Ex- Concord Dev in Defense of Marathon & Against "Lack of Compassion" & "Vitriol" Attached to Games

One former Concord dev defends Marathon and discusses the "vitriol" people have toward games in a statement shared with MP1st.

Alos882d ago

Plenty of people are excited for Marathon- nobody was excited for Concord. That's the difference.

Kornholic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Not really. It's quite rare to see excitement for Marathon in comment sections. The only place where I've seen positive rhetoric for Marathon is the game's subreddit.

TOTSUKO2d ago

The marathon discord jumped up around 300k on reveal. Which is like what, triple of what concord sold lmao

HyperMoused2d ago

Didnt he call anyone who didnt like his game talentless losers..yeah...vitriol

coolbeans2d ago

Hold on! He may have been on the same team, but that wasn't this developer's words. The guy who made the "talentless freaks" comment was Xavier Farrell. I don't know if Stephan Williams shared the same attitude, but I think it's fair to not hold that over his head.

thorstein2d ago

He's not wrong. There are talented, great devs who made games then quit because of online vitriol from a tiny group of shitstirrers.

Wow, you hate a game you couldn't possibly have played yet. Or you hate a game that you couldn't possibly have played. How original.

Normal people (because you never hear from them) when they don't like a game, don't care and move on. They don't waste their time talking shit about it.

And the people who do just search for people they want to agree with their bias.

Lightning772d ago (Edited 2d ago )

"There are talented, great devs who made games then quit because of online vitriol from a tiny group of shitstirrers."

I dunno about Tiny group of ppl. Hell ppl online made it collectively known they didn't want Concord.

If you were speaking as early as last gen. Yeah you could say it was a handful of small ppl online that talk down on certain games but ultimately had no impact on the games sales. Look at Destiny IP. Ppl Talk so much crap about that game post launch and the game still sold like crazy. Same with 2. These days there's a collective whole of ppl who are trying to tear down games by using platforms and followers to do it. Grummz is a perfect example of someone who has been terrorizing the game industry with his rhetoric of "anti-wokeness" and he's been doing this most of this gen along with his retarded followers. Doesn't matter the game he'll go after it if it doesn't fit his agenda and world. he's hurt this industry with fake outrage that spreads like a disease. It's definitely not a tiny amount of ppl anymore it's annoying movement that's hurting this industry. If a game doesn't get announced perfectly 10 outta 10 the with no "agendas" then "fans" will destroy said game.

Eonjay1d 14h ago

Grummz is a scam artist and part of his thing is using anti-workness as a sheild to block out the criticism he has rightfully earned.

Rancegamerx1d 23h ago

What does compassion have to do with this? This person needs to realize he’s not living in some fantasy world. This is the real world, and he was involved in a massive failure. No one is obligated to offer compassion for failure just to make others feel better about themselves. The so-called vitriol comes from deeply frustrated people who are tired of the industry producing low-quality content and then blaming gamers instead of the creators. It’s ridiculous.

If the reveal of Marathon has left you a bit perplexed about its setting, the cinematic released today may help explain it in simpler terms.

I still don't understand whose decision it was to make a F2P game that is not F2P. The Streamers will farm it for content after this the game will have way below average numbers.

SlothLordPootus2d ago

I dont think the game inherently should be free to play, but maybe would suit it better. Lots of extraction shooters aren't. I know it's not the norm in terms of mutiplayer games anymore with Fortnite, Warzone, Apex, overwatch, etc.

anast2d ago

"but maybe would suit it better. "

exactly

badz1493d ago

When Sony bought Bungie, I was secretly hoping that they would produce something magical like Halo for the PS consoles. an LS extraction shooter was not I had in mind

Ninver2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That was my exact expectation of Bungie. Disappointed is an understatement.

rudero2d ago

The game has been in production since 2018 and almost tanked Bungie financially before Sony stepped in…

They were not going to scrap the game and Sony did not dictate the game to bungie.

The_Blue2d ago

a quick check, but no disrespect, but let me say this.

Marathon Might Be the Game That Finally Brings Extraction Shooters Into the Mainstream

TNS: Bungie hosted a gameplay reveal for Marathon, and it looks like this might be the extraction shooter that takes the genre mainstream.

Such a beautiful art style wasted on some GAAS shill 😞

S2Killinit5d ago

How do you know it wont be a great game like Helldivers?

S2Killinit4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The alt accounts disagree with me but seems they can’t tell me why.

Notellin2d ago

N4G is a pathetic cesspool of neck beards. They barely represent but a tiny fraction of the gaming community.

Relientk777d ago

Do you actually believe that, like truly believe that? Lol

Do you remember Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction? I don't think even Ubisoft remembers it.

Nitrowolf26d ago

I feel like your joking about rainbow six extraction, cause that WAS NOT an extraction shooter

Profchaos5d ago

I think he's talking about the unreleased project they canned in development

Cacabunga6d ago

Remember Dead Space Extraction on Wii?
Well still not extraction shooter. Do you even know what you are writing?

goken6d ago

About Ubisoft not remembering about Rainbow Six…
I don’t know… there is a possibility that they are secretly working on something to make it their latest endeavour for DEI

“To call this game a failure before it’s even out is wild to me” -a former Firewalk dev

"I commend them for taking a chance."

