MLB The Show 21 PS5 And Xbox Box Art Leaked, Confirming Game Will Go Multiplatform This Year

From PSU: "The MLB The Show 21 PS5 box art has been leaked by ANerdyDad on Instagram, who is a reliable leaker, revealing other box art for games in the past.

The box art stars Fernando Tatis Jr. from the San Diego Padres and takes the approach for a more grungy arty look, compared to the cinematic covers we have seen in the past. On top of the PS5 Box Art, we also get a look at the Xbox version of the cover, which will feature the San Diego Studio logo and the PlayStation Studios logo."

Wow - this has been known for AGES! Get with the program psu.com lol

Jin_Sakai1216d ago

Exactly. Sony had to go multiplatform with the game or lose the MLB license.

mkis0071215d ago

This is just what everyone is guessing. There is no confirmation of this.

Jin_Sakai1215d ago

“This is just what everyone is guessing. There is no confirmation of this.”

Sounds to me like the extended partnership required going multiplatform.

“MLB, MLBPA, Sony extend video game partnership”

“In addition, the historic expansion of the long-standing partnerships will bring MLB The Show, for the first time ever, to additional console platforms beyond PlayStation platforms as early as 2021. Complete details will be announced at a later date.“

$70 dollars, they can keep it. Microsoft gaming division will be looking to see how many of its fans will buy so they can charge that too. Sony doing that wanting Microsoft to do that so its fans won't be standing idly around looking stupid. A baseball game, really?

agnosticgamer1214d ago

@Jin_Sakai

Doubt that had anything to do with it at all unless you have a link to prove otherwise. Sports titles only have a limited fanbase so they need to increase the number of fans it's available to. They needed to increase the profits. 3rd parties could have made a licensed baseball game for all consoles and the only baseball game made was the crappy RBI series. So to increase sales it's a no brainer to extend this to other systems to maximize profits where no competing game is out for.

ShadowWolf7121214d ago

@agnosticgamer While MLB hasn't gone the route of the NFL and given away EXCLUSIVE licensing for their league's sport... MLB The Show IS the only "official" game sanctioned by MLB and allowed to carry their name in the title. It's the BRANDED MLB game. Sony could, in theory, keep making baseball games had they lost the license, just call it "The Show" and drop the MLB, but they would also lose the sweet cross-promotion and perks that license deal came with.

The fact that the multiplatform announcement came the same day and the announcement that the new deal was inked VERY heavily implies that it was indeed part of the deal. Especially since The Show is actually a huge seller on the PS platform and they were making a lot of bank from their own ecosystem alone.

It was already confirmed it was going multiplat ages ago and I'm kind of glad this one is. I don't play this game, but Baseball is a much loved sport.

Kind of strange in a way to see the Playstation Studios logo on an Xbox cover lol.

SullysCigar1216d ago

"I don't play this game, but Baseball is a much loved sport."

Same, the more, the merrier.

crazyCoconuts1216d ago

Would be funny if they had the whole Playstation Studios intro play at the booting of the game, with the montage of games they show in there.

DJStotty1215d ago

Seeing as though san diego studios are the developers, i would be shocked if they did not play the dev/publishers logo at the start.

agnosticgamer1214d ago

@CrazyCoconuts

I don't know I'm not much of a Minecraft Dungeons fan but I am sure that plays the Xbox Game Studios intro when playing on Playstation and Nintendo Switch. It's not like it's a "burn" why change the intro per different console it's on?

Sitdown1215d ago

So we have knew the exact year it was going multi, as well as the cover art?

potatoseal1215d ago

Yes we knew the exact year and no, obviously we had no idea what the cover-art was going to be. Use your head.

Sitdown1213d ago

We did not know the exact year, the press release said "as early as". And since we didn't know the cover art, this article is appropriate.

DJStotty1215d ago

"Kind of strange in a way to see the Playstation Studios logo on an Xbox cover lol."

Just the same as seeing Mojang on the PS4 Minecraft cover ain't it?

potatoseal1215d ago

No. LOL. It's nowhere near the same hahaha

DJStotty1215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

Why is it not the same?

Mojang is a studio of Microsoft (Xbox Game Studios), with their logo on the box
San diego studios/Playstation studios are studios of Sony (SIE), with their logo on the box (PlayStation Studios is a newly formed umbrella brand for its 1st party titles)

sounds the same to me.

SonyStyled1214d ago (Edited 1214d ago )

@ DJStotty, Depends on how one looks at it. I mean Minecraft was already multiplatform before the MS purchase Mojang, so my hard copy like many others doesn’t display the Xbox game studios logo on the box art, but I haven’t booted the game up in ages so for all I know the boot up screen of Minecraft could now show the Xbox logo on startup via game patch update.
But for MLB, this is flat out a PlayStation first part studio developing and PS publishing a game at launch on Xbox, which would be a first for both Xbox and PS studios with multiplatform development and publishing.
I think that’s what to OP was getting at

sadly going third party on this new generation of consoles, the Xbox S will affect all other versions due to its low specs and parity , this is going to be a nuisance for all third party games and for the developers, not to mention Xbox exclusive will be affected as well if they have any of course.

crazyCoconuts1215d ago

Yes, they will have to change to game to softball to make it run on the Xbox platforms

Sonyslave31215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

What about the ps4 lol it weaker then xbox series s 😄

spicelicka1215d ago

As if MLB: The Show every pushed graphics to their extreme lol. That major difference is that Series S won't support 4k native and in some cases may have a lower frame rate. How do you think PC games scale for top of the line and medium hardware? It remains to be seen of course but there sure isn't any proof of what you're saying. Why would they manufacture a Series X if they expect to hold back games?

https://www.theverge.com/20...

--Onilink--1215d ago (Edited 1215d ago )

Yeah, its not like 3rd party devs ever had to develop for PCs with even lower requirements than whats on the Series S....

I dont get this whole nonsense scenario of treating it like its something new, practically every 3rd Party dev releases on PC which means they already had to scale a lot, MS devs also release everything on PC so it also applies to them.

NeoGamer2321215d ago

That is kind of dumb.

There is always a lower performing console. Whether it be PS4 outperforming XBO or whatever.

If it isn't the fastest console then it is holding the fastest console back.

Neonridr1215d ago

It'll be weird to see this game on Xbox.

TheColbertinator1215d ago

I welcome it. For years we didn't have a decent baseball game on the Xbox and if anything The Show does so many things right for baseball simulation.

Neonridr1214d ago

oh don't get me wrong, I don't mind. Heck it's more people to enjoy the game. Xbox does well in North America where Baseball is very popular. This gives them a game to own for sure.

PlayStation471215d ago

Hey now Microsoft Xbox has finally got some quality exclusive. I’ll take this a step further. This game will be on store shelves, probably by the end of March. This will make currently xbox best exclusive game that’s out for Xbox series X.

Sunny_D1215d ago

"quality exclusive"

You know this game is multiplatform right?
