Silent and deadly – some big Helldivers 2 enemies really need sound cues

One of the holdout grievances players still have with Helldivers 2 is its lack of sound cues for some of the more bombastic enemies. For beings that should be loud and intimidating to deal with, many of them are surprisingly stealthy. While that can carry a jump-scare factor, it’s fundamentally detrimental to gameplay. Players have already spoken on the topic before, but it doesn’t seem that this fix is high on Arrowhead’s priority list.

Some enemies are big soft-footed ninjas

Automaton Berserkers are some of the most iconic silent enemies in the game. With a pair of chainsaw blades for hands, they rush at you and start slicing and chopping. Yet those blades barely let out a whirring sound. If you’ve been around a chainsaw, you’ll know how loud those things are! NameForThrowawayAcc on Reddit has asked the same question: “How long until we get chainsaw whirring sounds for these guys? It would both make them more menacing and give them sound queues everybody’s been asking for.”

While Berserkers are most notorious for their stealthiness, the discussion spread to other lumbering enemies that are way too soft-footed for their size. This includes both Automatons and Terminids, such as Bile Titans, Factory Striders, all Charger variants, and Hulks, to name a few. For creatures that are so big and heavy, they make surprisingly little noise. “90% of my deaths in the bug front are because I’m focused dealing with what is in front of me, when out of fucking nowhere I get ploughed by a charger that went to the ninja school of running in silence.”

It seems that PlayStation 5 players have an easier time detecting them, thanks to their controller’s haptic feedback: “This is one of those things I never actually noticed because if you play with a gamepad, the steps have vibration on, so you can feel them charging. Good for gamepads, but definitely something that [needs] addressing outside that for M+K/people who don’t use vibrate.” explained TheSunniestBro.

Sound cue changes are imminent?

There have been rumours that some sound changes were coming to the game, especially to fix the above concerns. Z1dan expressed: “They did say in the last update that they’re going to be working on giving enemies more sounds.” While they’re at it, the game could use a few more sounds – not just for detection, but to enrich gameplay and immersion too. We’d love to hear more from our Helldivers and their allies like Pelican-1 and Eagle-1. Similarly, more sounds for enemies alongside the sound cues would enrich the world. All we can say is that we hope that this gets fixed sooner rather than later. Otherwise, we’re still fearing that a Charger could be right behind us, even now.