Kaii8d ago

Title should've said *Concord Dev
The game that cost $400m & Sony wanted you to pay for it & was live service, hero shooters are one thing which was copied from OW but I really*3 can't see players enjoying extraction shooters where once ya dead you've lost your entire loadout, it's a very different steaks type of game.

1nsomniac6d ago

It works for Delta Force and it’s actually a far better experience for it. Makes the game actually mean something, like games used to make you feel back in the day. Makes the battles more intense.

Notellin6d ago

I'll take a ribeye for my steak, please.

Michiel19896d ago (Edited 6d ago )

you're dead wrong. in moba's you lose your whole loadout after every game, in dayz, tarkov and in roguelikes no one has an issue with it.. Sure it might not be your cup of tea, but stop acting like it doesn't work in any game. So many games have a mechanic that you need to start from scratch each death or new game and it works totally fine.

oh yeah not to mention fortnite, one of the most popular games on the planet, played by millions each day.

S2Killinit6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Yep. As long as its fun why complain. Helldivers was a perfect example.

porkChop6d ago

Helldivers 2 isn't an extraction shooter though. You extract, yeah, but it's missing some key things. There's no pvp/pvpve, and when you die you don't lose your stratagems or your equipment or your upgrades. It doesn't have the high risk/high reward element that extraction shooters are known for.

-Foxtrot8d ago

Is this guy for real?

"I commend them for taking a chance, trying something foreign to them"

It isn't that foreign, it's a first person live service online shooter which is exactly what Destiny was, the only difference is that it's an extraction based game.

"But to call this game a failure before it’s even out is wild to me."

Or maybe we've had 10, if not more, years of this kind of s**t were we start to see a pattern. Why risk giving them your hard earned money especially in this kind of economy when you have a gut wrenching feeling how it's going to turn out.

Bungie could have revived Marathon and made a remake of the original or a Doom 2016 styled sequel but they instead chose to do more live service slop.

S2Killinit6d ago

Are there any successful extraction multiplayer games?

shadowfax336d ago

Escape From Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown 1896

abstractel6d ago

Add Helldivers 2 and Warzone to @Shadowfax33's list. Delta Force is doing well as well. They aren't my cup of tea but plenty of people do like them and I'll play them with friends who like them more than me. Out of the bunch I've probably enjoyed Helldivers 2 the most.

abstractel6d ago

He's not saying you should buy it, he's saying you shouldn't judge a game based on first trailers. I dislike when people shit on a game before it comes out. Once it's out and it's in the hands of reviewers and other content creators and you can see that you won't like it, then go for judging it if you feel the need to. Like this guy, I just don't see the point in shitting on a game prematurely.

bionicstar6d ago

Games are judged based on trailers all the time. E3 was the perfect example of gamers judgement, games were judged based solely on trailers and gameplay.

-Foxtrot6d ago

There’s been a lot of trailers I’ve seen that I’ve thought “this is going to be bad” and 9 times out of 10 they are

There’s literally one game this entire generation which I thought was going to be terrible from the first trailer but turned out good and that was Silent Hill 2.

You can judge from the first trailer if you know how it’s most likely going to go. We all act like we’ve never seen this kind of stuff before and yet we have, dozens of times.

If games were not meant to be judged first impression wise from trailers then what’s the point of them.

I just find it funny if a games trailer looks great it’s acceptable to state it but for some reason saying it’s bad is frowned upon.

Michiel19896d ago

90% on here automatically says a game, dev and publisher sucks if they don't make a single player game. It's honestly just so petty. It's really starting to become a bitter boomer fest over here, not your type of game? bad! Not singleplayer? Bad! everything is bad except if the game is specifically tailored to their taste. It's just an echochamber at this point.

DefenderOfDoom26d ago

When I first heard there was a new Marathon game , I thought like many other people that Marathon game was going to be a single player campaign. But my excitement went away once I found out Marathon is a extraction multi-player game .

Goodguy018d ago

I don't care about small studios trend chasing but when well established studios like bungie try their hand at it, it usually just ends up biting them back in the end. Trend chase games should only be small projects, you ain't going to trample the top dog for very long until there are good signs of it going downhill like overwatch, marvel rivals found a perfect time to release their game but it's not going to work 9/10 times.

Yui_Suzumiya6d ago

I'm concerned about Marathon as well. It would be one thing if they at least had a campaign attached to it.

Noskypeno6d ago

It would be like uncharted being rebooted in 10 years and being turned exclusively into a battle royale. Cool if it's just a side mode, but where's the story mode, the thing that put it on the map. Really should have looked at what id was doing and took inspiration from it.

SimpleDad7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It only shows that this developer has no idea why his game Concord failed, and that's WILD to me.
