DF Weekly: Do we actually need The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn remasters?

With the details we now have in terms of features and pricing, I don't think there are any significant concerns remaining - just that perhaps that the term 'remastered' in the title is a little misplaced. Essentially, what we're dealing with here is broadly equivalent to a release along the lines of Death Stranding: Director's Cut. It's the original game with a dash of extra content and additional visual modes that tap into the power of PlayStation 5.

Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance, Puppeteer, Jak and Daxter etc are all better choices

Even a full on remake of Drakes Fortune I’d take

PrinceOfAnger149d ago

killzone 2/3 definitely a better choice, i have recently finished the games on pc and thought about that, a full remake like demon souls is even better

darthv72148d ago

2&3 are still fine... I'd take the first one as a full remake before the others. They could flesh out more of the backstory that the sequels touch on. Even go deeper into the lore of Helgan.

specialguest148d ago

KZ 2/3 would be amazing. KZ 2 was a graphical masterpiece back then. With today's modern tech, all of those tricks Guerilla Games did to create the effects like the lighting, storm effects, etc, they could now be done in real-time and more realistic

Cacabunga147d ago

Killzone 2-3
Golden Abyss remake
Infamous 2

RaidenBlack148d ago

Uncharted 1 still got a decent remaster for 8th gen ... a remake is not that much of a requirement ...
instead remake candidates should be from 5th or 6th gen
and as for proper remasters (not just lazy res upscale): Killzone 2 & 3 obviously and also Resistance/inFamous (as well as MGS4 :P)

-Foxtrot148d ago

My point with the list is that I’d rather see those titles than what we are getting…titles which are only 3-5 years old and still hold up today

CrashMania148d ago

Sony own the Demons Souls and Bloodborne IP, I wish they'd do something with Bloodborne at the very least.

vfl523148d ago

The way you worded that makes me think you don't realize they already remade demon souls

148d ago
GamingSinceForever148d ago

Not one of those will sell more copies than TLOU2 Remaster. The sooner we realize that these gaming sites and their followers are less than 1% of the buying public the better off we’ll be.

Sure we prefer newer titles but this is business and a business is what Sony is running.

JackBNimble148d ago

Don't you think they could be doing something better with their time and money, like maybe making something new? Or have they become lazy and just reliving the past with the same old games over and over.

Gez ... do something fresh and new already .

notachance148d ago

I'd rather for them to go Square Enix route and remake/remaster their PS1 libraries instead of these unnecessary remaster

come on, legend of dragoon..

Gamingsince1981148d ago

What's with the "need" anyway ? This is video games, no one needs them at all, we need water , we need air, we don't need games.

Barlos148d ago

I would love a remake/remaster of KZ1. For its time it really pushed the PS2 hard and because of that it had a few issues. This is begging to be given the Bluepoint touch and brought up to date. I'd love to see an updated Killzone trilogy collection for sure.

Yi-Long148d ago

Sony killed the game and the studio behind it, but a Remaster of the excellent Driveclub would absolutely be my favorite release if it happened. Just a delicious racing game.

FinalFantasyFanatic147d ago (Edited 147d ago )

So many better choices, I can't fathom why reasonably recent games are getting picked over Classics that are more deserving.

Well I want a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster especially if it's an upgrade to Forbidden West Graphics and Animation.

Duke19148d ago

Nope. But HD remasters are an easy cash grab that the masses shovel cash for because while they complain about remakes, they still buy them

PRIMORDUS148d ago

Not if they release on a platform that never received the original in the first place like PC.

46player148d ago

No complaint here, I want the updated graphics.

Ra3030148d ago

My thoughts on this is do we need Richard Leadbetter's or Digital Foundry's opinion on anything........ever? I know I don't they do nothing for me and never have.

specialguest148d ago

You may not, but tons of people do since the video has 4,700 Likes to 112 Dislikes

Chocoburger148d ago

That guy is a buffoon, DF Direct is the best gaming podcast around. I look forward to it every week.

BehindTheRows147d ago

By that same token, some may not NEED remasters, while others may/do.

Amplitude148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

DF videos are typically absolutely amazing game reviews first and foremost. They have great intros, explain the mechanics well, tell you if they enjoyed it or not (I usually vibe well with John's games personally), and then they have the best tech breakdowns of a game's performance which is very very important to me. I want to know what settings to run at on PC, and on PS5 I wanna know if the 60fps mode runs well or not because if it doesn't... well I'll just get it on PC (If it isn't completely broken there too). DF Retro is also always unbelievably interesting and super well edited and inspired my YouTube channel which just crossed 1200 subs (wooo!). They helped me a lot with understanding game development and got me interested in goofing around with game engines and PC building in general back in the day.

