This amazing game is chock-full of details. As with any other game, it’s always interesting to try to find the lore behind those details. Well, one of the most recent topics in the Path of Exile 2 community was the faces on the currency. Who were they? And why do they look so miserable?

Path of Exile 2 Is Full of Wonderful Little Details

Path of Exile 2 was released on December 6, 2024. At the time of writing this article, it’s been almost three weeks since the game dropped. In that time, this game managed to attract hundreds of thousands of players and even go Platinum and Gold in the Steam Awards. So, it isn’t surprising that there are players who pay close attention to details.

One player, cdavis0614, took to Reddit in search of some helpful answers. This player noted: “Lore Question: Why does POE currency have faces? Are these specific individuals?”. These questions triggered the curiosity in many players, as many have played the first installment for literally thousands of hours and never even thought about it.

Players Explain Potential Lore Behind the Faces on the Currency

Well, being an extremely helpful community, Path of Exile 2 community members offered their knowledge and imagination in search of the lore behind the faces on the currency. It’s truly astonishing to see how devoted and creative some of the players are.

One veteran of the first installment offered some eerie facts. Tyrexas noted: “We know from PoE 1 lore that the Vaal created the orbs (and gems). And, in PoE2 we’ve seen them sacrifice souls into soul cores to power devices, so they are probably people”.

As for who those people were, Optimal_Honor offered an explanation. This player stated: “It’s just the same concept as real-life currency. They aren’t specific individuals that we know of, but chaos orbs do look like Innocence from POE1. Someone a few years back commented on how each orb looks like what it does”.

One player, E-Trainnn, offered quite a funny theory. They joked: “It’s literally the face you make when you use them and nothing good happens higher tiers the sadder you get, duh”. Honestly, we took this personally.

Of course, these are just some of the theories. It would be wonderful to hear what the developers had in their minds when they created these faces. Until then, we’re more than satisfied with these fan theories. Do you have any?
