God of War team considered setting the new game in Egypt

The God of War we saw unveiled at Sony's press conference was an unfamiliar one. Kratos is back, but he's now got himself a son and a massive beard. There's a new camera angle to consider and a story that might have something to say about fatherhood. And then there's the setting!

Egyptian gods are cool but I like the new setting.

Although new PS4 exclusives run the risk of all games having that same 'woods' look.

Noticed that myself. All of GoW, Horizon and Days Gone had some similar looking woods area.

I'm not complaining, especially when they look that pretty. :)

I would LOVE a GoW type game in an Egyptian setting!

Come to think of it, why hasn't that happened yet? A game like that (of good quality) would probably sell boatloads!

I love Egyptian mythology, and the gods are so cool, I dont think I would want to kill isis ,Horus,osiris, I'd rather kill the bad Egyptian gods, but knowing god of war you'll prolly end up killing all of them, so I'm fine with Norse mythology lol sorry if that made no sense

Now it makes sense that it is not Egyptian mythology. Their mythology is grouped around a chosen few, the Pharoahs, being the embodiment of gods on earth. They were given this distinction by the prior gods and basically given the reigns to the heavens, the rivers, the earth, and the afterlife. Kratos couldn't be truthfully seen as a God of War without that blessing from the prior gods who have long since given up their control. Sure, they could have messed with everything and forced him into the concept. (they did fudge some of the Greek mythos) But, I kinda like that they want to stay faithful to the basic premise. I also like how they have decided to make this one at a time where the Norse gods were still roaming the earth. It throws a bit of the unknown element into what is known of Norse mythology. (which is already a bit less documented than that of Egypt, Rome, or Greece)

I like the new setting, though an idea I had was to set it in Mayan or Aztec mythology. If they wanted to keep the same style, that would be a perfect setting as there are plenty of existing stories about mortals taking down the arrogant gods. Not only is it naturally a bloody mythology, and not only would it allow for all sorts of interesting enemies, but there's already a perfect story to be told (and played through). I'm talking about the hero twins of Hanahpu and Xabalanque (they'd have to work on the names) in the Popol Vuh. Now I won't go through to the details, and all you have to do is search, but it involves taking down multiple evil deities, travelling to the underworld via a bunch of challenge worlds, and killing stuff. It sounds stupid when I say it like that, but if you do the research, you'll find that there's a lot to be had there ...

South America is pretty damn far away from Greece, in both distance and aesthetics, also Aztec/mayans aren't as mainstream as Egypt and Norse mythology. I mean everybody knows Thor/Odin or even Anubis /Isis so I don't even think they considered it...

David Jaffe said in a interview several years ago that his idea for God of War 3 would have been to end Greek mythology at the beginning of the game and turn to other mythos like north and egyptian mythology. Today, it is absolutely the right move for Santa Monica to change the setting.

Egyptian mythology could be a possibility. Afterwards, maybe a stop in central America for their gods, who knows. Eventually, Kratos might run out of deities to go after...
