Capcom comments on the mixed reviews for Resident Evil 6

Capcom’s Christian Svensson has issued a small comment in regards to the mixed reviews for the recently-released multiplatform title, Resident Evil 6.

Why is Svensson replying? Was he in the team who produced RE6 directly? He is a middle-man. He should send all reviews with low scores about RE6 to Capcom Japan for feedback on their faces, of course the translated version. Guess they don't know English; that's why they can not learn from mistakes, effectively. A bad video game franchise can sell millions, but not forever. Time is the master of change.

The problem is the casual market is not hardcore. Us lifers (39 years old started out on Pong, yes Pong) have such an attachment to the games we grew up on that any change in the formula sends us raging.

We are officially the old guys standing in the yard in nothing but old man underwear screaming at the "youngins" to turn that crap music down. It is the same with anything, really. I stop on some of the cartoons they play on Saturday and am appalled. I think back to He-Man, Batman, Scooby Doo, Hall of Justice Superfriends....now it's Sponge Bob Square Pants.

What's the point in having a scale if you're only going to use half of it?

A 50/100, 5/10 or however else you want to put it is middle of the road, mediocre, and average. Yes, it's bad when compared to that 10 or that 100, but it's not when compared to a 1. Since both ends of the spectrum are on the scale, you can't just ignore one end and say "Even though the scale goes THIS far, only THIS half of it counts." May as well just use 1-5 (or 1-50) in that case.

Average is not bad. May not be worth the current asking price. May be only worth a rental. May be a title that could have been a WHOLE lot better. But it's not bad.

@hicken That's the major problem with game reviews nowadays, but that is because journalists give bad games a 5/10 and average games a 7.5/10 so people using scores have to follow that suite. If not, we'll say bad games are games with 3/10 scores and average games are games with 5/10, but since reviews give bad games the 5/10 then we would be saying that bad games are average and no bad games exist.

People always hate on EA but atleast they have great partners programs where the developer can keep their IP and atleast they make efforts with some new IP and take SE risks. And hate EA all you want but most of their games are quality titles

To me has fallen the most this gen, coming from a caring about gamers and their games last gen to now only caring about making sequels after sequels and charging for on disk dlc or every character or skin in a fighting game. That's the thing I don't understand about fans, why force yourself and waste your money into buying games that you don't agree with. Remember, nothing is more powerful than when the game sales drop. That will get the publisher to hear your complains. Somehow too many fans still think they are going to pay full $60 and then complain. Wrong method.

I have several online friends that all have bought RE6 but I haven't. Even they asked me to buy the game now so that we can play together, my answer is I'm going to wait until the price drop first. (After played the demo, I didn't quite like everything they did to the game).

At just 3 hours into Leon's campaign its already a solid 8.5. I don't like how almost everything has Case sensitive button prompts but I'm getting use to it. I think they looked too much at Uncharted. Uncharted had just the right amount, perfect balance but this has way too many in trying to be cinematic. But I like it. It's pretty good so far.

Playing RE6 isn't needed to know it's just another one of the furthest from original concept games that exists...

RE4 is exactly should have been the new normal for this franchise. Old-school survival horror is a small niche market, but RE4 and Dead Space showed that there's a large market out there for horror-based action games.

If you think about what RE4 and Dead Space did that made them successful, you think about great atmosphere, excellent pacing, tension, and good game mechanics (RE4's controls are dated now, but they were good at the time).

RE5 had none of that. Instead it had forced co-op and zombies on motorcycles. It sounds like RE6 is even worse.

In other words, Capcom doesn't even seem to understand what made RE4 a great game, with the result being that they moved away from all the stuff that worked and added stuff, like co-op, that made the game worse. If they were deliberately trying to ruin the franchise, they would have made roughly the same decisions.

Most of the reviews complain about things like controls and slow-pacing, zombie killing etc. Not that the game is not 'old school'.

Supposedly the plots pretty incoherant as well. In all likelyhood this is probably the last 'regular' resident evil game were likely to see. I imagine future iterations in response to reviews will be much more focused on the action and co-operative aspects like RE5, and much less on horror like 4 or previous. R6 seemed to take a sort of middle-ground and as a result upset fans of both the old and new-school resident evil, hence the mediocre critical reception.