I don't mean any offence by this but you sound like somebody who skims their analysis videos, selectively scrolls to the stats, says "who cares?", and then closes it. Or possibly somebody who watches (stolen) cut clips on TikTok? Even if you are somehow unaffected by blurry images and fluctuating frame rates (some people are and I envy you) I recommend watching a full DF episode one day. They're extremely interesting and I watch literally all of them even if I have no interest in the game.

Sony saves PS5 owners $50 with The Last of Us 2 Remaster gesture

Naughty Dog and Sony are doing something unheard of, and that’s giving you a wad of cash back for pre-ordering The Last of Us 2 Remaster on PS5.

FlavorLav0198d ago

Agreed. $10 for a 120fps mode and all new survival mode is a great value for existing owners. And I haven’t played this game since my PS4 pro days, so that’s a no brainer for me.

toxic-inferno98d ago

I've only just finished the game on PS4 (bought it in 2021 for £10). Enjoyed the game so much, and it's incredible to think I can now get the remaster and extra content - while still having only paid half the launch cost of the remaster!

Say what you want about the remaster being unnecessary, but this is some serious generosity that is rarely seen in the industry these days.

Cacabunga98d ago

I didn’t like the game, but this is def good offer

seanpitt2398d ago

Well let's be honest it didn't need a remaster obviously! That's why the graphics are the exact same! They could of gave the extra content for free like Santa Monica did with the god of war DLC as a sorry for letting everyone down with the balls up of MP factions!

toxic-inferno98d ago

They didn't let everyone down. I was actually relieved to hear they'd cancelled the game. Leave ND to do what they do best. Multiplayer games require a huge amount of resources to produce and continue to support. I'd rather them use those resources to make new single player experiences.

Hopefully this will have freed them up to release games more regularly.

anast97d ago

TOP's comments are a series of stupid takes.

Nobody wanted TLoU 2: fortnight edition. The graphics are not the same. ND is selling work, they shouldn't be forced to give their work out for free.

GamerRN98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

I mean, they didn't add or change a whole lot, so $10 is a nice little cash grab also...

That being said, I haven't played TLOU2 yet so I'll probably grab it if it runs well

isarai92d ago

Literally added 3 new levels, a entirely new game mode, a library of skins and new playable characters, as well as update visuals, admittedly very minimal updates, but still it's some sprinkles on top of all the other stuff added.

GamerRN91d ago

They didn't add 3 new levels, they included unfinished cut content... Big difference

Shikoku98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

10$ to "upgrade" it is better than wanting full price but honestly it's not a big enough change and the game just wasn't as good as the first.

lucian22998d ago

combat was way better than the first's, just cuz you're mad at the story doesnt make the gameplay bad lol

InUrFoxHole98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

He didn't say the gameplay was bad but who sits through a crappy story in a single player game just because the gameplay is smooth?

DarXyde98d ago

InUrFoxHole,

Is that a serious question?

You don't think it's worth playing a game with a bad story if the gameplay is great?

That's interesting, but there implication here is that TLOU 2 has a "crappy story", am I right? Completely disagree with that. You can say it wasn't as good as the first, but a crappy story? I'm what way?

badz14998d ago

@InUrFoxHole

"who sits through a crappy story in a single player game just because the gameplay is smooth?"

err...Nintendo gamers. hello...

Extermin8or3_98d ago

@InUrFoxHole um what? Crappy story? There may be decisions made by the writers, aspects of the story that you don't like (I know I certainly don't) a particular aspect of thebplot that you may even feel amounts to bad writing in many ways. But that does not mean the plot ie crap. Infact it can still be exceptional and compared to everything else an absolute masterpiece in spite of its flaws.

mkis00798d ago

If their is a cool gameplay mechanic i will for sure sit through a lesser story. In tlou2 case, the guns, blood, and hit reactions are just so cathartic. 👌

Tell me you never dicked around in gta just shooting and running over people.

@ScotlandYard
No, we played the same game. You just happened to like a scrappy story. It's poorly written and makes you play as a character I didn't want to play as. Calling part2 a masterpiece is a joke if you ask me. Part 1 is a masterpiece not TLOU2

Sharky23198d ago

The No Return mode is worth 10$ alone.

TheEnigma31398d ago

$10 bucks for no return, I can dig it.

1nsomniac98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

Haha “as a gesture of goodwill we are providing a refund”.

No. They publicly announced if you owned the previous game they would charge £10 for the new version. Then they opened the game up to pre-orders but allowed no option for which version of the purchase you were making. Making themselves wide open for legal action against them.

