Dusk Golem: Capcom Wants Resident Evil 9 to Reach a Level of Critical Success to Get a 90+ Critical Score

It’s been about three years since the last Resident Evil game. Titled Resident Evil: Village it was praised by both players and critics alike. However, it didn’t manage to score more than 84 on the Metascore, which places it in the “Generally Favorable” category. Now, with the ninth installment in development, Capcom wants it to be better than its predecessor.

Go Big or Go Home

According to Dusk Golem (aka AestheticGamer), Capcom is determined that the newest Resident Evil game will hit over 90 on Meta Critic, which would put it into the “Universal Acclaim” category.

“Not only is Resident Evil 9 just an ambitious game, there hasn’t been a non-remake Resident Evil game that’s gotten the level of critical success to get a 90+ critical score. Hear Capcom is gunning really hard to make this great.”

“I know some will say, “Well of course they want to make a good game,” but in this case I mean they’re hyper aware they haven’t had a mainline non-remake RE achieve a 90+ Metascore since RE4 OG 20 years ago. Their hope is RE9 will be received by critics & fans as a top-line entry.”

This is quite an ambitious goal. Resident Evil 8: Village was an excellent game, but it didn’t manage to reach the “Universal Acclaim” level. Of course, today’s technology advanced considerably since 2021, but that also means that the bar is higher.

Release Date Window

According to various leakers and sources, RE9 is expected to be released somewhere in late 2025. Sony’s State of Play was broadcast yesterday, and they provided no info on Resident Evil 9’s release date. But, Tokiyo Game Show 2024 will be held from tomorrow, September 26, until September 29. Chances are more info will be revealed there since Capcom will be present.