Same here, they lost Inafune, Okamoto, Mikami, Platinum Games formerly known as Clover Studios, I've never heard of any other publisher that would lose as many talented developers as Capcom.. This is why they're opting to western development, Capcom is almost becoming a western company, cause after Resident Evil, a lot of the new announced IPs are made by western devs, since it was being known since the beginning of this gen Capcom USA is taking more control over Capcom Japan.

I think Japanese devs are getting a lot of pressure from publishers & the media to try to make the game appeal to the western mainstream. It got to a point where there's less love for working on a game. Unlike past gens that gaming was hard but at the same time enjoyable... & like you said, every developer & publisher is targeting at the idiotic & stupid COD fanbase.

Hmm. I've been a day one purchaser of Resident Evil games since '96. Until now. I'm torn between the mixed reviews. Metacritic shows 14 Positive reviews, 5 mixed and 1 Negative for the PS3 version. Has anyone actually played it yet and is it any good? And no, I don't mean the demo, that doesn't count. Don't know whether to get this or to hold out for Halo 4. Money's too tight to mention at the moment!

I bought the anthology just for the old games and all I have played in re6 is leons and im at chapter 3 and its boring there has not been 1 difficult boss fight and the save points are jacked up.. it can save and when u turn the game back on it puts u back about 1 hr in the game wtf and this problem has been in reviews! There is no puzzles at all I mean none! This should not even have been a RE title if they wanted to do this they should of made a new series. The hit detection is jacked I would get hit and killed by a truck and literally be 40 feet away from it leons pistol is so week it's ridiculous take 6 to 7 head shot to kill and why do that when u can run around kicking zombies heads off over and over in half the time I'm playing on professional and only legit died about 4 times it's way too easy! Even the shotgun is weak I think Leon uses a arsenal of air soft weapons!

Me and my buddies all bought it and we love. Played all night long. Each chapter in each campaign is at least 2 hours long. Its fun and entertaining. GREAT WORK CAPCOM for updating this old title and bringing it into the present.

Resident Evil 6 has more action, but what makes the game great are the controls, they (Capcom) have FINALLY caught up with the rest of the gaming world and applied modern control schemes to their premiere title.
They HAD to bump up the action, the controls themselves warrant it. The old Zombies-off-the-side-of-the-ca mera wasn't going to work anymore.

The're still jump moments, but whats MOST important is that its fun and you feel like the star of the show.

You can always relieve the older titles if you wish. That's a game design of yesteryear.

So, it is all better now because you can walk and shoot? Oh, please... while I agree that this was a necessary change, the game is pure mediocrity and is still far behind every other decent TPS in the market. Furthermore, a TPS mechanics impose no barriers for a game to be tense, moody or even scary - Dead Space is there as a prove that it is perfectly possible for a game to be a good shooter with an excellent atmosphere. Hell, RE 4 was a much MUCH better atmospheric shooter than 6 is, and that is a twelve years old game.
What makes Resident Evil 6 so disappointing is not it's lack of fixed cameras or "modern controls", but the lack of the very same atmosphere that defined it as a successful franchise.

Oh! And btw, they (capcom) did NOT "finally caught up with the rest of the gaming world" in regards of "modern control schemes". Gee... not even close, what a joke..!

Most old skool survival horror games were built around limits of the hardware, RE scary door opens = hide loading screens, Silent Hill Fog = Hide pop in of distant objects.
Some clever developer needs to expoit something in modern games to throw us off, make us feel helpless again. Think i'll wait for The Last Of Us as it seems to try be more survival-ish than the last feew Resident Evil Games

Difference is with Call of Duty, is that everything about the game is the same. They've made no improvements to the graphics, the physics, the online issues etc. Also, the story is basically "kill this Russian terrorist".

With Resident Evil, it had a great survival horror formula. Sure it changed as time went on, but it turned into something it wasn't - an action shooter where you fly jets and drive cars and do drive cars... At least they got the right balance with Dead Space 2 - a brilliant story, plenty of scares and action to keep both sides happy. Chapter 10 really took you back to the first game, whereas other chapters catered towards the "action centric".

