No one likes facing the disconnect or a log-off screen in the middle of a match. Be that Eternal War or Operations, Space Marine 2 players had to deal with this issue yesterday. A number of them had been booted from the game in the middle of a match, spurring outcry from all sides.

A wave of disconnections ruins SM2 games

One player had a streak of bad matches in Eternal War. And just as they were about to win one – bam – they’re off. The game disconnected and they were robbed of a win. “Eternal War has me ready to pull my hair out – I go 20 games getting stomped with a team that doesn’t know what they’re doing, then the one game my team is winning I disconnect from SM servers. I’m going crazy.” the player explained.

Others were quick to chime in with matchmaking issues in Eternal War matches, but that doesn’t explain the larger problem. Yet this player wasn’t the only one. FugginJunior has a similar issue: “Are they doing server maintenance, I can’t get into a PVP match?” The problem wasn’t tied to PVP alone though. Ste3lf1sh was running an Operation when it happened. Here’s what they had to say: “It just sucks ass when you got a random boss down, got the Gene Seed, the armory data and you just have to complete the final encounter and you got a f***g disconnect and get nothing… why can this game not just make me leader, give me bots and let me finish my freakin mission?! I really love this game, but this really sucks.” It’s frustrating, but there’s a simple and mundane explanation.

The answer is boring, but expected

Unfortunately, the cause of the issue is just as many suspected. It’s Tuesday and Steam runs server maintenance on Tuesdays. “This, it happens every week.” replied LeoHunter_350. THat’s when the servers go down briefly for maintenance and players need to coordinate around those times. The bigger issue is that there is no in-game warning that the servers will go down.

It’s been an issue with Steam games that rely on servers for a long time. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – it would be very useful to have a countdown prominently displayed in games, so players can know when to go offline. Without it, accounting for time zones is a hassle and most players aren’t even aware that maintenance is coming up.
