Players use a scanner in Atomic Heart to map out levels and find loot. It’s causing a lot of players issues because it’s not explained very well in the tutorial.
Luckily, if you know what to do, it’s incredibly easy. We’ve got a better guide on the Scanner below.
How To Turn the Scanner on in Atomic Heart
How to use the Scanner in Atomic Heart changes depending on your console. To use it on PC, you only need to hold down the Alt key.
To use it on PlayStation and Xbox, you need to press R1 or RB and then press and hold R1 or RB.
As long as you hold down the button, the Scanner will remain active. Make a habit of using the Scanner every few minutes. You won’t need to use it for very long.
The scanner is completely vulnerable while active, so it is important to remember not to dwell on it. While you scan the environment, you can only walk, so just get your information and then continue exploring.

What do the colors on the Scanner in Atomic Heart mean?
Here is an easy color code system for you to use:
- Blue: Container that can be looted. Items such as health-increasing items, ammunition, materials for crafting upgrades, and more will be available.
- Purple: Key items for moving forward in Atomic Heart. Make a beeline to the object whenever you see purple.
- Red/orange: An enemy (pretty common color for enemies). This also highlights the enemy’s weakness if you look at them. It shows what they’re resistant to, vulnerable to, and other information. Pay attention to the red if you want easy fights.
- White: Electrical or power lines, clues, and other things for quests. This is used to solve puzzles and complete objectives. This also helps with optional objectives.
- Yellow: Living being, inconsequential.
