Digital Foundry vs. Wii U

It's safe to say that last year's Wii U E3 debut left us with more questions than we had answers. It was clear that Nintendo has once again stepped back from the technological arms race that had cost its competitors billions in losses, and was focusing on controller-driven concept games that it felt had a greater chance of mainstream success. However, at the same time, the console was being released seven years after the debut of Xbox 360, so surely it had to reflect the generational leaps in technology we've seen since then............?

Includes Batman Arkham City screenshot comparison between console platforms:

PS3: http://images.eurogamer.net...

Wii U: http://images.eurogamer.net...
X360: http://images.eurogamer.net...
PS3: http://images.eurogamer.net...

It does seem Wii U has the edge here in these shots, especially the last set. Maybe it is not significantly faster, but it would have been crazy to launch a machine LESS capable than 360 and PS3, so i doubt that rumour is true after seeing these shots.

Moncole4489d ago

You can see the Wii U has better textures and lighting.

Computersaysno4489d ago (Edited 4489d ago )

Looks like better implementation of FXAA as well for Wii U, slightly smoother edges. Most noticeable in the arched window frame in the first set, and then the water towers on the left and bottom spikes of the centre building in the second set.

You can see that whole building on the Wii U version is much cleaner and more detailed. Of course Rocksteady have changed quite a bit there which would help, but it does look better.

Its closer in quality to the PC version than the other consoles.

DigitalAnalog4489d ago

But no doubt, 6 months is more than enough time to implement final polish, question is, will it run 60FPS?

Boody-Bandit4489d ago (Edited 4489d ago )

We wont know until the game launches how the WiiU multiplats compare to the PS3 and 360. These shots looks very similar in comparison and in the end that is all they are until we have the final product in hand.

Than we can truly compare frame rates, video tearing, stuttering, slow down, loading, texture loading, pop up, draw distance, etc. That is what is going to determine what the WiiU is capable of while comparing it directly to what will than be several years old technology.

All I am saying is there is a lot more to determine graphical fidelity than screenshots and early demo being compared to full retail versions.

I am on the fence about the WiiU. Their first year line up plus hardware pricing will have to be intriguing for me to want to go out and purchase a console that will be far surpassed in nearly every way with in a years time. Nintendo needs a couple of the true marquee titles and I don't think that's going to happen in the first year.

ProjectVulcan4489d ago (Edited 4489d ago )

Of course, Rocksteady have a little more time to sort the final version. We have known that Batman AC was gonna be on WiiU for a long time though, so it isn't as if this is a super early build....

PLUS if Wii U was significantly faster, we would surely know it by now. We would surely see it in a game like Arkham City. The shots favour the WiiU version, but they do not show a leap you would EXPECT from a machine that is a lot faster than PS3 or 360.

Be realistic now. You can improve games up until launch, but if there really was a massive gap we WOULD know about it seeing screens and videos. It would be obvious in stuff like ZombieU, Pikmin 3 and this. I can pretty much guarantee right now WiiU is not significantly faster than Ps3 and 360.

The more you look at all WiiU videos and shots, the more obvious and the more it adds up to plainly seeing WiiU is not a next gen powerhouse....

2EHO4489d ago

Seriously we are talking about a demo not even the retail version. Nintendo judt recently got their final dev kits in the hands of developers. So we are gonna have to wait for the 2 wave of games on the console(6-12 months after launch) before we start seeing the true power. That's just for those who wanna nit pick and actually believe this console is only on par with current gen... Which are a lot of gamers who believe that.

Grap4489d ago

you do realize that after 1 year we could see a next gen console. keep in mind what holds PC from next gen game is the current consoles.

Computersaysno4489d ago

It is true. Time to really exploit the system is time Nintendo don't really have if we are expecting brand new machines considerably more powerful in less than 18 months.

Nintendo will unveil their best looking brand new Zelda or Mario title at E3 next year exploiting more power from Wii U.......Just as Microsoft and Sony demo ridiculous looking next gen games on vastly more powerful hardware.

Doh!

ShaunCameron4489d ago

<Just as Microsoft and Sony demo ridiculous looking next gen games on vastly more powerful hardware.>

Yeah. And lose them even more money than the 360 and PS3 did before 2009-2010. Given Sony's current situation, I don't know if they're even in any position to do that.

Computersaysno4489d ago (Edited 4489d ago )

So ShaunCameron you think Sony and Microsoft will go for weak next gen machines then, that aren't next gen? Neither of them will build a fairly powerful machine despite seeing what UE4 can do?

Don't be crazy. Of course at least one of them will build a machine faster than 360 and PS3 and no doubt Wii U, quite a lot faster i bet.

Look at Vita for more evidence, did Sony change their plan? Build a cheap low tech machine?

No, they went mad yet again. Wake up- they are far more likely to build a powerful next gen machine!

