Does High Voltage Software deliver a shock with The Conduit or have they blew a fuse?

This is my first review of any game and I have just completed this game 100%. I have every unlockable and every achievement in the game. I would like to make this an average thing to do when I finish game as I enjoy letting people know how games are from an avid gamer to better help them make the choice of purchasing or not. I hope you all like my review of…

The Conduit
Developed By, High Voltage Software
Published By, SEGA
Reviewed By, Brasi

Graphics:

The Conduit has the best graphics of anything we have seen so far on the Wii. The different textures are mapping is wonderful as well as the character designs and weapon designs. Each weapon and character has a distinctive look to them and are well polished almost to the extent of what one would expect on a High Definition console. The linear movement is nice to a certain extent to were you are not wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out were to go. The biggest problems with The Conduit in the presentation section is that certain pathways get repetitive and there is not much detail in the environments as well some questionable art style.

Sound:

While the music in The Conduit is nothing Platinum record worthy the intensity of the game is well brought out with the music. When missions or objectives are completed the music tones down from an up beat tempo down to a state of calming. The voice over in the game is very good with everything smoothly transitioning from sentence to sentence, as well as good acting of emotion. The voices of your human enemies are quite well as you hear the shouting of orders and conformation of locating the target, however there alien counterparts seem to lack any intellect. The only noises they make are the grunts and groans that you would expect an alien to sound like with the occasional mumble of some kind of alien language.

Gameplay:

This control is what The Conduit excels in. The default controls of The Conduit work well as the camera moves at a steady pace across screen and turning is a breeze, but if you dislike the defaults then there is plenty of tinkering to do in the options. It may take you awhile before you get the perfect controls down for your preferences but with the ability to change your sensitivity, dead zone, turn speed, and mapping on the fly helps greatly in trying to find your niche. The enemy AI is pretty good but certain moments you will have them run right into a grenade or just sit back in the open. This can be changed too. The Conduit offers the ability to change to difficulty setting on the fly just as the controls, feel like you are going through a level without a challenge? Just pause the game and adjust accordingly. The higher difficulty settings dramatically increase the AI as well as the damage you take from them. The AI will then make more moves with its allies as well as take opportune moments when you are reloading you weapon.

Story:

The story of The Conduit is actually deeper than most would expect in a first person shooter. It is by no means enough to win an Oscar though. There are plenty of twist and turns in the story as well as some conveniently located radio transmissions that make the story even better if you just spend the time sit around and listen, which you may feel like doing after an intense firefight. The story’s base however is quite simple, aliens are taking control of Washington D.C. and you have to stop them. It may seem generic but there is a lot more than what meets the eye . The only downside is that the story is a bit short only adding up about 8 hours of gameplay. While the story itself is short there are many different achievements and unlockables for those who enjoy them.

Lasting Appeal:

With The Conduit a lot of the appeal of the game does not come from the story, but from the fantastic online mode. Many different maps and game modes are sure to keep the avid online gamer at happy. Certain modes are unique to the online world such as the Bounty Hunter mode as each player is given a specific target to eliminate and points are awarded for successfully taking out the target and points are docked when you kill the wrong person. Another great mode is the ASE Football mode which is boils down to whomever holds the ASE the longest is the victor. The online runs smoothly however long waits for the server are a setback and the occasional loading into a game and not being able to move or see is quiet the annoyance.

Fun Factor

The game overall is a very fun experience and if you own a Wii this game is definitely worth picking up full time. This game delivers a feel that cannot be found on any First Person Shooter on the market, HD or Wii.

Conduit follow-up teased, ‘expect details before year’s end’

The Conduit developer High Voltage Software has teased a follow-up to its 2011 Wii shooter, hinting that something may be revealed before the year is out.

browngamer414246d ago

As much as I bought into the Conduit hype back in the day I really hope this game is not for a Nintendo platform-I was burned by promises of great graphics, controls and story-what I got was unfinished assets, disappearing floors and one of the stupidest stories of all time...

Conduit 2 and the problems of motion-controller shooters (Bitmob)

Conduit 2 is not the game that finally makes the first-person shooter feel at home on the Wii. Is this goal an impossible dream, or are developers just going about it incorrectly?

Tolkoto4726d ago

I remember how much initial excitement there was for shooters on the Wii. Never really panned out.

