How Sony’s New PSN Pricing Hints At A Next Generation Model | TheSixthAxis

TSA: "Setting aside Sony’s hugely generous donation of the majority of Starhawk’s DLC to PlayStation Plus subscribers recently, the recent case of the publisher breaking the game into two chunks and selling them separately (or, indeed, together) hints at a pricing and content model that could point the way to what the platform holders are planning for next generation."

I am a plus member, and if it was not for that I would have missed out on certain games....Starhawk being one of them!

Starhawk is a game I probably would never have purchased otherwise, but now I have played it (Storymode) I cannot believe how awesome it looks and plays!!!

IMO it's like a hybrid of RDR and a mature (Nintendo IP) Starfox.

The PS+ model is very cool indeed!

* I would love to see the freebies extended to movies from the Video Store!

... I've been a Gold-member for years (since the original Xbox actually), but that subscription will NOT be renewed next year, but replaced with Sony's PSN-PLUS, which seems to offer much more value for money.

Gazondaily4376d ago

Whilst I won't be cancelling my Live subscription I do agree that PSN PLUS has great value for money. MS need to adopt a similar model in terms of what a Gold membership offers.

gnothe14376d ago

Yi long...you been a member since the original xbox an NOW you decide you won't be renewing because of PSN...yeah I believe that...I ve been on xbl since the original xbox..I'm at 9years on my account an there's no way I'll throw all that time away...an if you were a 9 year member you wouldn't cancel yours either..ESPECIALLY not for PSN+

Yi-Long4376d ago (Edited 4376d ago )

I had the Gold subscription on the original Xbox: It came for 30 euro including Splinter Cell Pandorra Tomorrow, and a cheap headphone I believe.

The only thing I use Xbox Live Gold for nowadays, is playing Battlefield 1943 online, and for the occasional interesting Deal of the Week. That's all. And TBH, that's not worth 40+ bucks anymore. Especially considering I can also play Battlefield 1943 on my PSN as well, which came free with BF3

Most new games I now purchase where I feel I might take the game online (FIFA, Battlefield 3, etc), I purchase for the PS3, so I can drop Xbox Live without a problem.

Im just glad that Starhawk is finally going on people's radar :D It was sad to see such a great game not get noticed when it released :C

urgentfury4376d ago

Agreed and the MLG 20K tournament lets individuals have a chance to get paid a good chunk of change

A-Glorious-Dawn4376d ago

I know!
Been saying this for ages, why has such a good game slid under the radar..

It's games like Starhawk that make me so glad I don't follow the media when it comes to my choice in games..

I'm not a plus member :( but I will be buying all the DLC for Starhawk, Lightbox is one of the few dev's that deserve the money.

sway_z4376d ago (Edited 4376d ago )

I don't think the article was a comparison or intended to ignite a LIVE Gold vs PSN+ debate .....both offer their own features to their respective subscribers.

@Septic

...and MS has recently announced a rewards scheme linked to achievements, so maybe MS are paying attention?

I don't know what to think of it. Starhawk is my favourite online game atm, it's one of the most fun, diverse and addictive games I have ever played online. Why Sony didn't advertise this game when it released is beyond me. This split game offer is nice, but they should have started advertising the game during the beta, which was very good and made me decide to buy this game day one. But during the beta I already noticed hardly any of my PSN friends (mostly from playing MAG) was playing it. They didn't know the game, the name, nothing.

As for DLC, it's absolutely great the new maps and gamemodes came in the form of free mandatory downloads, no split community, really wonderfull these days. Important, because it's not that big a community. Because they didn't advertise, because they didn't seem to care about sales. Then why charge 5 dollars for a Grizzly mechsuit EVERYBODY wants to have? It's in almost every loadout and it kicks ass, in Europe we got it one day later and playing without it felt wrong, unfair. Of course I bought it the next day, only 2.50 here, but I still think it's strange, trying to make a few extra bucks on your loyal fans instead of making millions through proper advertisement. It doesn't add up.

FunAndGun4375d ago

I think the main idea behind it was with Plus. Give Plus the SP and all the DLC for free, and then they would hopefully buy the Multiplayer portion.

Sorry, but pricing like this is not leaving any clues to a next gen model, just better pricing is all (if it keeps up that is).

Starhawk over Warhawk?...... Dude, NO ONE should listen to you.

Odd choices for "best" more like you settled as these being the "best" that available to you at the time, cause a lot of these blow or were average to poor performers that ended up in bargain bin.

Missing too many great sci-fi titles here. The Void, The Resistance Series, Killzone 2 and 3, Enslaved, man.. there were so many, this is redicu-list.

FreeckyCake161d ago

Nobody should listen to you either with that attitude.

OtterX161d ago

I agree that Starhawk shouldn't be above Warhawk, however I must say that Starhawk multiplayer was incredible for its time! Many people wrote it off bc the single player was quite terrible, bc it was basically 1 huge tutorial for the multiplayer. But I can tell you never spent any significant amount of time in MP. It was doing incredibly tense base building w air, foot and land vehicle (and mech!) combat long before Fortnite was ever a thing.

I bet it would have been much better received if it had just ditched the story mode all together. So many people like yourself completely wrote it off based on reviews by reviewers that let the criticism of single player weigh heavily on their scores. I bet you didn't even play it.

The riddick games are some of the best stealth titles ever, highly underrated

YourMommySpoils161d ago

What games? All recall plating was Escape from Butcher Bay.

Friendlygamer161d ago (Edited 161d ago )

There's also the less acclaimed 'assault on dark Athena'

( also, not saying this to you specifically but there's both resistance and killzone games on the list, it's amazing how even something so simple and innocent as a game list can be turned into misinformed vitriol here lol )

jznrpg161d ago

Glad to see Resonance of Fate. Enslaved was pretty good too. I’m sure there are others nobody has listed but I’m too tired to try and think of anything

Roundtable: Dead Game Franchises We Miss

With every big game now belonging to a big intellectual property, there are those that have become redundant. Here are the series' we miss.

RPGer1238d ago

I miss Dark Cloud I mean damn, Dark Cloud 2 is one of the best Action RPG game ever made. The game have: Rich Worlds, different setting, tons of contents, vareity in gameplay like never before (and even after), best buliding mechanics, crafting system like no one did and finally impressive graphics.

Most underrated game ever. It deserved the popularity and sales of Zelda and Final Fantasy. ut unfortunately, Level-5 and Sony didn't advertise it at all.

titans99991238d ago

My franchises I wish would make a come back, are Battlefront by pandemic studios - galactic conquest was the best, mercenaries 1 and 2, and prototype 1 and 2...great games!
