User Review : Medal of Honor: Frontline

Ups
  • If you can't play the PS2 version it is nice to go back
Downs
  • Little to no change from the PS2 game
  • Buggy
  • No offline multiplayer

Does this re-masted edition deserve your time and money

Story: Nothing has changed from the original. You are Lt Jimmy Patterson. He starts by storming Omaha beach Saving Private Ryan style. You are then sent by the OSS (office of strategic services) to distribute German U-boat which then leads on to finding out about a secret jet fighter. The missions are fun with nothing changing from the original PS2 game (which is a good thing). The story is no masterpiece but you can't really change that for a HD remastering.

Graphics: For a HD remake it is not bad but not great. On the first level I did notice the water effects had improved but apart from this little has changed from the original which is a major disappointment. The textures look flat and the character models look bad. The bullets still look like splinters of wood flying at you. I would love to write more on this but there is actually little to write about it. Visually it is basically the same as the PS2 game which came out in 2002. Visually it is the worst HD re-mastering I have seen. It is hard to distinguish between the PS2 and PS3 version. (A side note the screen has to be stretched on my 26 inch HD TV to fill the screen)

Gameplay: You might think ok they haven't improved the graphics what about the gameplay. Well sadly no. There is a new control scheme which has a similar layout to modern FPS. A long with this there is the old layout which is fun to try to see how much gaming has evolved. I found reloading in the game a pain. In the first mission the game sometimes decided not to reload and other times it would. However it is worth noting it did become easier to reload as the game progressed but there were some problems. The aiming mechanics haven't changed. The sensitivity is way to high and there is no way to change it. It becomes impossible to accurately fire the sub machine guns so I spent a good majority of the game firing with a pistol ( a quick note the sniper rifle, while aiming down the sights, is much easier to control but not practical to run around with). I even stopped look down the sight all together as it become impossible to aim. The enemy are still as dumb as ever. Standing up shooting at you but some do take cover. The sound hasn't change from the original either but it still holds its own. The guns do make unrealistic pew pew noises but the explosions and character voices are remarkably good for an old game. The trophy support is a nice add on and it is nice to see the cheats back

Multiplayer: Well I could't find it. There seems to be no offline multiplayer which is a shame. Had fun playing that and I hoped it would have been included

Conclusion: Well If you can't play/do not have access to the original game and want another go at Frontline then you will like this game. If you are looking for a re-masted edition the do not buy. Nothing has changed from this game and the same old bugs are still present. It is still fun to play mowing down Nazi's but just do not expect a upgraded version. If you pick up and play the original PS2 copy you could save yourself some money because to call this "a re-masted edition" is a joke.

Frontline never had multiplayer, just a quick note. Also I feel you were a little harsh on the game. I mean what did you expect from a HD remaster? Maybe it's because you're criticising one of my all time favourite games :p

Medal Of Honor is what defined FPS Games and made WW2 Games very popular, sadly it has not aged well.

Maybe in your perspective not mine.

In my opinion this game deserves at least a 8/10 - 9/10 tops. Before MOHFL i only played modern day shooters nothing else. The first time i started up FL i thought it was crap. Simply because of the graphics and controls, but i realized its an older game and it was made that way. So i gave it a try and i ended up really liking the game, if not more than MOH 2010. It's a really good game and has basic elements of a fun/great FPS.
- Again, just my opinion and only that. I like this game a lot.

It's hard not to notice similarities.

nveenio2921d ago

Similarities? It's almost shot-for-shot identical. I will say that games have come a long, long way.
