Will the Next Grand Theft Auto Be on the Switch?

With news of Rockstar's L.A. Noire releasing on Nintendo's newest platform in November, could the publisher be willing to make the next Grand Theft Auto game on the system too?

by the time GTA VI comes out it will be 2022/2023 using the latest technology of that era, I don't think base PS4/XB1 would be able to handle that let alone the inferior Switch.

Mid gen consoles are completely different to the Switch. You wouldn't make GTAVI an exclusive to those consoles as there would be hell on.

Don't twist this. You've got more of a chance to get GTA4 or Red Dead Redemption then GTAVI...hell even a re release of Bully or something.

GTAVI will also be including the next version of GTA Online....do you honestly think the Switch can handle GTA Online when they can't even do a proper online now?

GTA is a console game that's ported to pc, so that is irrelevant. Plus, technically yes consoles do hold back pc. When pc had specs higher than ps4 years before it couldn't present alot of games a ps4 levels graphics (higher res tho) but because most games were ports to pc.

@Teflon Consoles are not holding PC back. When you consider that current consoles are about as powerful as the average PC on Steam, you can reasonably conclude that the only thing holding back games is consumer thriftiness. If consoles were to disappear tomorrow, all current console owners wouldn't go out and buy a $1500 gaming PC, they'd likely buy a PC equivalent to what their console was. Console price points aren't arbitrary. They strike a balance between performance and cost.

What are you smoking Erik?? GTAV was a technical marvel running on PS3/360. R* pulled off an incredible job with those consoles. If they held back anything it surely didn't show as the game looked freaking amazing and ran absolutely perfect. It's a 4 year old game now and it's still one of the best looking open worlds, heavily populated, with 100's of unique missions/random events/activities and ran buttery smooth.

Its not like they would force the same dude to make twice as many art assets, they would pay someone else to make lower poly/res versions, or they could just use the LOD models. The online mode would suffer from Switch's horrible online system, but i don't see why they couldn't make crappy single player only cash grab game, theres millions of fools with Switches already.

Sorry but all the hardware is in the handheld. The dock is a hollow piece of plastic that connects it to TV. Now of the dock was full of tech I'd agree with you. You can play Switch 100% of the time on handheld mode, the dock is optional, the tablet is essential.

It's already been CONFIRMED that the Switch can handle the newest version of Unreal 4, so if the producers WANTED to put Tomb Raider on there using Unreal, THEY COULD, same goes for a new GTA using the engine.

I don't think so. Even this were to happen, I can see it being downgraded to oblivion. So I can't see Rockstar being willingly to do that much work when they can just sell it just fine on other platforms.

Obviously things could always change, especially if the Switch keep selling and have more fanbase. They wouldn't ignore it if it has a large fanbase, just like when they release GTA Chinatown War on the DS. I would gladly welcome another orginal GTA title like that.

That's not enough of a downgrade for anyone to rightfully bash it over; I doubt it would be any different with a new GTA if they used an engine that the Switch can handle, like Unreal 4.

The only real issue is, as you pointed out, the fanbase.
It doesn't exist on Switch yet, and Rockstar would have an uphill battle trying to make the existing fanbase on other consoles care for the Nintendo version, after decades of third parties just like them doing their best to ignore Nintendo, and convincing their fans to do so in the process.

They'd have to do a new entry of the IP for all consoles including the Switch, and make all versions content-complete, to have a chance of making Switch owners happy enough for their IP to start spreading its wings on Switch in a big way.
As of right now, I can't see anyone who has been a fan of the series since day 1 going over to Switch for the newest version, even if the Nintendo version somehow had better graphics, because that's not where the fanbase has invested their love of the series.

To be blunt, console bias plays a bigger role than love of the series does, which is probably why they've never bothered putting it on a Nintendo home console in the first place.
That will probably insult some people here, but it's the truth, so I don't care. Even people who have multiple consoles, are going to have certain IP's that they'd prefer to never play on any console other than the one they first picked it up on.
We see it all the time, but no one ever calls them out on it because it always starts fights.

It can pretty much handle GTA 5, but the battery life would have lasted maybe 2 hours at best. I still hope, however, that GTA V will make its way to the Switch. GTA online on the go, espcially with the PUBG-style mode, would be freaking awesome.

Nintendo doesn't need to make hardcore games themselves. Fact is, they would probably suck at that, because it's not their area of expertise; they excel at games that are friendly for all ages.

On the other hand, Nintendo hasn't impeded third party developers to make more mature games for their systems. Zombi U, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (which Nintendo themselves published on Wii U), Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 (which included sexy Nintendo themed costumes for Bayo 1), House of the Dead Overkill and Manhunt on Wii, etc.

If a third party developer wants to make a mature game on a Nintendo system, they can. The ONLY recent example I can think of where Nintendo actively rejected something was Binding of Isaac for the 3DS, because at the time it violated Nintendo's policies regarding religion:

I really doubt it. Porting a last gen game over to 3 new platforms doesn't mean anything. It's cheap to do and could make money. Building a whole game for current gen then porting that to an under powered system (comparing it to Xbox one, ps4 and pc) will take a lot of work and resources to get a balanced version.

Rockstar could do it, but I just don't see it.
