How to Buy More Land in Cities Skylines 2

If you’re looking to expand your city outward in Cities Skylines 2, then there are a couple of steps you’ll need to take. Before you enter the market for a new plot, you’ll first need to focus your attention on the existing population. In turn, this will help your city grow. With this in mind, expansion can be broken down into two simple steps:

  1. Reach the Worthy Village population target
  2. Purchase a new plot of land

Become a Worthy Village

In order to actually expand your city in Cities Skylines 2, you’ll need enough citizens. While there’s a long list of ways to attract new residents, you’ll generally want to focus on available quality-of-life features. This will help you reach the Worthy Village population milestone, which grants you the following unlocks.

  • District creation
  • Fire and police services
  • The option to purchase a new plot of land

Those looking to expand should focus their efforts on reaching this major milestone and each that follows. This is how you gain access to new plots. Eventually, you’ll have the ability to purchase all nine plots of land per map.

Purchase New Land

Once you’ve reached the Worthy Village milestone, you can purchase another plot of land. The same is true each time you reach another population target. To get a better lay of the land (literally), you’ll need to enter area view and make your purchase. You can find this view in the bottom-left of your screen, conveniently located next to the milestones tab.

In area view, you’ll see your city in its current state on the map, as well as plots available for purchase. Generally, these will include 9×9 tiles that connect directly to your existing city. Areas you’ve bought will be highlighted in blue. By hovering over a desired plot, you’ll see a rundown of that area’s statistics. This includes information about space that can be used for building in addition to available resources and any outside connections, like railways and more.

Weigh your options before making your decision, as further development will cost you money. Because of this, we recommend choosing tiles that will benefit your city, such as locations that provide necessary resources. A tile selected for purchase will turn green. As you reach new milestones, you can then purchase more plots.
