“Great For Revives, I Guess…” Players Discuss the Usability of Ajax in the Current State of The First Descendant

The First Descendant Ajax kneeling on the floor

When you start playing TFD, you get to choose between Viessa, Lepic, and Ajax as your first character. A lot of people went with Ajax, mostly due to his incredibly cool design, or the fact that he’s a tank. Pretty soon you unlock Bunny, and with a bit of luck, unlock Freyna as well. Those two are arguably the strongest Descendants in the game. Lepic and Viessa are also powerful damage dealers, with Lepic even being one of the best choices for defeating Colossi at one point. Sadly Ajax, as a character specializing in dropping barriers to protect his team, is a bit left out at the moment, as the game revolves around either running around, obliterating masses of enemies as fast as possible, or nuking bosses. On that note, The First Descendant players gathered together to discuss the usability of Ajax in the current state of the game.

Is There a Place For Ajax in the Current State of The First Descendant?

The current state of the game is such that it rewards “speedrunning” through missions and nuking bosses in 10 seconds. It’s all about finding the most efficient ways to farm materials and Amorphous Materials that you want. So, is there a place for a slower character that protects his team? It depends on what you want, but in general, not really.

We all love Ajax (he’s still our main), but with the hectic nature of TFD, there is not much use for static barriers. As it stands, he’s a bit of an all-rounder, with some cool AoE abilities and high defensive stats. Unfortunately, the game is (at least currently) geared toward specialization and high damage output.

Many suggest that having some kind of a “Taunt” ability would make Ajax more viable, and feel more like a tank, protecting his team. “The pace of the game renders him largely useless. Which is probably too harsh a word. I am sure the more end game content might have a better niche for him. But the early end game content you’re better off deleting everything with Freyna or Bunny or one of the other DPS monsters rather than hunkering down and failing to aggro stuff that a normal tank would do.“ JerbearCuddles pointed out.

Some even say that he’s a “relic of the past”, and that he gets less and less effective to more you progress the game beyond the main storyline.

Ajax Is Great For Helping Newer Players

As previously mentioned, Ajax can be one of the toughest characters in the game. That means he’s very forgiving to play with, and he’s great to fill in gaps in your team. Veteran Ajax players are a godsend to the less experienced ones. That Bunny is constantly dropping? Ajax can safely revive her while being directly under fire. Hailey wants to line up that perfect shot? Here’s a barrier to protect you, ma’am.

Alas, all of this falls apart very quickly as you progress in the game. Barriers and Shields can be destroyed in seconds by the end game Colossi, severely limiting Ajax’s usefulness. The only exception here is the Death Stalker, as Ajax can pack a serious Shield build. But still, he only relies on his weapons for damage.

In conclusion, without sugarcoating it, Ajax’s usefulness is very limited in end-game content. Sure, you might see a crazy-effective Ajax from time to time, but that’s due to the player’s experience, and not the character itself. Others can perform better with less effort. Ajax is geared towards slow and careful team play, but as it stands, The First Descendant is anything but that. Hopefully, our favorite tank will see some buffs in the future, making him more viable in the game.
