Assassin’s Creed Shadows Co-Op Mode in Development, Says Insider

The long-awaited Assassin’s Creed Shadows is getting closer and closer. This time the story is located in medieval Japan. The game follows two widely different protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, which is not that common for Assassin’s Creed games. The devs plan for it to be the best AC game ever, and they even postponed the release, to make sure that everything is working as intended and that the game is polished properly. But, since the game features two main characters, a lot of players asked if there will be a co-op mode. Initially, the game was supposed to be single-player only but now some rumors of a co-op mode being developed are circling.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Will Feature a Cooperative Mode

According to Insider, a co-op mode is in development for AC: Shadows. Assassin’s Creed games are predominantly single-player, with some having a multiplayer mode, like AC: Unity or AC: Brotherhood. The story usually follows a single protagonist but since AC: Shadows has two of those, it is no wonder that the devs want to add a co-op option. 

The co-op mode, going under the codename LEAGUE, is still in development and will be released post-launch, regardless of the recent postponement. It is expected that you will be able to play the main story with a friend, with one player going as Nasuke and the other as Naoe, but that’s just speculation.

The fans are thrilled with this news, with KvasirTheOld saying: “The Unity Co-op was amazing! I had a blast playing it with my friends! It really had a high skill ceiling and when you perfectly timed your actions with the team, you would get [some] absolutely amazing moments! It’s gonna be interesting to see how two characters with completely different play styles will work considering Yasuke isn’t really suited for stealth.” on Reddit.

For now, this is the only info we managed to find. As the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been postponed to the beginning of 2025, it will be a while until we get some new info concerning the co-op mode.
