Well in fairness, while smart delivery is nothing new, MS didn't invent it, but Xbox is helping to push the concept. Publishers aren't going to do it on Xbox and leave PlayStation out in the cold. Imagine the backlash on that.

This is 100% a publisher decision, and what's more Microsoft is copying Sony's cross buy which has existed for two generations. And let's not forget that PS4 was the first to announce free upgrades from PS4 to Pro so it was pretty clear they already had that type of thing in mind.

What's sad is the way Microsoft tried to frame Smart Delivery like Sony wouldn't have free upgrades.

no...we should condemn the foolery when we see it. Trying to use this as ammo for the console wars isn't the way...period. We all know it is up to devs to utilize it...however, it takes on more steam when the platform holder sets the expectation for its own userbase, which in turn causes more 3rd parties to jump on board. If Microsoft or Sony didnt come out and set that expectation that they will do it for all their own first party games then why would others??? You are taking something that is positive and trying to turn it into a negative just to score points. Their is nothing negative about this though...we should be celebrating when ANY studio does a free upgrade as a base business model to show other devs that might be on the fence that its looked at as favorable...thats how the industry moves forward. Microsoft's Smart delivery is much more consumer friendly than Sony's decision to segment the market forcing you to buy all games again on your PS5 unless the publisher offers a free upgrade. Yeah...real nice.

It's basically a universal approach now if a third party devs offers a free upgrade on one console and not another people just won't buy it.on the platform.

Eg if I couldn't get watch dogs legion on ps4 with a free upgrade if just wait for the ps5 and end up buying it at a lower price point on a sale so offering the ps4 and 5 edition at the same time means I'm buying it day one

Why do people not get this? "Smart Delivery" is a marketing term. It is up to every publisher whether they do something like that. For instance Ubisoft and CDPR seem to be fully onboard. Meanwhile EA is upgrading games also, but they're doing it their own way. Since it is a publisher choice it would make no sense for any multi-platform game to offer Smart Delivery on Xbox and not do the exact same thing on PS5.

They started with First party's Smart Delivery and publicly said this should be the way to go, exposing other developers. Now more and more devs are joining it... they don't want to look consumer unfriendly.

On the other hand, Sony explicitly said "it's up to the developers", without even suggesting it should be any different than before. They haven't even confirmed this for their own exclusives!

Let's face it. If it wasn't for Microsoft, we would be paying for next gen versions all over again.

As for other publishers, indeed, it's on their own. So, it's safe to say that, on your Logic, EA, Ubisoft and other developers "widely known for being consumer friendly for decades" (/s) would've provided Smart Delivery or Free Upgrades on their own if there wasn't any pressure from a console maker (and as a result... the community). I don't think anyone would actually buy that.

It doesn't matter how it's called... but it does matter who promoted this to start with and that's a benefit for most console gamers (PS+Xbox).

i still remember the upgrade path from ps1-4:
ps1-2 all disc worked and didant cost extra
ps2-3 all disc work but only if you have the 60gb ps3 to play ps2 games
ps3-4 they wanted you to pay more money for the upgraded ver of the game disc & download if i remember right

and ps4-5 free to upgrade games but not much info for now i rely hope we get more info on this in July or August BUT so far sounds like its going well

Basically. I've had Xbox fan boys say the most insane things and believe their right anyways. If you get too many of them in the same room like I did they will tell you they have halo, uncharted and God of War as Xbox exclusives and they all believe it too.

I'm reminded of this time where I said, "Hey, that sounds like cross buy", and was told, "Well, kind of, but it's better", but couldn't explain why it was better in a way that wasn't still being done with cross buy, except that Sony apparently wasn't offering cross buy on their games despite the fact those games weren't on multiple platforms anyways.

Then I'm reminded of when I was told, "But you get upgrades for free to newer systems", so I said, "You mean like the mid gens do now?", and I was told, "No, this is different, you get another version automatically upgraded for a different piece of hardware.", and I said, "You mean like the mid gens do now?", and they said, "Stop being a hypocrite you Sony pony".

Then I'm reminded of how this same back and forth continued on with the same people over and over again on multiple articles, as if no one had ever had the conversation before, and as if it was somehow entirely new and impressive and the hype for it was just as amazing as the mega bomb that was MS announcement of their PR term for the same things we've had for quite some time now. It makes me think that the average forum going gamer has the memory retention of a mentally handicapped goldfish. The same people who can understand complex marketing or hardware/software paradigms, yet seem confused over the most simple of things.

Man....those were good times. Maybe in a few years we can move on, and not pretend that Sony hasn't had these things for years, or maybe this will be like the PS3 launch price which somehow was always $600 instead of there also being a $500 version, or Sony being misquoted to this day despite copious explanations about 2nd jobs.
