We all know that BG3 is one of the most successful and popular games of today. Players have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours in the game, exploring every nook and cranny, dialogue options, and endings possible. And that is all thanks to a dedicated developer team, Larian. Previously known for the Divinity: Original Sin series (great games, both of them), they have taken the gigantic task of making the sequel to Baldur’s Gate 2, 23 years later. And that hard work paid off, as BG3 has reported massive successes in every field, basically becoming a modern gaming phenomenon, and rightfully so. Baldur’s Gate 3 is almost single-handedly responsible for getting Larian out of a tight spot, as their revenue reports indicate that their profit for 2023 is around 250 million Euros.
Massive Success of Baldur’s Gate 3 Resulted in €249.000.000 Pre-Tax Profit for Larian
According to the Irish Independent, “The holding company for Belgian-controlled games studio Larian, which runs its revenue through its Dublin arm, posted a €249m pre-tax profit last year as the major success of its Baldur’s Gate 3 title supercharged its sales.”
Before the release of BG3, Larian was in a tight spot, reporting a loss of approximately €200.000. It is not a small amount of money, but, when you compare it to the earnings due to BG3, it is only about 1% of the whole sum.
As for the number of copies sold, while we don’t have an official report, it is believed that the number is somewhere around 15m. Earlier this year, it was speculated that the number of BG3 copies sold was around 10 million, so it is safe to assume that around 15 million copies have been sold in total by now.
All of this only goes to show that massive single-player games (yes, you can play BG3 as a multiplayer, but it is widely considered a single-player game) still have a place in today’s gaming world, and we can’t wait to see what Larian is preparing next.
