These difficulty levels are called World Tiers in the game, and each tier provides a specific challenge depending on the player’s familiarity with the genre. How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 4?
The World Tier can be changed at any time during a game that has already been started, but there are only two specific methods to change the difficulty. The first method to change the World Tier is right before loading a saved game. There are no penalties for changing the difficulty, so there are no worries about having to start over because the previous saved game has locked players out on in-game achievements
The other method to change World Tier is during the game, but players will have to visit a World Tier Statue within the game to do so. It cannot be changed in a menu or in the settings, but a physical location that the player’s character will have to go to within the game’s environment. World Tier Statues are marked on the map, and there is one located in the first hub city that players visit, Kyovashad.
How Are the World Tiers Different?
There are four World Tiers in Diablo 4, each providing a different level of challenge. Starting players will only have access to World Tier 1 (Adventurer) and World Tier 2 (Veteran). World Tier 1 provides a lighter challenge with enemies that are easier to defeat, while World Tier 2 has harder enemies with an increase of XP and gold earned.
There are also World Tier 3 (Nightmare) and World Tier 4 (Torment), but both are for players that have beaten the game and progressed through challenges. Specifically, World Tier 3 is for players above Level 50, while World Tier 4 is meant for players who are above Level 70.
World Tier can have a huge effect on Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, item quality, rewards, and endgame. Nightmare difficulty can be painful if your character is not prepared. You can expect tougher enemies, but better gear drops that increase your stats.
