Larian Studios’ game Baldur’s Gate 3 has become a new phenomenon for gamers, amassing more than 800k peak players on Steam. Although the game is highly polished for PC standards, it is certainly not without issues and new codes for Errors. Ever since its full launch, several bugs and crashes have been ruining people’s experience, including a frustrating Error Code 222. Let’s learn what Error Code 222 is, its causes, and how to fix it!

What Is Error Code 222 in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Error Code 222 usually occurs when players try to load a previously saved game. The exact error message reads, “Savegame load failed. Error code(s): 222 Contact Larian Support if this keeps happening.”

Before we proceed toward the solutions for this error message, let’s quickly take a look at some potential causes behind this Error Code 222 to get a better understanding of the problem at hand:

  1. From what is reported by several players, it appears that one of the hotfixes deployed by Larian Studios post-launch could be causing this issue. The hotfix changes the actions of your companion, Lae’zel. Due to the conflict between Lae’zel’s in-game actions and your current game state in the save files, Error Code 222 is preventing you from loading your save.
  2. Since there is a limit to the number of save slots you can create in the game, it is likely that your save files have exceeded the capacity. In such a case, the game might end up deleting some of your saved files without permission, causing you to lose your gameplay progress.

How To Fix Baldur’s Gate 3 Error Code 222?

If you’re infuriated with the constant reoccurrence of Error Code 222, you’re not alone in this hassle. It has been reported by dozens of players since launch, with many not being able to proceed past the Act 1 of the game. If you find yourself in a similar boat, one of the following workarounds is sure to fix this issue for you.

  1. The simplest solution is to go back to a previously saved file and load a previously saved game from the menu. This method isn’t ideal since you may lose an hour or two of progress, but it is guaranteed to work since you’ll get rid of the corrupted save slot entirely.
  2. Refrain from saving in the problematic parts of Act 1. Since the issue seems to be occurring in areas of Act 1 that were affected due to the hotfix patch, it’s a good idea to avoid manually saving those parts. We recommend using only the default autosave feature until you reach Act 2.
  3. Raise a ticket to Larian Games and send them your corrupted save file to see if they can resolve the problem. If you’re lucky, the devs should be able to fix the corrupt file and get your save up and running.

Some players suggest deleting the BG’s AppData folder, more specifically C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur’s Gate 3\LevelCache folder. Others recommend checking the integrity of your game files on your Steam client for repairs or simply running the installation once again.
