Hideo Kojima: "When I Started My Own Company, I Was Opposed By Everyone"

Hideo Kojima stated that everyone was against him when he decided to go independent following the split with Konami.

As far as I understand it, Sony game him an engine then helped fund Death Stranding including publishing it, while even letting him keep the rights to the game. Heck the time in between him leaving Konami and starting on Death Stranding were pretty much straight from one into the other, he left Konami fully in July then was working on DS in a new studio by December.

So uh I dunno how accurate this statement comes across.

I have to agree with you. Unless kojima means that konami opposed him then i get that. But if he's sour with Sony for giving him an engine but requiring an exclusive for it then thems the breaks kojima nobody is going to give you an engine completely free for nothing. in fact i couldn't help but think everyone besides konami was on his side the whole time. I doubt sony would give away an engine to just any studio because i never hear about that happening on sony's side tbf. He got special treatment if anything.

EDIT: Also, if he means everyone opposed him when he made Death Stranding, then i can't agree with him either. He made a very polarizing video game that maybe some diehard xbox fans wanted to deride but he still had very love it or hate it gameplay along with all his cooky cutscenes. So that's just how it goes. It wasn't anyone opposing him or anything. If he'd played it safe and made an action adventure game with gameplay that everyone enjoys for a broad audience he would have found great reviews licking his boots but it was his decision to make something a little more out there.

Einhander1972130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

They didn't even keep it exclusive though, (a mistake if you ask me) he was allowed to publish it on other platforms.

Extremely special treatment.

babadivad129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

How would keeping it exclusive benefit the game.

I personally don't condone the way konami treated him during the time he was quitting with the working conditions shennanigans. So i don't really think he deserved it. The only thing i can think he did super wrong was go overboard on the budget but that's what any director can do it's not necessarily a terrible thing. I respect kojima for his contribution to the video game industry. Also if his games didn't turn a profit then yeah he shouldn't be going overboard on the budget but his games do sell so they should have given him some leeway. On the flip side konami is beholden to their investors a few measlly millions in profit isn't what they're after I get that but that's more of a greediness issue than squarely putting the blame on kojima imo

KwietStorm_BLM129d ago

The statement comes directly from Kojima, so maybe question your understanding of it too, wherever you got your information from.

You have no idea how Konami had to treat this diva-special/delicate little boy. Jezus.... wtf? Feel bad how they treated him? Konami had their own issues, but they had to feed this monster for years and towards the end of that relationship he was taking liberties with Konami's assets that were.... pretty fing lame, althought he may have felt entitled to, being the diva he is.

He basically skimmed off the side to get where he is. So yeah, he was/is kinda opposed, but he also needed to go and fund his own ass/projects. More people were very supportive over him going indie. Me too, and then he did Death Stranding....

Shiore2u129d ago

I agree as far as him being a narcissist. A quality of his that hasn't improved with everyone kissing his feet seemingly just because it's become trendy to do so.

BrainSyphoned129d ago

Funny, I remember everyone in the industry forming a train on their knees to worship his greatness.

babadivad129d ago

They still are. I never understood why people loved sniffing his farts so much.

derek129d ago

Kojima comes off as having a pretty inflated opinion of himself if this is accurate. He had alot of help in starting his own studio so opposition to your decision to go solo was certainly not unanimous. Being appreciative of the help you get from others is sign of humility.

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.
"I'm sure I deserve a lot of criticism, but I don't think my team or companies deserve all the criticism. I could take a lot of that blame myself. But ultimately I need to believe in the mission," he said.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss7d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg4d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast6d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.
