GNT: Why are console user numbers declining?

For several years now, many within the gaming community have speculated and fuelled rumours of the next console generation and when this next generation can be expected. Some say that this year’s E3 will reveal to the world the new Xbox 720 and an insight into Microsoft’s future in console gaming. Many have seemed to forget that Nintendo’s next generation console, the Wii-U, will be released this year. Many experts in the industry have said that this current console generation could be the last generation which will see consoles on top of the gaming food chain.

if you add up last gen console sales and then add up this gen console sales, you'll find that they have increased in sales.

PopRocks3592330d ago

Isn't that largely because more software on consoles were released this year on more platforms?

DragoonsScaleLegends2330d ago

What does software sales have to do with how many consoles were sold? The amount of consoles sold has increased over how many were sold during the last generation of game consoles.

Rearden2330d ago

Doh, because of mobile gaming: tablets, iPhones, app stores.

decline?? im sure more people are buying consoles now a days than last generation. almost everyone has a 360 or ps3 and has a little sister who has a wii catching dust

WitWolfy2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

I agree I inspired more or less everyone in my family (guy wise) to buy a 360.. Or a PS3 respectively.. Im like a sales rep for these companies, too bad I dont get compensation for my word of mouth lol

Console numbers are slowing down and PC numbers are speeding up. Im no rocket scientist, but seeing how this generation is finally past its prime i would say some people are reaching for greener pastures.

Hicken2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

Correlation does not imply causation. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, so you're in luck.

Unfortunately, the last few years of gaming would say that this generation of consoles is just reaching its prime. Well, unfortunate for your not-so-sly jab at console gaming.

Edit: And, as others have stated, while the numbers may be down from last year, this generation has seen a lot more systems sold than previous generations.

I might not bother buying anymore consoles after this generation myself. I will keep my PS3 and my 360, but I will probably buy all my next generation games on my PC through Steam. Theres a possibility that I might buy a PS Vita down the road, but other than the exclusive Playstation games, I can't see the benefit of buying a next generation console at this point in time. Who knows, maybe I'll be a late adopter next gen after the prices go down.

Right you are, I have 2 PS3's and I find that I barely use them for gaming anymore. I only ever use them for streaming movies/tv shows/videos from my linux media server.

However, I've gotten back into pc gaming bigtime, I built a highend pc May 2011 for BF3 & haven't looked back.

Games are so much more challenging on pc and the crappy accessibility games that are released on the pc usually get fixed by the modders with hardcore versions & AI fixes.

I could never be a strictly pc gamer. Too many buggy and glitchy experiences for my taste.

SignifiedSix2330d ago

Also, hacking noobs in 75% of the servers. The reason why I stopped playing strictly on the PC.

CyberCam2330d ago

That's probably because the games were console ports!

Zha1tan2330d ago

75% of servers had hackers? lol i can picture you being the guy who calls out people for cheating when they have a good score on BF3.
