What Difficulty Should I Start On in Diablo IV?
When you first start playing Diablo 4, there will only be two difficulties: Adventurer (World Tier I) and Veteran (World Tier II).
Adventurer will be the preferred difficulty for players who have never played a Diablo game before, or aren’t familiar with ARPGs. The enemy difficulty will be low, with enemies and bosses sporting lower health and damage.
The loot, XP, and gold will be worse than the Veteran difficulty, but this will be the perfect difficulty for new players to try out the classes and get their feet wet in the world of Diablo.
Veteran will be the difficulty preferred by long-time Diablo players or those with extensive experience with ARPG’s. Enemies will be more difficult, with certain enemy types and bosses providing a solid challenge. Players will get 20% more XP, higher tier loot, and more gold than those that play on Adventurer difficulty.
This will be the starting point for the majority of the fans of the franchise.

What Other Difficulties Are There in Diablo IV?
As mentioned, when players first start playing Diablo 4, there are only two difficulties to choose from. Players who complete dungeons on certain difficulties will unlock three higher-tier difficulties. They are as follows:
- Nightmare (World Tier III)
- Hell (World Tier IV)
- Torment (World Tier V)
When Should I Play the Higher Difficulties in Diablo IV?
As each new difficulty has a dungeon and difficulty requirement to unlock, these dungeons can be seen as the trial for each player hoping to move up to the next tier. Each dungeon also has a suggested level to tackle, so players will have some idea of when they might be ready for each challenge. The dungeons and recommended levels to tackle them are as follows:
- Nightmare (World Tier III): Unlocked by completing the Cathedral of Light dungeon on Veteran (World Tier II) Difficulty. Recommended level is 50.
- Hell (World Tier IV): Unlocked by completing the Fallen Temple dungeon on Nightmare (World Tier III) Difficulty. Recommended level is 60.
- Torment (World Tier V): Unlocked by completing the Archives of Issalia dungeon on Hell (World Tier IV) Difficulty. Recommended level is 70.
With these recommended levels, players should be aware of when they might be nearing their next level of challenge. The exact level will not be the same for everyone, as players with better gear or more experience can clear these dungeons before their recommended level. However, these still provide a solid baseline for players to compare themselves.
