You know why Famitsu gave it 9's and 10's out of 10? Because it is a great game. In fact, it is the best JRPG I have played since FFVII. If you dont like turn-based games, then this is the game most likely to make you like it! There is not a better-looking JRPG around, especially a turn based one! If you compare it to the gameplay graphics of FFXIII (only a few seconds of the demos are of ACTUAL game play), then you will see the textures are no where NEAR the gameplay textures of Lost Oddyssey! This is turn-based, story-driven heaven!
It is NOT an action game, HURRAY! It is not a new type of RPG, HURRAY! This game is worth buying the system for. I can only hope FFXIII is as good and if so, it will cause me to buy a PS3.
The story... where do I start? The short stories or revealed memories are AWESOME! Unless you are trying to speed past them so that you can finish reviewing the game, they will move you! You will have an attachment to the hero like never before! And yes you have never seen such story telling and timing before. These stories are meant to make you use mental images, and your own imagination, as if you where reading a book. Yes I have a soft side. And yes I had emotions during FFVII. But it happened MANY times during this game! Many! You get a lot out of talking to people (they fill in the extra local stories constantly!).
The game play... don't get me started!!! First of all it is a turn-based RPG posing as a... TURN-based RPG!!! Thank Goodness! The menu navigation is great. No more getting lost on a world map (about time!). You can put the game down, go out of town, come back next weekend and pick it up! The physically weak players behind the immortals is extra thinking added to the pie!
The graphics? What turn-based RPG do you know that looks as good as LO? Answer can only be none, because it looks beter than Blue Dragon! I doubt that Final Fantasy's gameplay will look as good from what I have seen so far. Now don't get me wrong, it will look better, but only the movie part! The few seconds of ACTUAL game play look way inferior to LO's graphics, simply because the textures on the characters are not as good. Graphics alone do not make a game but they sure do help! Come on admit it people, if it was not for better graphics and online abilities, there would be NO reason to go to the next-gen.
It’s quite hard to believe, but Lost Odyssey turns fifteen years old today. A curious product of the time, it has arguably only got better with age - and not just because of what it is, but also what it represents.
The short stories that Kaim collects/remembers are truly emotional. I remember one in particular made my eyes water.
If you've never played this, try to hunt down an original copy, or emulate it. This game was a gem.
I wish there was a remaster. This and Last Story. Sad these games were released on the...wrong platforms...
These JRPGs stand up on their own.
VGChartz's Taneli Palola: "Some of my favourite pieces of video game music have historically been the overworld and hub world themes, as they often capture a wonderful sense of adventure and awe that makes me want to explore the world presented to me. The following nine themes are just a small handful of the best examples video games have given us over the years."
ROFL a 9.8 is way too high for this trash and LO has crappy graphics. Unreal Engine garbage at it's finest. Not even the CGI in LO will look as good as the gameplay in FFXIII / Versus. You can keep dreaming though while Mistwalker keeps failing and Square-Enix continues to release AAA games that sell over 6 million copies.
Lost Odyssey is still stuck in the 70's on metacritic. http://www.metacritic.com/g...
Final Fantasy games not only sell millions in short periods of time, but they dominate reviews and constantly win GOTY awards.
FFXII = 92% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
FFX = 92% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
FFIX = 94% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
FFVIII = 90% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
FFVII = 92% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
I gave it a 7.1 in my review, I couldn't get passed the fundamental flaws in the battle system and the story was pretty uninspiring.
may I ask why you spent nearly a whole paragraph comparing LO's visuals to FFXIII?...saying that 'from what you have seen' there is no way FFXIII will top LO's gameplay visuals?...FFXIII has not been released, and we have only seen a few low quality scans of the actual gameplay...of which were not confirmed to be real...
about when you were comparing ff13 and LO the cg and gameplay in ff13 are supposed to look near identicle because of the engine being used for it
I must say LO can be given 8.5 and 9.0 if you like it. But 9.8 yeah could be there are some fans of all games so thats no bad. But it is much to compare it with FFXIII, I dont say Mistwalker is inferior but FFXIII is Square biggest project and its production cost is definitely 3-4 times more than LO.
Also Mist Walker had big time troubles in making the game they not aonly suffered Money problems but also Unreal Engine cam ewith its own headache to Japenese Devs who needed to upgrade it constantly and read a lot of Enlish Script daily, but all of the staff of Mistwalker are Veteran from Square and Shadow Hearts. Lo was definitely victim of the troubles so may be the aequel could do great job with all UE3 upgrade and better Finance. Although it will take it say abt 3-4 sequels to get near FFXIII to get such budget and staff so large.
Also I am not seeing much greatness with FFXIII graphics, since the CGI's are great but Crystal tools are not so good I would say since FFXII looked way too less than MGS3, RE4, Shadow of Colossus also games like GTA:SA and even the old FFX looked better than FFXII I mean it looked really bad at many places. So I highly doubt abt Grpahics prowess of Square Enix. Think how did they made FFXI on 360 it was not very good in graphics heck it was very mediocre.