What they’re doing is abiding by the law because they messed up. The nerve of these companies trying to portray themselves as the saviour of the situation. Then there’s the complete naive stupidity of you lot! I don’t know which is worse.

ModsDoBetter98d ago

True - this is the bare minimum and should be expected of these companies but Sony is trying to make out like they're the best thing since sliced bread for not ripping off their customers.

Extermin8or3_98d ago

Sony isn't making out anything. They are just saying "here is your money back". It's the public saying it'd a great thing because people recognise that they were not legally obliged todo anything.

ModsDoBetter97d ago

"Sony isn't making out anything. They are just saying "here is your money back". It's the public saying it'd a great thing because people recognise that they were not legally obliged todo anything."

"As a gesture of goodwill we are providing a refund"

Hmmm

Extermin8or3_98d ago

There was no legal action that could successfully be taken against them. They announced that if you owned the ps4 version at LAUNCH there would be an upgrade path. They then listed the game for preorder on the store. If you went through and purchased it then you knowingly agreed to the higher price (it's what is known as an offer by a seller, accepting it is the same as agreeing to a contract for sale). By going through, clicking purchase and putting in your psn password etc you are knowingly accepting the price displayed. So after that sony isn't obliged to refund you anything. That they are offering people who already had it, that money back is therefore a gesture of goodwill. The literal definition of a gesture of goodwill is something that you legally did not have todo. Now wether or not morally, it's a given they should do what they have done is a separate matter. The point is they did not have to.

1nsomniac97d ago

You quite clearly have never been involved in a legal dispute. Also clearly a very naive human being. I wish you well in life.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, keep your Trophies when you switch to the PS5 version

If you have already unlocked Trophies in the PS4 version of The Last of Us Part 2, there is good news. You will not lose them if you upgrade to the remastered edition for PS5 including the platinum.

rippermcrip102d ago

What a pointless article. Who thought you would "lose them"? That has never happened.

Anyone who cares about trophies would rather be able to gain them a 2nd time, which is what the common practice is in this situation.

CrimsonWing69102d ago

I don’t think they were alluding to you “losing” your trophies, but rather they’re saying the trophy progress you earned transfers over to the Remaster.

This wasn’t the case with the initial PS4 Remaster (not to be confused with the PS5 Remake). Not all games do this, either. I care about trophies, but don’t necessarily want to sink my time into getting them all over again, so for me this is a positive.

rippermcrip101d ago

"I care about trophies, but don’t necessarily want to sink my time into getting them all over again, so for me this is a positive." - then just don't? It doesn't harm you.

Why would you be against being able to earn them again?

I_am_Batman101d ago

Sony should've just made it so that both games point to the same trophy entries on their server. It's kinda stupid that you basically get a second platinum trophy for free. Not that the competative aspect of trophy hunting is worth much anyway, when there are shovelware games specifically designed to give you an easy platinum in the least amount of time possible.

It's also strange to me that Sony still hasn't implemented a way to reset your trophies for a specific game in case you want to earn them again without needing to create another account. Not to mention that it would also give us a way to get rid of single digit percentage entries we aren't planning to play again. They just end up cluttering the trophy list.

Rhythmattic101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

@riipper
Kevin Butler at the now evaporated E3 said it bes....

Rhythmattic101d ago

“Staying up until 3am to earn a trophy that isn’t real..............But is"

CrimsonWing69101d ago

@rippermcrip

“Why would you be against being able to earn them again?“

Like I said, I don’t necessarily want to put all that “time” into doing it all over again after already accomplishing it in the previous version.

I mean, I’ll do it if that’s just what has to be done since I’m an OCD Completionist, but I don’t necessarily want to put a massive amount of hours into something I’ve already done.

I just want to enjoy the new content, play through the updated version of the game, and earn any “new” trophies.

rippermcrip101d ago

So Sony shouldn't do that because you have OCD? Not exactly a fair argument.

CrimsonWing69101d ago

@rippermcrip

“So Sony shouldn't do that because you have OCD? Not exactly a fair argument.”

Help me out here… you literally asked me why I wouldn’t want to get all the trophies over again, to which I responded because I don’t want to sink the amount of time into unlocking all the trophies for the second time, but if Sony didn’t unlock them that I would still unlock the trophies again because I’m an OCD completionist.

At what point is there an “unfair” argument in my response to you?

Is it the fact that I like Sony is allowing the trophies to be unlocked IF (“if” being the keyword here) you’ve already unlocked them before?

I’m so confused from whatever you’re going on about…
