The New Direction For Gears Of War 4's Story

We've touched on how Gears of War 4 is tweaking the gameplay to the beloved series, but with this feature we want to focus on the game's story and The Coalition's approach to storytelling for the new generation of Gears of War. While visiting the studio for our Gears of War 4 cover story, we spoke to Gears of War 4's creative director Chuck Osieja and studio head Rod Fergusson about updating the series' tone, avoiding character archetypes, and the goal of launching a larger Gears of War universe.

Watch the video interview below to learn more about The Coalition's ambitions and the story fans will experience in Gears of War 4.

Really? Your that sure that a Gears game made by a brand spanking newly formed studio (regardless if helmed by Rod F), will produce a GOTY title on its first release ever? Despite the track record for microsofts newly formed studios like 343 with veterans, your that confident it will beat out titles like uncharted, Horizon, Deus Ex, last guardian, Mass Effect, etc. ?

Amazing faith man. Keep the faith alive bro.

sammarshall1022989d ago

I'm very confident in Microsoft this gen as I've enjoyed mostly every AAA exclusive they've put out

MilkMan2990d ago

Let wait and see. From what I've seen, even with the explanation of where the story is going, I feel that this Gears is slower paced and less exciting. If true this will be a shell shock to GoW fans.

TheCommentator2990d ago

It's more like the first Gears in tone and pacing, which is awesome. The feeling of the unknown, the drakness, the tempo; they were all amazing in the first Gears. I doubt many people will feel alienated that the series is going back to it's roots and innovating from there. Assassin's creed did that in AC3 by stripping out the filler and layering on top of what worked best in terms of gameplay, and it worked well for them(then they ironically ruined it all by dragging the story through the dirt, lol). Admittedly, it's a fine line to walk in order to keep a game series fresh after many iterations, but I think The Coalition is doing Gears 4 right.

That's great news. Hopefully the Coalition can smooth some of those edges from the last Avowed reveal.

phoenixwing2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Well I'm annoyed. Especially at all the ppl who said the graphics sucked. It's your fault they probably shifted the game to unreal so it could look more fancy for you. I was ok with it and hoping to actually play it sometime soon. Now it's like 99% chance it's delayed.
Edit: effing graphics whores

Obscure_Observer2d ago

"Well I'm annoyed. Especially at all the ppl who said the graphics sucked. It's your fault they probably shifted the game to unreal so it could look more fancy for you."

What the hell are you talking about dude? Avowed was already in development using the UE5. The Coalition is just helping Obsidian in the transition to its latest version (5.3)

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Probably not even that big of a difference. Coalition might only have helped because they got a deadline to meet.

Unreal isn't nearly as bad as Unity when you update a project. Though it obviously depends on the project. But unity generally gets an aneyurism if you threaten to update, where Ue is usually less stingy.

Reaper22_2d ago

In excited for Avowed and Gears 6.

Fishy Fingers2d ago

It already was Unreal 5, its just moving to the latest build.

CantThinkOfAUsername2d ago

Latest build is 5.4 and it's better than previous iterations, particularly in animation and performance.

Lightning772d ago

Apparently the latest build looks way better graphically. This rumor from Jez Cordin (who's credible) pretty much confirms it.

Interested in seeing more on Avowed in a few weeks.

Notellin2d ago

UE 5.3 has been out since September of last year. I can't believe this is news or that anyone is hyping this up.

MrNinosan2d ago

As Hellblade failed to set the world on fire, just like Halo Infinite and Starfield before it, it's time to look forward to the next Game of the Decade candidate.
Of course it needs to be hyped up ahead of time 😏

Notellin2d ago

I didn't mean the game itself. I can't believe there is a news article about an Unreal Engine update that launched a year ago.

Reading comprehension is tough for fanboys on N4G.

got_dam1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

@MrNinosan I just want to see what Obsidian can do with a real budget and development time. They have a made a some memorable games with massive time constraints an lackluster funding.

--Onilink--1d 16h ago

Many games stick to a specific version of the Engine they had already been using to avoid delays, problems with migrations to newer stuff etc.
The version being released in September isnt really relevant, just that they decided to make the jump to it at some point in development, which is arguably good news since we know with each iteration, performance has been getting much better

MrNinosan1d 12h ago

@got_dam
I actually look forward to Avowed, and hope that's the game that finally make my purchase of Series X in 2020 worth it.
The game I actually bought Series X for was Starfield, but sadly it didn't do it for me.

Avowed however has the potential to be incredible.

ThinkThink1d 5h ago

MrNinosan, what is the last game that set the world on fire? Red Dead? GTA likely. Not every game has to set the world on fire. Those games that you mentioned fall into the 80's meta critic, and a lot of people enjoy them. And yes, I'm excited to see some of these 2024 games at the june conference.

I liked the games unique artstyle when It was revealed. I hope they're not making the migration based on criticism. It's only a rumor anyways

MrBaskerville2d ago

I imagine the art style will stay the same. But there'll probably be some visual upgrades here and there.

anast2d ago

This was the only game I was jealous of, but It's a wait and see game now. Plus, I can wait until they release it on PSN.

Miraak82 2d ago

Right!!! Obsidian is like only XB GS that I wanna play there games . Pillars of Eternity is one of my fav game franchises and I'd love to step back into the world of Eora . Their world building and rpg systems are one of the best , I hope XB higher ups don't get in the way of them. If they released it on ps I would definitely buy it day 1

anast2d ago

I bought both Pillars for PC and Console. Good games.

Working until you're more powerful is the point. There's no sense in putting in any real effort if everything just scales to you.

shinoff2183152d ago

Exactly. I've always disliked level scaling in rpgs.

Crows90152d ago

The only real reason for these types of rpgs to include level scaling is to get you to spend more time playing.

It removed entirely the feeling of becoming more powerful

sagapo152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

@Crow: although I’m not a fan of level scaling, once you reach lvl 100, the scaling stops in the open world and you can make your nighmare dungeons as hard as you want.
Going back to low level dungeons is like cutting a knife through butter, so yes, you can feel really powerful but it’s a bit pointless for rewards.

anast152d ago

Path 2 is coming out soon, so I would worry too much about Diablo at the moment.

sagapo152d ago

Path has more depth than Diablo, not everyone likes it.
I do however, looking foward to Path2 but I enjoy D4 as well. Will probably stop playing when Path 2 is out tho.

Juancho51152d ago

Path 2 looks incredible. I only played D4 a few hours, it’s not for me, became repetitive and Grundy, i already knew what I was in for and the reviews and disappointed players proved it to me. Path 2 looks BANANAS.

anast149d ago

Path 2 is going be insane. They finally added a shapeshifter!

INMATEofARKHAM150d ago

PoE 2's closed beta is scheduled for June 7th of this year. That doesn't included an open beta or changes likely to happen from feedback (Feedback that GGG is more likely to consider than most developers) so to say it's coming out soon seems to be settling one up for disappointment.

I fully expect us to be closer to a year out than anything else.

@sagapo PoE has more depth as it's been built on for a decade. I'm not saying PoE2 won't have depth at release but it won't have PoE's depth.

It's going to be a great starter point for new people to the series.

anast149d ago

"I fully expect us to be closer to a year out than anything else." nooooo

Path will still have more depth though.

v_eno_m152d ago

blizzard will always put the FU back into FUN

People still play this garbage?
Biggest waste of £60 for me.
