Difficulty in Gaming – Is it a Selling Point or Not?

theBitFix writes: Quick, I want you to name the hardest games released in recent memory. What comes to mind? If you’re like me the first titles that pop into your head would be games like Demon’s Souls, Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden and maybe even the recent downloadable title Spelunky. Now there’s one thing that I believe all these games have in common, difficulty as a selling point.

To be honest, I've seen one trend:

It depends on the amount of button pushing for the amount of time you have to do the pushing.

brish4654d ago

Q. Difficulty in Gaming – Is it a Selling Point or Not?
A. It depends on the gamer. Some gamers want difficulty, some do not.

knowyourstuff4654d ago

All you need to do is look at the sales figures of Demons Souls and Dark Souls.
If you can't see where I'm going with this - they both undersold, largely because of the bad game design that led them to being so difficult in the first place.
This, herein, is the difference between challenging and frustrating. God of War is challenging. Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry 3 are all just stupidly frustrating with horrible game design.

pixelsword4654d ago

I don't know if they undersold, but they said that Demon's Souls was the company's all-time best seller.

brish4654d ago

"... they both undersold, largely because of the bad game design that led them to being so difficult in the first place."

They were designed to be difficult. That's not a "bad game design" it's a major selling point for gamers that want challenging games. Like I said, some gamers want easy games and some want challenging games. Obviously, the souls games aren't for you.

I think Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls are two of the best games this generation.

Knowyourstuff -

What exactly was badly designed about Dark Souls?
I never encountered a fight or a situation where I died because the game messed up. It was only ever when I made a mistake that I died.

I.e Good game design.

i think it is because lets think about this what was the first thing people thought of when they thought of demon/dark souls, oh man this game is tough i i gotta pick this up, same thing can be said for ninja gaiden, and the original devil may crys.

IWentBrokeForGaming4654d ago

if it is a hardcore title, it should be played as such!

the harder a game is, the harder it is to instantly beat... thus adding longevity to it!

CrimsonessCross4654d ago

Sounds like Diablo 3 logic to me. Not the greatest solution in the world...try again, please.

Depends on what's causing the difficulty.
Some games are difficult because there is genuine difficulty which you can overcome with practice... other games are difficult because they have broken mechanics (like a camera that won't point in the right direction)

Personally, I like it when a game gives options. MGS and DeusEx are two that come to mind off the top of my head; you can play it easy, or make it harder by setting arbitrary limits like not using any weapons, or not killing anyone.

DMC2 ranked 2nd and also DmC ranked 3rd?
What a load of BS!

ABizzel168d ago

IMO

6. DMC2 6/10
5. DMC4 7.5/10 (Hated Nero, repeat bosses, Dante was the saving grace but only about half the game)
4. DmC 7.5/10 (solid overall, some great ideas, meh story, dialog sucked, and the director almost killed DMC)
3. DMC1 8.5/10 (all around solid)
2. DMC5 9/10 (carried by Dante & Nero gameplay, I didn’t like V’s, Nero’s better but still not a fan)
1. DCM3 10/10 (chef’s kiss)

Well, it worked.

This nothingburger of a opinion article got a lot of views and comments.

Pyrofire9567d ago

WHAT!? who in their right mind would put 2 near the top (not at the bottom) unironically?
I think all of them are worth playing in their own right honestly, except 2 unless you REALLY want to experience the whole series.

FinalFantasyFanatic67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

I honestly don't know what the author was smoking, personally I'd rank DMC3 as no.1, maybe DMC5 as second, DMC1 as third, DMC4 as fourth, and DMC as fifth and DMC2 last. such a bizarre list, mybe the author just has strange taste.

DMC2 anywhere but last is crazy. Awful list overall.

BlaqMagiq168d ago

"Devil May Cry 2 isn’t trash. It’s just misunderstood by a fanbase that doesn’t like change."

This and putting DMC 2 number 2 is all I need to ignore this ranking. DMC2 is absolute trash and it's clear this person doesn't understand exactly why.

Flenter68d ago

For me: 3,1,5,4,2 and then .....Dmc

fsfsxii68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Why is DmC last? Genuinely curious.

lellkay68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Dmc is far superior to DMC2 come on

"almost 20-year-old series"

It's 24 years old.

The lock on and intense and in depth one on one combat was always something I've been a fan of. Ocarina of time definitely deserves credit there as well which is also one of those games that may have inspired souls. Souls has done an amazing job at making many games better telling the world that difficult games are still great and loved.

Still have my PS3 copy sealed 🐸

thorstein217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

I still have my PS3 copy, but I played that game for over 100 hours.

italiangamer217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

My copy was a gift for a religious occurrence, back in 2011.
Never opened it because I already knew the Souls games are not for me but it's always nice to have it in the collection.

Prayingathiest216d ago

Demon souls and the remake will be forever etched in my mind so many playthroughs and a proper gaming experience
