Have you encountered a strange magical chest in the Owlbear cave in Baldur’s Gate 3? That chest can be quite troublesome to open, but our guide will help you get the job done.
Most Baldur’s Gate 3 players know what’s the main significance in visiting the Owlbear cave. For those who don’t know, that’s where you have the option to start the process of getting your very own Owlbear Cub. However, exploring the cave further reveals some cool secrets, such as a statue of Selune and a mysterious locked chest, protected by magical barriers. Here’s the complete guide how to open it.
Where is the Locked Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Cave? Chest’s location guide
After entering the cave, you can find and open the chest before or after the encounter with the Owlbear in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, there are benefits to locating it before the encounter that we will explore later on. First, make sure to enter the cave through the main entrance.
Initially, it may look like you have to go all the way around the bend (and through the Owlbear) to get to the chest. However, there’s a ledge on the left side from the entrance that your party can scale down. That gives you early access to the chest.
The chest is locked and magically warded. If you try to tamper with it, it will deal significant damage to your characters, and there’s no visible key or lockpick method. Here’s how to do it.
Walkthrough How To Open the Gilded Chest of Selune
Select your character and use the Jump action across the ledge to where the statue is located. Go behind the statue, and this will trigger a Perception check. Succeeding will let your party spot a piece of paper with a Selune prayer on it. This is the Selunite Prayer Sheet, and you’ll need it for the next step.
Now the fun part – give the prayer to a character with the Religion skill, or a good chance of passing a Religion check. But an important note: do not give it to Shadowheart if you care about her opinion. Better yet, leave Shadowheart near the entrance, where she can’t overhear the prayer. She and her goddess Shar are not the biggest Selune fans.
Have the character Read the prayer, and passing the Religion check will lift the protection from the Gilded Chest of Selûne, letting you loot it. Inside is not much though, just an Idol of Selûne, a silver necklace, and a Bloodstone gem. Interestingly, Shadowheart isn’t all too pleased if you give her the Idol of Selune, but she will get Inspiration when you open the chest due to her Acolyte background.
However, there are other things to loot to your inventory next to the chest, such as a Potion of Speak with Animals. Imbibing it before engaging the Owlbear will let you resolve the encounter peacefully, though this may result in locking you out of getting the Cub later on. Further in the cave, there is also an Owlbear Egg in the Owlbear Nest that mama-bear is protecting.
