Diablo 4 – What is Primary Resource? Explained

Characters of different classes from Diablo 4 posing around a fire.

You most probably came across the term Primary Resource while adventuring in Sanctuary and wondered what it is. This article is here to explain what Primary Resource is in Diablo 4, so join us in this short explanation.

Diablo IV has a variety of terms, mechanics, and resources you have to wrap your head around. Many are quite straightforward, like Life for example, but some require more explanation. You have seen the term Primary Resource on Aspects, gear, etc, but there is nothing named Primary Resource in your HUD. Then what it is?

What Does Primary Resource Mean in Diablo 4?

Primary Resource is a catch-all term for the Resource your Class is using for its Skills. Usually, it was called Mana, but from Diablo 3 onward every Class has its own Resource and a related mechanic. Those Primary Resources are:

  • Barbarian: Fury
  • Druid: Spirit
  • Necromancer: Essence
  • Rogue: Energy
  • Sorcerer: Mana

Note that Necromancer has a secondary resource – Corpses. That is probably the reason these are named Primary Resources, not just Resources. Most of the Skills in Diablo 4 either generate or use your Primary Resource, so balancing these two factors is the core of the game.

How is Primary Resource Generated?

Each Primary Resource has its way of generating. Some just replenish over time, and some have to be generated on the spot. To be more precise, every class regenerates its Resource over time, apart from Barbarian. That means that Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer each regenerate their Primary Resource over time until it reaches its maximum.

Also, every Class has Skills that generate Resources. For example, Druid’s Blood Howl skill states that it generates 20 Spirit. Barbarian, on the other hand, starts at 0 Fury and generates it through Skills. Effectively, the more you are in combat as a Barbarian, the more Fury you will have. It is important to mention that every Class also has a way of increasing its maximum Resource cap. It is recommended to have at least one Aspect or Item that improves your Primary Resource generation. The Aspect of the Umbral is great for every Class for that reason.