Nobody wants Call of Duty to change genres though, and that's practically what RE did. They went from survival horror to action. Action is just whats popular nowadays I guess, Splinter Cell has also abandoned its roots and turned into an action game.

Stealth and horror are almost dead. I want a revival of those two.

On Metacritic the PS3 version shows 14 positive reviews, 5 mixed and 1 negative. The Xbox 360 version has 21 positive reviews, 18 mixed and 4 negative. Even if you put all the mixed and negative reviews together from both versions there would still be more positive reviews.

Depends on what you view as postive. Metacritic thinks anything above 70 is good. Personally, I think anything below 80 is probably terrible. That's just how I was in school. Never anything below 80. Given that this is an RE game at that, I'm shocked that there are even mixed, let alone negative reviews. That speaks volumes.

I am disappointed. Capcom has shamelessly or ignorantly bastardized their long running franchise for the sake of mainstream appeal. I have been playing games for over 25 years and I can say I am not one to reminisce or revel in any perceived superiority of past gaming mechanics. RE is the progenitor and the longest standing franchise of the survival / horror genre and it needs to innovate and change to stay relevant. That includes controls, characters, venues...everything.

I am not going to level any criticism towards what appears to be RE6's divergence from the tenets of survival horror. RE 5 and 6 are more in the vein of action shooter and that is OK. Where I take issue is Capcom's insistence on shoving every current day gaming mechanic down our collective throats. It is as if they took ideas from every popular game in the last 2 years and crammed them on a disk. There is no longer anything unique or different about RE. I would not have been as disappointed if the implementation of the ideas was done well. As it stands it is a mess--from the cover system to the quick time events.

I am saddened that Capcom succumbed to what I believe is a development environment heavily influenced by games like Gears, Uncharted and COD. I love the grand spectacle and bombastic presentation these games offer and I believe RE6 does not lack in that regard. The big difference is that these games have perfected and refined their individual gameplay mechanics to make them industry benchmarks. RE6 had that potential but could not define its core. It tries to be a rainbow of sorts...encompassing every color and hue of current day gaming. The sad thing is that rainbows go away and everyone forgets them after a while.

Thank Gaia for demos. This was a day 1 purchase for me right up to the download....whew!

So many people bitching about a game sucking jeez. Yeah I get it as a die hard RE fan. This game is not great and its a huge step down from the likes of games such as Re 1,2,3,4.

Seriously though this game is getting treated like its Superman 64 for fuck sake. Its not amazing but its enjoyable. Go to a redbox and rent it for a day if your really sketchy about getting it or go to a friends house that has it to play. Then express your opinion all you want.

I do though have to agree Capcom needs to get their act together and really think about the way they are going. They are already in the shit, it cant be that damn hard to throw in that survival horror factor into Resident Evil once again.

Isn't all that bad? Firstly, it's a bad Resident Evil game and a bad survival horror game. Now that's out of the way I'll tell you that since Capcom have tried to emulate most recent popular action games to provide a mainstream game for a mainstream audience, you'd think they'd get that right. Surely if they're sacrificing the essence of what makes Resident Evil so great to get more sales, they'd make something as good or better than Uncharted, Gears, etc.

Nope... this is just a terrible action game with offensively excessive QTEs throughout, really uninspired level design, a convoluted story, mediocre me-too gameplay.. a really poor cover system, a broken and poorly responsive camera that obstructs gameplay, and an often stress inducing AI.

So the game has actual technical faults that most reviews are failing to report. The fact that it's such a blatant grab at the mainstream gamer is only a part of the problem.

There are moments... glimmers, of past greatness, but that's all they are. Glimmers.

There's absolutely no doubt that if this was a brand new game from Capcom without the Resident Evil brand name, barely anyone would be defending it like they are currently, and it would share the same light as Quantum Theory does now... that of a sincerely poor game. At least QT didn't ruin the reputation of a franchise.

It matters not that Capcom have put a lot of value into the game, because when you consider most of it is bad, well...

From what I have played, Resident Evil 6 is falls between a 6-7 for me. I can't help but feel that score lower than a 5 are a knee jerk reaction to the new direction, and anything above a 7 is just blind fanboyism.

