As one of the most popularized battle royale games to date, Fortnite operates online with a worldwide community of players. Given the size of the game’s user base, Fortnite developer and publisher Epic Games, has faced a lot of inquiries regarding refund methods in the six years since the game’s initial release.

The bulk of these inquiries relate to a legal battle between Epic Games and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been settled at long last. The result is a $245 million settlement and refunds for three affected groups of Fortnite players.

Of course, some Fortnite players remain unaffected by the settlement and simply wish to get refunds for unwanted or unused items.

Let’s go over how affected groups and other players can refund their Fortnite accounts.

Can I Refund My Fortnite Account?

Yes and no, depending on the details of your purchase(s).

In a statement released by the FTC in December of 2022, three groups of Fortnite players were identified as eligible to receive a refund for their Fortnite accounts.

These groups are:

  • Parents whose children made unauthorized credit card purchases from the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • Players who were charged in-game currency (V-Bucks) for unwanted in-game items (such as llamas, battle passes, or cosmetics) between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • Players whose accounts were locked or suspended between January 2017 and September 2022 after disputing unauthorized charges with their credit card companies.

How Do I Refund My Fortnite Account if I Was Affected?

The FTC goes on to say that if you believe you qualify for a refund, there are no steps to be taken at this time.

The FTC will continue to provide updates within the issued statement when they have more information regarding a refund program. In the meantime, e-mail notices will be sent to those who paid for in-game purchases and signed up for FTC updates.

The FTC also notes that they will never ask you to pay to file a claim or get a refund, so don’t pay anyone who has promised you a refund in exchange for any fee.

How Do I Refund My Fortnite Account if I Was Unaffected?

If you were unaffected by the settlement between the FTC and Epic Games, you may still be able to get a refund for unwanted in-game purchases.

Every Fortnite account is given three Return Tickets for the return of in-game cosmetic items after the option to cancel the purchase has expired. These tickets can be used at any time, and your account is rewarded one additional ticket annually if you have less than three. You may never hold over three tickets at one time.

However, gifts are not eligible for refunds, and unwanted cosmetic items can only be refunded within 30 days of your purchase.

To get a refund for unwanted items, follow these steps:

  • From the lobby, go to Settings.
  • Click Support & Refunds.
  • Click Return or Cancel Purchase.
  • From the in-game purchases you’ve made in the last 30 days, you will be asked to select the item(s) you would like refunded. Select your items.
  • Choose the Use Return Ticket directive.
  • You will be shown the items you’ve selected for a refund. Verify these are the desired items by selecting Yes.
  • You will be asked to verify once more. Select Yes if you’re sure.
  • You will be take to another screen. Your refunded items will be removed and V-Bucks will be added to your in-game wallet.

Luckily, many Fortnite players seeking refunds can easily complete the process regardless of the FTC ruling.
