Nitrowolf2 ...I have a feeling when regarding sales to date, MS would be one of the last companies to leave countries out. Especially when you consider the fact that Sony mere hours before posted their numbers and they are that close.
If some were omitted they would have been corrected by now (how suspect would that be)

The sales gap is basically null.

And any rational person who considers how many 360's are re-buys will quickly come to the conclusion that Sony now has a bigger install base.

I think you might be on to something. I think to further justify your thesis look at how multi plats sell. You will notice even with the 360s large" install base they dont outsell the ps3 version meaning the install base might be smaller.

So what you have is about a 400,000 unit lead for the 360 which started at around 9 million when the PS3 hit in November 2006

No shutup, Sony reports sold numbers. And Major Nelson just gave us the sold numbers today for MS. The gap narrows. Drop the numbers of dead 360s MS won't disclose and it's a lot closer than anyone will admit.

And we already saw what happened with the software numbers.

Nitro, MS has been reporting shipped as sold. Major Nelson gave the sold number today. Sony reports sold units. Do the math. Less than 2 million. A gap that will close in 6 months. Who knows, Sony is in the black they may cut the PS3 price in February.

To be honest I really dont trust Sonys numbers, they are known for lying about such figures. On top of that, no one can check the numbers, we all are just supposed to take Sonys word for it, at least NPD checks M$ numbers. EU has no idea how many Sony has sold, and Sony just had NPD silenced on their numbers in the US so I certainly dont trust their numbers on their word alone.

Point being whether its shipped, sold or whatever wherever, the reported number from VG NPD is coming from in incorrect. You can't say MS sold 42 and are having 2 million shipped right now and have VG reporting on that as actually sold units, because they don't count shipped numbers.

People get so confused over this, very simple IMO, shipped/sold thing.

(A) The following are the same thing:
"# Shipped" == Sold by Manufacturer to Retailer== "sell-in"

(B) The following are the same thing:
"# Sold" == Sold by Retail to consumers == "sell-through"

The latter is confusing, because hardware is sold *twice* -- once to retail, and then again to consumers.

MS has 44+ million 360s in the (A) category above, according to their recent report. MS has over 42 million 360s in the (B) category at the moment, according to Major Nelson (who is nothing more than MS PR).

Sony has 41.6 million PS3s in the (A) category above, according to their latest report. We don't know the # in the (B) category, but its very likely close to 40 million, given that retail is in the process of stocking up for the holidays, and the number of PS3s in retail stock should be close to the number of 360s in stock at this juncture -- maybe a bit less, since PS3s are slightly larger on the shelf, and, on average, cost more than 360s, which tends to lower their stock numbers slightly.

The shipped/sell-in numbers (the (A) numbers) are the only reliable ones, and frankly, the sell-through (B) numbers usually differ by a very similar amount to the shipped (A) numbers.

If there are 44.2M sell-in 360s, and 42.2M sell-though 360s (2.0M in stock, which is not unreasonable before Black Friday), then if there are 41.6M sell-in PS3s, there are very likely 39.6 - 40.1M sell-through PS3s... a few less in stock than 360s.. but not much. The sell-through and sell-in differences are both well under 3M.

PS -- ignore VGChartz, they seem to believe their tiny, biased sampling is more accurate than the quarterly reports from the manufacturers themselves, and the standard practice of keeping things that are selling at about the same stock levels, at retail (go figure).

To reiterate what most people seem confused about...

Sony has indeed "sold" 41.6M PS3s, as of their quarterly report... to retailers, who are their consumer.

They don't use the confusing "internet definition" of hardware "sold", which can mean either "sold to retail" or "sold to consumers". They ALWAYS mean "sold to retail", because they DO NOT KNOW the exact number sold to consumers, by their retail customers -- they didn't do said selling, and aren't privy to all that info.

They don't hand out estimates as to how their product is doing in retail hands in these reports -- they report precise numbers to their stockholders, of business they have done directly. Retail, conveniently, doesn't tend to place orders for products that aren't selling... so the number "shipped"/"sold -in" (sold to retail) maintains a pretty steady margin over the number "sold"/"sold-th rough" (to consumers) at all times.

Sony has closed the gap on the 360 to under 3M, for certain, at this juncture, in consumer hands.

And now to add a bit of just plain old common sense ~ If the 360 has had issues with failures be it RROD, E03, E04, E05, E06, E07, E10, E12, E13,E18, E19, E20, E35, & E74 (to name a few) PLUS disc scratching ADDED to the amount of 360's banned over the years (couple hundred thousand in 2008 and up to a few million in 2009) ~

Wouldn't it be safe to say that there are quite a bit of NEW re-purchases in their "totals". Meaning that there aren't as many 360's in consumers hands as MS claims so the numbers between the 360 & PS3 are closer than they let on (even worse now)?

That was posted here a loooong time ago by me and not one single person has EVER proven me wrong. The only factor that additionally confuses people is that all 3 companies use "Sell In/Shipped" for their accessory totals. Which adds to the misinformation. So Kinect, PS Move, Wii MotionPlus etc throws people off because they are misinformed.

An article released by the Associated Press has indicated that Sony has now sold 10.5 million consoles worldwide. It was widely known that Sony had the goal of reaching 11 million consoles sold by the end of March. These latest figures have put Sony on track to probably surpass that 11 million console mark by the end of March.

One key factor to remember about these figures are that they do not count for consoles shipped. Sony has always had a strong belief and following of only counting actual consoles sold to their official numbers. This would indicate that Sony has therefore shipped well over 10.5 million consoles thus far.

So some random internet person says what you want to hear and it becomes fact... Not any kind of proof. I am sure the others are the same BS as well.

GT5 will put the PS3 over the 360. I think kinect will sale a lot of units but it won't be enough to stop the PS3 from over taken them. The next big game from M$ is Gears3 and that won't be out for awhile. Sony on the other hand has an abundance of top notch exclusives coming out.