2EHO4489d ago

You guys are expecting way more than what's going to be coming. Next gen is going to be a lot closer than you think. But you will have to wait and see. It won't matter for graphics whores they will point out a jaggie on a blade of grass as proof a system is underpowered.

Ye, Custom Robo Arena was a lot better than Pokemon anyways, now that's a game.

Eonjay5d ago

Interestingly this comes like a day after they announced they would be at the Tokyo Games Show.

Vits5d ago

We should all really hope so. Otherwise, this could lead to many issues, as they hold patents on numerous game mechanics. And when I say numerous, I truly mean it. Take this one, for example:

"Abstract: In an example of a game program, a ground boarding target object or an air boarding target object is selected by a selection operation, and a player character is caused to board the selected boarding target object. If the player character aboard the air boarding target object moves toward the ground, the player character is automatically changed to the state where the player character is aboard the ground boarding target object, and brought into the state where the player character can move on the ground."

In plain English, do you guys remember that super amazing mechanic where you surf on the water with a Pokémon, and then when you hit land, it changes to you walking? Yeah, they patented that.

porkChop6d ago

A patent lawsuit? What Pokémon-related patent could Palworld even be infringing that other similar games haven't? This makes no sense. Feels like Nintendo just trying to throw its weight around to bully competitors, just like they do with emulators even though they're legal.

Kaii6d ago

They can't Innovate their own IP, but when others are breaking the ceiling, they run to the courts, gtfo Nintendo/Gamefreak.

Companies' gatekeeping mechanics behind the patent system to stifle innovation, consumers will always pick the better product, it's not the consumer's fault that Gamefreak has sat on their lazy assess for years.

Kornholic5d ago

"Consumers will always pick the better product"

Since when?

swedishMeatwad5d ago

You can't argue with _subjective_ taste. Some people are going to like games you find crappy. I'm happy not everyone has the same taste.

Kornholic4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@swedishMeatwad

PS5 Pro is obviously objectively the better product when compared to the base PS5, but the majority of consumers interested in a PS5 will not be picking Pro over base PS5.

There are countless examples like this out there.

The_Blue5d ago

Rather you like it or not COD has many accessible options and customization that allows for better experience than most other FPS.

Knightofelemia6d ago

The Palworld has been out since January of 2024 and now Nintendo finally decides to do something. I fail to see how Palworld is like Pokemon besides evolving monsters. There are other games out there as well where you can capture and level up monsters. Tales of Symphonia 2 does that capture monsters and have them fight with you and they evolve when levelling up. The two games might share some similarities but what game doesn't borrow from another game. I could understand if Palworld was just a straight on copy clone of Pokemon but it's not. Nintendo is starting to become a pain in the ass. Going full gung ho with rom sites that I can see, purposely taking down pictures from a strategy guide for Mario 64 the strategy guide never came to North America and Nintendo had the pictures taken down. Where does it every stop with Nintendo?

babadivad5d ago

Monsters don't evolve in Palworld

Software_Lover5d ago

It's because Palworld became a worldwide viral success. Nintendo can't fathom someone else being that popular when it comes to a small monster catching game.

VersusDMC5d ago

Nintendo is only acting now because they just finished a lawsuit which they won.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Atlus should get on this and sue Nintendo as SMT came out before Pokemon. If Nintendo is going to play this game.

isarai5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

This feels like a scare tactic more than anything else. There's nothing here dozens of other games haven't already done, they're just mad this game showed people how much the pokemon series has been slackin and are desperately trying to make an example out of them.

How's about instead of spending all that money on court fees and lawyers you invest it into making pokémon better?

Profchaos5d ago

I think if it was a scare tactic it would have happened when the game came out I have a feeling they've been building a case for a while

isarai5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

It did happen even before the game came out, they tried several tomes before and nothing came of it

Profchaos5d ago

I was pretty sure the only statement they made was they would investigate

If Square Enix & Nintendo are his hometown what does that make Xbox?

OtterX16d ago

The red light district, where games go to w**** themselves for Gamepass cash.

Asterphoenix17d ago

Well Nintendo and Squaresoft is where he started. I totally understand why he doesn't want to do FF now. If so I'm happy for either a remaster of Last Story or a new entry/spiritual successor. Loved the battle system of Last Story.

porkChop17d ago

I just really want a new Lost Odyssey, or even a proper remaster with some QoL updates. Though I'd also love to see him work with Square on a new IP.

Profchaos17d ago

That's about as good as a confirmation that we will see ports to the switch2

Knightofelemia17d ago

Wish my parents bought me a NES as a kid I would have played the first FF game. But I was lucky to have a SNES I played a bit of FF6 and just went to Chrono Trigger. When the FF collection releases I-VI Collection Anniversary drops I will take my time to play each Final Fantasy.

Deathdeliverer16d ago

I mean… this is kinda obvious. The original final fantasy and its early sequels were on…
