Are you confused about the function of the True Strike spell in Baldur’s Gate 3? This guide will explain all the ins and outs behind the cantrip.
The True Strike spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the many similarities the game shares with original Dungeons and Dragons on the tabletop. However, one thing most players underestimate is how niche the True Strike effect actually is. While it does help guarantee landing an attack, is it really worth the return? In this guide, we’ll be talking about what exactly using True Strike does and when you should use it.
How Does True Strike Work in Baldur’s Gate 3
True Strike is a Cantrip-level spell from the Divination school. Its basic purpose is to give your character Advantage on the next Attack Roll. The spell requires Concentration and the effect remains over the next two turns or until an attack hits. True Strike has a range of 18m and can actually be learned by multiple classes. This includes classes like Bard, Warlock, Wizard, Ranger, Sorcerer, Fighter, and Rogue. It is purely a support spell and doesn’t provide any negative ailment to the enemy.
While everyone loves to have a guaranteed hit chance on their attacks, this spell is rarely used by players. The effect is definitely useful, as many times you may need your next strike to land, or otherwise you might lose. However, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of using this spell.

Why Players Don’t Use True Strike
The simple answer to why players don’t use the True Strike spell is because it takes up a Concentration slot and costs an Action to cast. Moreover, the Concentration can easily be broken if an enemy attacks the caster.
Due to this downside of True Strike, many players would rather opt to perform other actions on their turn rather than cast a coinflip spell. While it’s true that some attacks with low hit-chance would really benefit from the effects of True Strike, more often than not, it’s not worth the risk. You could just cast another spell or use an attack and hope that it hits.
That said, True Strike is definitely a niche spell, but not utterly useless. So, let’s talk about the situations where True Strike can be really effective.
When Should You Use True Strike?
The best time to use True Strike would be before a battle when you can go stealthed, especially as a Rogue. The Stealth will allow you to have a preemptive strike, giving you an Attack Roll with Advantage for the next two turns. You can also use it mid-battle with Arcane Trickster Rogues, who can use it to trigger their sneak attacks.
Another advantage of using True Strike is that you can use it on allies rather than yourself. If you have a protected character who is not in danger of getting their Concentration disrupted, they can cast the spell for an ally to get the most out of it.
