Liberty Day is looming large, and the Helldivers 2 community has spent the past few weeks speculating on what that could mean for the game and its fans. From wild guesses to hopeful wishlists, players have thrown all sorts of ideas around. What we do know for certain is that something is coming – but whatever it is, someone’s going to be disappointed. With that, maybe we should take a step back and acknowledge the hard work that went into all the recent updates. Whatever comes on Liberty Day is just a culmination of everything that led to it, and a good portion of the fanbase feels the same.
A grab-bag of expectations that’s too big to fulfil
We know one thing for sure – something is coming on Liberty Day. Baskinator, one of HD2 Community Managers, has confirmed as much on the game’s Discord. When asked for hints if we can expect something or is it going to be business as usual, Baskinator cryptically responded: “Not business as usual. We have something fun planned. I think you’ll like it.”
Now, players have come up with their own theories over the past few weeks. From ideas like the Illuminate making a long-awaited appearance to free Warbonds and more. Yet should the community curb their expectations? Yung-Floal proposed something like that on Reddit, saying:
“For the past 60 days the devs have been hard at work making improvements to this game to get it to the phenomenal state it’s in now. Naturally, I think it’s reasonable to assume that they’re probably a little behind on their content schedule. I see a lot of people saying things like “The Illuminate have to be coming on Liberty Day! It’s the perfect time!” or people saying there should be a free Warbond coming. I’ve only read about a few past experiences from HD1, which all sounded awesome and very wholesome. Devs seemed very generous with how much they gave the community in the past. Given this is a new game, and its life has been full of ups and downs, I have a feeling we’re gonna just get 1-2 lil’ goodies on Liberty Day and have a good time. I do not have any super high expectations for Liberty Day personally but in a very understanding way since I know they’ve been busy frying bigger fish. Would you guys be upset? What do you realistically think is gonna come on Liberty Day?”
It’s safer to assume that nothing truly massive will drop on Liberty Day and then be surprised if it does. DungeonEnvy added another interesting point to the discussion: “They’re not dropping a new massive content update on Liberty Day. Why? It’s a Saturday. You just don’t do that. Too much potential for things to go wrong and suddenly your entire team is pulling OT. What I do expect: the Constitution bolt action rifle, and the start of the next major storyline that will climax with the Illuminate arrival.”
Many in the community agree with the above, stating that we’ll be happy with any amount of new content. Something nice to mark the occasion, with perhaps some development in the game’s lore. With the rate that the devs have been updating the game recently, it’s only fair to expect nothing major on the game balance front. What do you expect to see from the Liber-tea Day celebration?
