Datamining through Helldivers 2 files in search of melee weapons is PAN-ing out well

One of the most requested features for Helldivers 2 have been viable melee weapons. For a long time, players have clamoured for an opportunity to get close and personal with our enemies. Now, how that would play out against something like a Bile Titan or an Annihilator Tank is anyone’s guess, but given a chance, I’d be the first to try! However, one of the first signs that the community chooses to interpret this way is – none other than a simple pan.

Cast iron and ready for trouble, bonk!

One dataminer who goes by Digital–Hazard on Reddit has shared their latest discovery. It’s none other than a cast iron frying pan. Does that mean that Gordon Ramsey is an in-universe Helldiver? We can certainly hope so, but more importantly, what would that mean for the game? The most obvious (and boring) suggestion is that it could just be another set-dressing item. However, as can be seen in the image, it has two modelled states. One is for when it’s whole and intact, and another has it all bent and banged up – that squiggly edge in the middle.

This would suggest that it might yet serve some function in the game, though it still doesn’t rule out two set-dressing states. But we can hope. And hoping with us are many other Helldivers 2 fans. Naoura jokingly remarks: “They’re…. they’re deploying General Brasch’s private armory?! Sweet Liberty… the Illuminate truly are coming…”

One sceptic player doubts that it’s even a pan, saying: “Unless the actual file name is like pan or metal pot, I’m going to assume this is just the top of the model for the tanks that we’re going to be getting.” However, the OP quickly cleared that up: “Its file name is “portable_fryingpan_01”, but if you can actually pick it up I have no clue.”, keeping our culinary hopes alive.

Whatever it is, we’re way too excited to see it in-game and dread the letdown when it’s not an actually usable weapon. Arrowhead, give us a way to bonk the bugs and cook them with democratic seasoning. The storyline is writing itself!
