Deep Rock Galactic on Next-Gen Would Be Limited by the Lower Specs of Current Gen, Says Developer

Deep Rock Galactic might eventually make it to next-gen, the developers have said, but it would be limited by the lower specs of current-gen. It might have some additional visual effects such as ray tracing, though.

There's no hope for the Nintendo Switch, however, due to the console's limited RAM.

...So why not just release it on next-gen?

Imp0ssibl31445d ago

Because it's already out on one platform...And anyway you don't ditch dozens of millions of players just like that as an indie.

JEECE1445d ago

Although it's actually a pretty good idea to do just that IF you can get out early on new systems. Right now indies regularly get lost on PS4/XONE because there are so many games out there. But if an indie studio released a next gen only game right around launch when the most enthusiastic people are looking for content actually optimized for those systems, they could really get attention in a way they won't at any other time.

Gaming1011445d ago

When someone buys something next gen and is looking for something to play, it's going to be difficult this time around to convince people to buy your indie game. Usually people have nothing to play and will buy anything at launch, thus the high success of mediocre launch titles. However, backwards compatibility is being pushed so hard this time around, people will not be game starved as previous generations.

Additionally, indie devs won't be able to make something on par with AAA games of previous generations. You're not going to get something explosive like a Red Dead Redemption with amazing graphics and massive world. You're going to get smaller games, and the better gameplay ones will stand out more, which will suit them better to current gen consoles.

Not surprising, the Switch can't handle a lot games

Tross1445d ago

This dev is saying the PS4 and XB1 can't handle this game either.

agnosticgamer1445d ago

@Tross No they not saying X1 or PS4 couldn't handle the game... They are saying Next-Gen (systems) would be held back due to the game appearing on current-gen (X1 and PS4) systems and supporting Cross-play.

"The bad news, at least from a prospective next-gen owner point of view, is that the studio would be looking to make Deep Rock Galactic cross-play with current-generation (Xbox One and PlayStation 4), and as a result, their aging hardware specs would indirectly limit the next-gen versions as well, making it essentially the same game other than potential visual fidelity enhancements such as ray tracing."...

Idk man some people said that wouldn't happen butttt here we are.

JEECE1445d ago

They forgot to say "scalability."

I smell bullshit. If an indie game is released on PC it scales to the hardware. Just like the Current consoles will be low tier and the Pro and the X coming in a Mid tier, while the the new ones at being High tier. If the developer wants to make a feature that takes advantage of the new consoles then they can and those that have the new console get that feature and those that want that feature just need to get the new console. Just like the PC world, you eventually have to upgrade to get the latest and greatest.

CrimsonIdol1445d ago

"There is some fidelity stuff that we can go in maybe and do and then take advantage of, there could be also some ray tracing opportunities that could be fun to play around with. But being a co-op multiplayer game where we want players to play together on and have the same experience, it's a little hard to take advantage."
Pretty honest and self explanatory. you can't change the level design to take advantage of a faster SSD or the gameplay to include more complicated CPU intensive simulations or whatever if it also has to run and be cross platform with the the old consoles that can't do that. he IS saying you can do superficial stuff like increase visual and audio fidelity or (I imagine) support new console features. But I think that's a fair assessment he's saying that those things aren't really fully taking advantage of the new consoles abilities.

first emulation, now this
even though I don't play Garry's Mod, it is still bad

Inverno1d 18h ago

I was reading it's all just false reports from a troll who's done things like this in the past and not Nintendo themselves.

-Foxtrot1d 8h ago

Well the games creator Gary Newman confirmed it himself on Twitter.

Seems that's still being debated.
