Players Hopeful With the Prospect of a Pity System Coming to The First Descendant

The First Descendant Nell talking over the comms

We all know that TFD is all about the grind. You complete missions in hopes that the item you are gunning for will drop. Unfortunately, the drop rates in the game have a life of their own, and players everywhere report not being able to get an item they want, even though they’ve done dozens of runs and the item in question has a good drop rate (the infamous 20% is the biggest culprit here). The players voiced time and time again how they are not happy with how the drop rates work. Back in July, Nexon released and quickly removed a statement promising guaranteed drops, and naturally, the players were not too happy about it. And now, three months later, Nexon released the 1.1.6 Update, after which they mentioned that a sort of a pity system is coming to The First Descendant.

“Target Reward” – a Pity System Allegedly on the Way for The First Descendant

After the official Patch Notes for Update 1.1.6, Nexon posted a “Community Q&A”, where they gave answers to a lot of fan questions. They covered a lot of subjects and, when asked about the drop rates and if anything is planned for them, the devs had this to say:

“To address drop rate concerns in Season 2, we’re introducing the ‘Target Reward’ system. While certain items have a 20% drop rate, some players might obtain the item on their first try, while others may not get it even after ten attempts. Our analysis of server-wide logs shows that the overall drop rates align with the intended 20%, but individual player experiences often do not converge to this 20%, leading to variability. The ‘Target Reward’ system aims to address this by allowing players to select a mission and earn guaranteed rewards after a set number of attempts. Additionally, we plan to offer Enhanced Shape Stabilizers as limited-time event rewards, which increase the chances of obtaining rare items when opening Amorphous Materials. We are committed to providing a balanced farming experience that feels fair to all players.”

If we understood correctly, the Target Reward will work very similarly to the co-called pity system. The system, quite popular in gacha games, ensures a guaranteed drop of the wanted item after a certain number of failed attempts. Players reported that they had to repeat the same mission a hundred times before getting the desired item, so all would most definitely welcome a system like this.

Unsurprisingly, the fans only had words of praise for this announcement. “Pity system \o/” said Aerhyce as a comment to Nexon’s answer, and “Super excited about a target reward system. Hopefully no more running an outpost for an hour to get 10 amps just to get 1 of the rewards I need at a 32% chance.” said Girthbrooks20. A change like this could only benefit the game and reduce player frustration. This is just one of the many improvements promised for Season 2. If they all prove true, Season 2 will bring some massive improvements to the game. Fingers crossed.
