Unsurprisingly, BG3 has a lot of fighting in it. Cleaving through the Goblin camp or satisfying your dark urges will surely make a mess. And that can result in your character being, well, not as presentable as they should be. Even though initiating a romance cutscene while your character is covered in blood and grime won’t kill the mood, it is hardly civilized. Usually, the characters clean themselves up when setting up camp for a Long Rest. But, there is a widely overlooked method in Baldur’s Gate 3 to clean yourself up in the middle of your adventure, using Sponges and Soaps.
Use Sponges and Soaps to Keep Yourself Clean in Baldur’s Gate 3
We’ve all seen the cutscene where our whole party is covered in filth and the remains of our enemies. It does look cool at the beginning but gets old pretty fast. Unbeknownst to a lot of players, there is a miscellaneous item that can help you in that regard. We all picked up some Rope, Plates, Mirrors, or anything similar, hoping they would see some use. But, items that you can actually use for their intended purpose are Sponges and Soaps.
Unsurprisingly, you can use them to clean yourself up from all the “dirt, blood, and face-paint”. It also removes unpleasant odors, which will come in handy when you want to bypass the Ghoul guarding the entrance to the Circus in Act 3. Truly, Larian thinks of everything. The surprise is that the function of Soaps and Sponges flew under the radar for the majority of players and is almost unheard of in the community.
You can find these items all over the place, but usually in taverns and some places of high hygiene, like Sharess’ Caress. Some can even be purchased from vendors, and Mattis will even try to sell you a totally legit “Holy Hand Soap” at some point.
It is worth noting that Soaps are one-use-only, but Sponges can be used to your heart’s content. Bear in mind that you can’t use Soaps in battle (for obvious reasons), unlike Sponges who are totally battle-ready (and require an Action to do so).
Sure, you can use water (either running, in bottles, or as a spell) to clean yourself up, but if it is unavailable, it’s good to have a sponge handy. As they say, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. But don’t Gale, he might get some ideas. It always surprises us how much attention Larian paid to even the smallest details in Baldur’s Gate 3.
