For a while now, players have been complaining about the lack of new content and the excruciatingly slow storylines. Sure, the Democracy Space Station is new, but not only is it not finished, but the players truly hated some of its aspects. Helldivers would love to get something that would have a bigger impact on the gameplay, like vehicles, new mission objectives, or… a new enemy faction. Well, Helldivers 2 players might be in luck, as it turns out the devs are testing some new content, including the Illuminates.
Some New Content Should Be Coming to Helldivers 2
The good news is that something is most likely coming soon. In a recent interview, Johan Pilestedt (the Arrowhead CCO) revealed that three big things are coming. During the same interview, the CCO insisted that the Illuminates weren’t coming back. He said: “Uh… They were banished from the galaxy 100 years ago. They will never come back”. Shams Jorjani, the CEO, added: “…but if they do, it would probably be a big problem”.
Well, by the looks of it, all of us Helldivers might be in a huge problem soon. If you check the Depot section on the Helldivers 2 page on Steamdb, you’ll understand what we’re talking about. At the time of writing this article, it’s been around 23 hours since a branch named “gameplay_illuminates” was updated.
One Helldiver, isozz, explained: “The “gameplay_illuminates” is a dev build so that they can develop and playtest an update before release. This way they can simply use Steam to start the game with the dev build enabled. Of course, it is protected by a password so no one but the developers can gain access”.
Helldivers Joke About Possibly Being Tricked Into the Illuminates Hype
Funnily enough, even though the majority of Helldivers 2 players would love to face the Illuminates, many expressed doubt that this faction would be the announced new content. So what else could the “gameplay_illuminates” be?
One player, SpreadLoveAlways, suggested: “Plot twist this is all testing for the Orbital Flare Stratagem”. Another player, syssiphus, joked: “Next patch notes: – We updated the lighting engine. Terrain should be illuminated much more realistically now”.
Vitnage noted: “Can’t wait for it being an update on the lighting in the gameplay and everyone getting bamboozled. I would expect them to troll us. I would expect them to accidentally leak it too. So, 50/50”.
Truth be told, we don’t know. For a while now, the devs have been teasing new content relentlessly, usually without giving any specifics. So, this might be just another tease to hype up the players. On the other hand, they’ve accidentally leaked stuff before, so there’s no way to tell which scenario this is.