HolyOrangeCows4726d ago (Edited 4725d ago )

It really sucks....the perfect outlet for shooters, one of the most popular genres this gen, and it doesn't hardly have a handful of good shooters (Conduit is NOT a part of that handful).

I was glad to see Sony release the Move, because I knew it would fill the void where I thought the Wii would be. But it would be nice to see more support for it....all I use it for is Kz3.

@gypsygib
I felt like the little movements were 100x better than with an analog stick, but I think big movements/turns can be a bit tricky.
Anyway, I pretty much agree; Move makes me not want to go back to sticks for FPS games....not that I mind playing shooters the old fashion way now. In fact, I was playing Metal Arms: Glitch in the System today (PS2/Xbox/Gcube - HIGHLY recommended!).

@Below
I hate the FPS Metroid games, and the COD Wii-ports suck.

Valk4725d ago

So Conduit, Prime, COD, all the other games that work perfectly are complete crap but 1 FPS on PS3 proves the Move is filling the void?

Do you even listen to what you are saying?

ChickeyCantor4725d ago (Edited 4725d ago )

"I hate the FPS Metroid games"

Thought the same untill i actually finished the first one.
I can safely say : ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!

Shok4726d ago

No, it's just that most people were not willing to to adjust to the new control scheme.

Seriously, the Move and Wiimote are superior to dual-analogue. IR pointing is much more precise. Play Conduit 2 or Goldeneye 007 with the Classic Controller and watch yourself get decimated by the Wiimote users.

And there's really not even any big "motion-control" in these shooters. In Conduit for instance, you jab the Wiimote to melee, but that's pretty much it, and you can even map that action to an actual button.

gypsygib4726d ago

Play Killzone 3 using Move, although it has a very high learning curve, once learned you'll never want to play a FPS game on analogs again.

The accuracy, turn speed and movement are so much faster and better but it takes around 2 hours to master and tweak your settings.

Motion controlled shooters are the best way to play FPS games on consoles, at least as far as Move is concerned.

Knushwood Butt4725d ago

Yep. Can't see me rushing to buy a pad based shooter after KZ3 and Socom 4 with Move.

gypsygib4724d ago

I think the only reason I plan on getting Resistance 3 is due to Move controls. I've never played Resistance 1 and 2.

Knushwood Butt4724d ago

I loved the first game and enjoyed the second.

I'm slightly concerned that Insomniac only decided to implement Move at a later stage of development, but I'm sure they'll do a good job of it.

tunaks14726d ago

Prime 3, MOH:H2, Red Steel 2, Conduit 1, COD Reflex, and COD BO all control accurately on Wii.

Saying Move some how solves everything is naive, Move's supremacy over the Wiimote accuracy does not extend to the Wiimote's IR.

IR is 1:1, Good controls depend on the programming, the dead boxes, turning speeds, and how well it utilizes the pointer mechanic, hell including customizable controls fixes most problems.

Shok4726d ago

I don't get it. How can you complain about controls in a game where the controls are fully customizable? Like tunaks1 said above, you can adjust the deadzone, turning speed, cursor sensitivity, x-axis, y-axis, everything.

You can even map whatever action to whatever button.

Wii Motion Plus just makes it all better.

AND you can use the Classic Controller if you want to. This goes for Goldeneye 007 too.

Knushwood Butt4725d ago

It's not often I find myself agreeing with, shall we say, someone that likes Nintendo a lot, but I think the problem here is mainly that the article is written by an idiot.

'With a wand, you need to make a conscious effort to keep your cursor centered, which over anything other than the shortest of periods is tiring.'.

I can't say I have every played an FPS with the Wiimote, but for Move, this comment is totally redundant as the best way to play is by resting your 'wand' hand on your lap. As such, there really is no conscious effort to keep your cursor centered, unless you are incapable of resting your hand on your lap. Furthermore, doing so is not in the least bit tiring.

I would have thought the same principle applies to Wii shooters.

Shok4725d ago

Exactly. Only idiots play Move/Wiimote shooters with their arms up. You're supossed to rest them in your lap and hold your wrist up slightly.

GUYwhoPLAYSvideoGAME4726d ago

i think that killzone 3 has done motion controlled shooting better than most, if not the best.

Knushwood Butt4725d ago

I'd argue that Socom 4 does it better.

It took me a long time to tweak the KZ3 Move settings before I was happy with them, while with Socom 4 I play it with the default Move settings and have never needed to tweak them.
