We have been waiting for 13 years for Alan Wake’s sequel and the wait is almost over. Scheduled for 27 October, we can’t wait to see what new horrors await our bestselling thriller author. Will he manage to escape The Dark Place while writing a horror story involving an FBI agent Saga Anderson? But what engine will be responsible for our visual experience?
Is Alan Wake 2 Running on Unreal Engine 5?
Controversial, but no, Alan Wake 2 will not use UE5. It is official that AW2 uses Remedy’s own Northlight engine. Epic Games are the developers of Unreal Engine 5 and are also partnered up with Remedy Entertainment. So it was quite a bold decision that Remedy chose to stick with their own in-house engine. They claim that Northlight is more suited to the type of experience they want to create. Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director stated that “Alan Wake 2 will, by far, be the best-looking, most beautiful Remedy game ever”

What is Northlight?
As you have probably figured out, Northlight engine is an in-house engine developed by Remedy Entertainment. They claim that Northlight can better capture facial expressions using surface capture and 4D scanning than previous engines they used. It is well-suited for photorealistic characters and cinematic realism which is an essential part of Alan Wake 2 experience. Which is probably why Alan Wake 2 is next-gen exclusive. It is worth knowing that the Northlight engine is responsible for games such as Quantum Break, CrossfireX, and the award-winning Control. It seems we are in for a treat.
