ever did at all.

I personally think the industry is headed there anyway with the ballooning costs of AAA games. Except for maybe Nintendo who is immune seemingly to any economic realities when they proved that they could sell cardboard cutouts to people.

Anyway just one man’s two pennies. We’ll see how things pan out over the course of the next 5 to 10 years.

I wouldn't buy into the "balloon" narrative. It's actually the ballooning costs of "marketing" AAA games. This is the real problem. Imagine how good the game could possibly be, if 350 mil was invested in developing the game and 50 mil for marketing. But instead it's 200 mil to develop a game and 200 mil or more to market it. From here, we get reskins stuffed with microtransactions and live services.

No one wants to talk about marketing because there are a ton of parasites that make a lot of money, so what they do is shift the meaning of "ballooning costs" towards the development side of things. It's hustling 101.

The writing have always been on the wall with Microsoft. Every generation, they come in third place. Even during there best generation with the xbox 360, they still end up coming in third. They just cant compete in the console market, now you add in big missteps, broken promises, and unclear path, there is no way they will win the console market. Even with gamepass, PS5 sells incredibly well in comparison. I've been an Xbox fan and defender forever and even I've hit the brick wall. Their double speak, misleading fans, missing out on big games, putting every first party game lately out in 30fps, etc. There's just no more excuses to be made. Indiana Jones going to PS5 being the "One Last Thing" at Gamescom and Wukong breaking the Stream records and NOT being released on Xbox both happening on the same day seemed to have finished a lot of fans off.

As far as people who stuck with Xbox getting ridiculed cause Xbox has been bad for years... Fans were holding onto hope based on promises. They bought studios, bought Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Bethesda, then closed the Activision deal. It was all finally coming together and was going to pay off to fans who waited and stuck with them. 2024 was literally the year all the hype and hope had lead to, and it blew up in their faces. Xbox literally said "We finally did it, loyal fans. You stuck with us and we came through and finally got you games. And we're giving them all to our competitor!" Now to be fair there's still great incentive in getting say Indiana Jones in December on Gamepass rather than having to wait 4-6 months and pay 70 bucks, but still.

I'm pretty much full Steam at this point. I'll still enjoy Gamepass on Xbox and the Xbox Windows app. But I'm not tying my third party library to any console anymore. The next Xbox would have to be something really unique in the market for me to buy it.

I couldn’t care less what console l play games on. Microsoft’s only console success was the Xbox 360 and that came with the RRoD fiasco. The cost of gaming has been getting out of hand for years, £70+ for games, paid DLC and £200+ for controllers as examples. Phil Spencer lost it years ago. Microsoft, just put games on Sony and Nintendo consoles.

Once Xbox started up Games Pass and made its games available on xCloud, PC, and streaming services it deprecated the need to purchase a console. But this is all console warrior BS as the company itself will still makes money selling their wares everywhere. People are just upset because they cannot hold over a game over another platform. These games are still available to play for them but they just have more options as to where.

I went through this with the Sega Dreamcast. Today, nobody minds Sonic is on a Nintendo console but in those days it was the cardinal sin. Sega may crank out games today but they're nothing like what they were then. Today we can look back and see where Sega faltered and how we were in denial. Do I wish Sega were still around today? Yes I do. Making consoles? Yup. Sonic still only on Sega? Yup. But Sega died a decades ago and today it's Sammy.

There will come a time when Xbots will look back and see where Microsoft went wrong and how the corporate Xbox hierarchy played their customers to pick their pockets.
