If you haven’t been living under a rock, you heard that Baldur’s Gate 3 is the top-rated game of 2023. With its D&D-inspired gameplay, superb voice acting, and tons of other content, it was expected. While traveling the world of Faerun, you can encounter hundreds of side quests. For example, you can save people stuck in windmills, investigate the appearance of a strange animal wherever you go, and even make a slight detour to another plane of existence. You know, the usual. You can even find some weird books, that can lead you to some dangerous knowledge. Here we will talk about a quest just like that. So let’s see where to find Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Where to Find The Necromancy of Thay Book?
To find the Necromancy of Thay tome, follow these instructions. First, go to the Blighted Village Waypoint. Enter the large apothecary’s house right next to it. Inside, look for Apothecary’s Ledger, located on the bar counter, next to some roots and Potions. Read it, and it will point you to the Cellar. Click on the Wooden Hatch behind the bar to go down to the Cellar.
Apothecary Cellar
Once down, look for a lever to open a hidden passageway. The lever is close by, on a diagonal stretch of the wall, behind some Wooden Crates. While you’re at it, look for and read the Healer’s Log, as it will help you later.
Follow the now-open passageway and you’ll come across some Caskets, where undead guardians are hiding. You can sneak past them or fight them to get some XP. On the southern wall, you will find an Ornate Mirror that you can talk to. You must trick it or Intimidate it to let you pass.
When asked who you are, you must say “Yes, an ally! An ally of your master’s.” Then, when asked about Szass Tam, reply “A foul lich. May he die a thousand more deaths.” or “Szass Tam is a foul, wretched creature.” or anything along those lines. When asked about the balsam ointment, the knowledge we got from reading the Healer’s Log will point you that it is used to clean wounds. Finally, the mirror will ask you what you see in it, and the correct answer is “I’d look for whatever spell will rid me of this work in my head.” This will open the door to the hidden lair.

The Location of The Necromancy of Thay
Enter the hidden lair, and in one of the small rooms, a pantry-looking one, look for a Rusted Key. Now, look for a Rusted Iron Gate, with two flaming braziers on its sides. Be warned, there is a trap in front of the gate. Disarm it and use the Rusted Key to open the Gate. Inside you will see a tome on an altar. That is the Necromancy of Thay. If you pick it up, the two gargoyle traps will trigger. You can:
- Disarm the gargoyle traps.
- Replace the book with another book.
- Take the book and try to survive the traps.
What to Do With The Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Now, as the book is in your possession, you have two options.
You can destroy the book and the evil knowledge it hides by dropping it to the floor and dealing some Radiant Damage to it. This will trigger a fight with some Shadows so be ready for that.
You can try to open to book, by obtaining a Dark Amethyst. You can find one by going down the Blighted Village well, into the Whispering Depths. It is guarded by a Phase Spider Matriarch. Once you defeat her, search the area around the big hole in her lair, and you will find a Dark Amethyst. Remember, you can press the Alt key to highlight objects, to help you find it. Place the Amethyst in the tome and it will open. Reading the tome will require some Wisdom checks, so prepare accordingly.
