Looking to upgrade gems to help power up your character’s gear in Diablo 4? We’ve got you covered with a step-by-step reference guide on upgrading all gem types at the Jeweler.

With the launch of Diablo 4 – Season of the Malignant, players can now take on Malignant Monsters to obtain Malignant Hearts and earn a long list of new rewards. To defeat the formidable foes that await you in Sanctuary, you’re going to need to give your character an exceptional build by carefully assigning skills and upgrading the armor, weapons, and jewelry at your disposal. That’s where gems come in — from skulls to sapphires and emeralds, the type and quality of the gems you acquire can affect the power of your stat boosts when you socket them. Here’s how you can upgrade the gems you find to better your build in Diablo 4.

How to Upgrade Gems in Diablo 4

To upgrade gems in Diablo 4, you’ll first need to reach level 20 and complete a quest that requires you to upgrade a Crude Ruby into a Chipped Ruby. Upon completion, you will unlock the Jeweler, who you must visit in order to upgrade the gems you have. Additionally, you’ll be able to craft new items, add sockets to your gear, and upgrade jewelry — all of which benefit from upgrading your gems, first and foremost.

Gems can be upgraded in stages, which range from Crude to Royal. The lesser the quality of your gems, the lesser their stat boost when applied to gear, weapons, and jewelry. Because of this, you’ll want to prioritize upgrading gems until you reach a higher level and have access to better quality gem drops. In the meantime, you’ll need several gems of equal quality in order to upgrade them at the Jeweler. Here’s a better look at what you’ll need for each upgrade.
