It Felt Cheap at First, But Demon Gaze Is a Solid Vita RPG

Toshi Nakamura: "What the hell is Demon Gaze?" was my first response when I heard about this new game for the PS Vita from Kadokawa Games. The game was released on January 24th in Japan under the genre of "dungeon RPG," and almost immediately sold like crazy. Well… relatively crazy. It is a Vita game after all, and there aren't as many of those in circulation compared to the 3DS or the PSP. In its first week out, Demon Gaze sold 25,793 copies, according to Weekly Famitsu. Pretty impressive considering the initial lot was only 25,000 units. Game retailer Sofmap even tweeted that their restock quickly sold out much to the surprise of the developer spokesperson. As a Vita owner, I had to find out what the hubbub was all about.

I'm happy the game is selling well for them and the Development team that made Monster Monpiece.

Kinda funny that that one video (you know the one!) had over a million view, yet the actual strategy mechanics are solid.

I kinda knew that by looking at news coming out, but it's great that it's been confirmed by an English speaking person on a gaming blog.

If this is localized, I'll pick it up.

Between Wizardry, and Shining: The Holy Ark I'm quite a fan of the genre.

western release please.

Demons gaze should be localized and Sony should help, i mean the Vita needs game like this, a solid FP DC is always welcome.

I'm seeing euphemisms for "mediocre" and "wouldn't be worth a second glance if it had any real competition" all over the place.

A Look at All of the Turn-Based Role-Playing Games Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "If you ask the average gaming forum user, they’ll probably say that Vita was only a good place to play if you like indie games, visual novels, and of course Japanese RPGs. While I’d hope that readers of my articles have realised that the console offers so much more than this, it’s hard to deny that it built up an amazing ecosystem for role-playing games over the years, mostly spear-headed by the early release of Persona 4 Golden in 2012.

As a result of there being so many RPGs on Vita, I’ve had to split this article up. I’ll be looking at all the turn-based entries in the genre here and I’ll dedicate a separate piece to action-RPGs some time in the future. Please note – while I will be including first-person dungeon crawlers such as Demon Gaze, things like roguelikes (e.g. Shiren the Wanderer) and strategy games (e.g. Disgaea) will be given separate articles of their own further down the line."

10 PlayStation Vita Sales Success Stories

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "A recent piece of news doing the rounds revealed the PlayStation Vita’s top 10 selling games in the United States of America, and it makes for some grim reading. While Uncharted: Golden Abyss rightfully tops the list, it only managed to shift a little more than 400k copies in the States, which is low by the series’ standards and paints a dire picture overall given that it's above all other AAA titles on the list, including Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, and Ki llzone Mercenary (although it’s worth noting that this top 10 doesn’t include any bundled software, otherwise  Borderlands 2 would be at the top and Call of Duty at #2)."

I would think Uncharted Abyss and Killzone Mercenaries should be included in the list.

A beginner's guide to first-person, party-based dungeon-crawlers on the PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita has become a haven for RPGs, but there is one particular type that has really made itself at home on the system. People who love first-person dungeon-crawlers with turn-based battles and often customizable parties can find tons on the system. Developers like Experience and Compile Heart have taken to the system. This means people who enjoy level grinding and customizing characters have plenty of options to choose from when looking for a new game to play.
