Exclusivity and FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) are some of the most effective sales strategies for any company. Having an item available indefinitely is one thing, but having it available for purchase for only a limited time after which it will be gone forever will make anyone think twice before letting it go away. It is an effective sales tactic that a lot of companies use. For Epic, it comes in the form of limited-time skins. In other words, some Outfits are there just for a limited time, after which they are gone forever, making them a high-value item, and a prized possession for those who got them.
Fortnite Accidentally Made The Paradigm Available Once Again
On October 12, 2019, Epic released a couple of exclusive Emotes along with The Paradigm skin and made them available only for a limited time. Naturally, those who purchased that Outfit are proud of the fact that they own an exclusive item. Fast forward five years and on August 6 The Paradigm skin accidentally appeared in the shop for a short while, before being removed. In short, Epic decided to let those who purchased the Outfit keep it, while also giving out refunds. Talk about a win-win situation.
However, those who had the skin from before will get “…a brand new variant of The Paradigm that we’ll grant exclusively to people who purchased the original Outfit. Original purchasers will also have the option to refund this item if they’d like.” This is all well and good, but those who bought the original skin are not too happy with this.
Fans Divided Over the Whole Controversy
As you’d expect, owners of the original Outfit, who bought the item with the idea of owning a cosmetic that others will not, are a bit miffed by it all. And we get it, when you get a limited-time, one-and-done item, you don’t expect to see it in the shop again. Kinda defeats the point of the whole thing.
On the other hand, the majority is happy with the outcome. You can see players happy they were finally able to complete the whole “set”. Next, DartBoardGamer stated: “Someone bought it and got to have fun? Zero damage. Just let people buy things.” Finally, chark_uwu said: “Epic would start making billions if they just do this for every skin and the only people [unhappy] would be Gatekeepers who need to be shunted out of society as a whole “
But, the shortest end of the stick was drawn by those who weren’t there during the shop rotation, when The Paradigm was available. TxTDiamond proclaimed: “I intentionally didn’t buy it on the idea that it would be removed from lockers, saw I was right, and now regret my decision to see they changed their mind, I’ve wanted this skin for years it better come back again”. User HootOwlOfDoom said it best: “So OG owners will get a new style, the people who were lucky enough to get it today will get to keep it for free (vbucks refunded), and the rest of us can go [to heck]. I’m a little miffed. I’d have purchased it if I’d had half a chance and they could’ve kept the vbucks too.”
In the end, no solution would appease everyone. Whatever you do, some groups will not be satisfied with it. Epic chose to route to keep the somewhat limited status of the skin, and that is fine. But, since it looks like some of those who have the original skin would be totally fine with others also having it, maybe just keeping it in the Shop would be the better solution.