It really is not a bad game, it's just not that great either.

Agreed. Though I just started, some additions I liked, but some of the stuff that wasn't a problem before sprung up. Camera, moving the character, etc.

It's not really mentioned in reviews and though it may come with practice, the inventory screen is terrible. Like you said, it's still not a 4.5 bad like Gamespot stated, but it's also not anything above a 7.

I can understand Capcom putting more action into RE; after all, the virus is spreading and zombies are now massive in numbers; they need to bring back the horror/survival elements, it is easy to competently do that and make it so there is more action due to how much more common the zombies are.

Well I can tell you this for sure. They have lost just about every RE fan. They my impress other people but most RE fans won't even touch this game. You can call them names and say they are trolling and get angry all you like.Capcom just lost most of the Resident Evil gamer population and will lose them forever if they keep making the games like this.It isn't even that good a game in the first place. The only way to punish Capcom is for people not to buy the game in droves. But I know that's not going to happen so Capcom will probably keep making future RE games like this. Why change when people are going to shower you with money?

The game's a solid 7.5. I still think it has an over reliance on quicktime events and scripted events. What I don't understand is how Capcom feels that this game is more accessible to a mass audience? It's a dumbed-down action game with poor cover mechanics. I really want to see a new-age survival-horror RE like in the old days. We haven't gotten a good console survival horror since Dead Space, and now that's gone the way of RE.

Take the RE6 engine and give me a single-player, no co-op, no multiple characters survival horror RE game. People will buy that!

I never understood why people treat reviews as gospel instead of thinking for themselves. RE1-0 were great...for their times. As technology advances, new forms of gameplay are ushered in. All the COD comparisons are idiotic. COD does not own action, it does not own explosions and they don't own gunplay. Chris is in the BSAA dealing with an issue on a global scale. Why wouldn't there be military presence? People constantly complain about COD but it makes BILLIONS and DON'T say "it's 15 year olds" There aren't one billion dollars worth of 15 year olds buying these games. Hell I play extensively and run into little kids like 1-2 times a week, tops. Leon's campaign definitely reminded me of a more traditional RE, but many of us were kids when RE was released. People are still attached to the way they felt playing those older games instead of realizing that if capcom made an EXACT replica of RE again it would be annoying. Slow, bad camera angles, terrible voice acting etc. I personally don't sit at my computer waiting for a review to roll in, and let it dictate whether or not a game is good and if I'll buy it. Can you imagine going back to Goldeneye on N64? How about Altered beast? Shinobi? We loved them as kids, but by god at $60 a pop and hundreds a dollars a console later, games better be deeper and more advanced. Hats off to Capcom. I swear gaming has definitely become nothing more than trolling, hate and going into a game with nothing but negative mindset from the go. Rather than just booting a game up and playing it. Is RE6 perfect? No, there are a few nuances, the QTE are annoying at some points and the quick turn is 100% broken this time around. But it's solid overall, and I am enjoying it.

I finished all 4 Campaigns yesterday and it took me 22 hours and 43 mins. The story outcome was amazing for me. Great game and worth the 60 bucks i spent on it. Then again every resident evil game is worth 60 bucks for me.

Truthfully the only thing that needed a reboot in Resident Evil was the controls other then that the games are damn near flawless.
Seriously all Capcom needed to do was go in the games options and offer a controller patch to allow the player to move and shoot at the same time.
That was literally the only thing keeping me from playing the Resident Evil games.

I got the Game for 2 Days, Played 5 Hours and still only halfway through with Leons Campaign.

Its a Shitload of Content for a Singleplayer Game nowadays, 3 Campaigns, 6 playable Characters, Mercenaries, Great Graphics and Sound.

yeah i mean i played thru all of leons and jakes and the one thing that gave me practically a migrain was the camera. So inconstant and gittery....that alone for me just ruined the momentum and flow you know? Capcom get hatred cos of underhanded tactics and what not, their mistreatment of much loved mega series being a huge reason for the hate. The thing is but, if it were any other company brought into view for indescrepancies, there wouldnt be so much heat. Stupid but true :P
