The main quest line of Hogwarts Legacy consists of a total of 42 main quests (some people might say varying numbers like 43 or 47, depending on whether they mixed up the side quests and main quests). Plus, these main quests are further divided into 13 chapters. 

Sprinkled between these are numerous different side quests and adventures that will take you to different parts of the map and reward you with goodies. However, not doing the side quests will not harm your progression line in the slightest.

They will be revealed to you in order as you progress through the levels, discovering new locations and interacting with various NPCs.
