Metal Gear Solid 4: System Seller?

Metal Gear Solid 4 is just what long-time fans had hoped for. But is it really the kind of blockbuster hit that can move systems at a time when Sony needs the boost? PS3 Informer argues that it will please long time fans but is unlilkely to move new PS3 hardware.

The game might not sell a lot of PS3 hardware, but I bet it will sell a lot of copies of the previous games, as newcomers go back to see what they have missed.

Then later they will grab the game for ps3.

sonarus5797d ago

What are you talking about. 1st week of sales show increase in sales that even the 100 dollar price cuts couldn't match. It probably won't last but it will sell systems for at least the month of june.

pharmd5797d ago (Edited 5797d ago )

i think the bundle was a great idea.... even where i was buyin the game there were 20 or so people in line for the bundle at midnight!

@ below... good point, i was actually surprised my friend got one, he had a wii but said he's been waiting for this game to get his ps3

juuken5797d ago

...Whut?
If this game didn't sell hardware, then I don't know what will. I knew a few people who were waiting for a game like this to get a PS3.

mikeslemonade5797d ago (Edited 5797d ago )

MGS4 is a system seller but not the kind we normally see. It's a different kind of system seller because it's selling systems to the hardcore and the MGS fan base. It isn't like a Madden 2001 or a GTA Vice City where it got the casual audience. MGS4 is primarily selling a lot of systems to the hardcore.

ChampIDC5797d ago

Heck, I'm not a Playstation fan, and if I had money to throw around, I'd still buy the console for this game. Unfortunatley, I don't have money to throw around. I'll get it some day, even if I have to wait for a $50 PS3, haha.

LordXenu5797d ago

mgs4 increased ps3 weekly sales by 148% for the week

do u still call it non hw mover?

N2NOther5797d ago

143% isn't much. The initial shipment was around 70,000 units. Selling 70,000 units in one week adding up to 143% means it wasn't selling much. The game is amazing, but reality is, this isn't the system seller Sony wanted or needed. Of course people will buy the system to play the game and to that end, it is literally a system seller.

LordXenu5797d ago

78k PS3s were sold in Japan vs 120k ps3s in Us. around 150k ps3s were sold in these regions. add europe and u have over 200k.

How much did halo3 increased sales for xbox...not as much as mgs4. plus this is more like a permanent boost in Hw sales in us atleast. you would see ps3 Us sales when NPD is in

the sales would be very high too this week

Silver3605797d ago

people loved the game and that 100 dollar store card so the system was selling like crazy the last week

N2NOther5796d ago (Edited 5796d ago )

@LordXenu

I'm not saying Halo was a system seller. So not really sure why you would bring that up.

But for argument's sake...In the month directly following Halo's release, 360 sold over a million units. And in the week after Halo's release it sold almost half a million units. And let's not forget that this is essentially 2 markets because they have barely sold that many units in Japan since it's release. So it's likely those numbers can be directly related to Halo 3. Which, if so, would most certainly mean it sold more 360s in a week than MGS for PS3.

And if you really want to be technical, just look at the size of Halo's fanbase vs Metal Gears, now, mind you, I find MGS to be superior to Halo in every way imaginable (save for a Forge and the ability to save video).

No single MGS has sold as many copies as any Halo game and the last MGS (Snake Eater) sold just over 3 million.

My initial point is that a 143 % increase in sales, when you look at the amount distributed, isn't really that high a number. It's an average based on what was sold before. If you sell 1.4 units, and the week before you sold none, then you have a 140% increase. Look at the small allocation, the size of the market and you see that the number is gussied up to look better than it actually is.

It's all about perspective. I'm sure I'll get a bunch of "disagrees" which is fine, because I don't expect common sense and rationality to prevail on this matter anyway.

Ju5796d ago

If you through around numbers please put the season into the sales context. Its not Christmas. No one sells 1M right now. Nonetheless, MGS4 pushed the PS3 to number 2 globally, right behind the DS. Hasn't happened in a long time - for any other console then the Wii.

AceLuby5796d ago

"If you sell 1.4 units, and the week before you sold none, then you have a 140% increase."

No, you have an infinite increase and who sells 1.4 units?

100,000 units to 240,000 units is a 140% increase, and more than doubling the units sold is a big jump. Not only that, they shipped out less than the demand... You don't think that the bundle being sold out everywhere had something to do w/ it?

Secondly, this game is getting absolutely stunning reviews. Every magazine, paper, and other periodical, whether or not it has anything to do w/ gaming, has said 'something' regarding this game and most of it is 'I can't believe how good this game is' or 'I wasn't expecting the graphics to be this good' or 'This is the best gameplay of any game ever'. You don't think reviews like that will move consoles? You don't think that casuals would want to play what many are considering the best game ever? I know what MGS has done in the past, but there has never been a MGS game w/ this much hype AND this much delivery. Heck, there haven't been many games period w/ this much hype AND delivery. To think consoles won't be moved (which it already has done) is naive to say the least.

Montrealien5796d ago (Edited 5796d ago )

All I know is that judjement day has come and gone and we can think of other things now, like, oh I don't know....games? And to think this amazing game did not sell any systems is just plain wrong, the June numbers will show this. This is THE game playstation fans, and videogame fans a like have been waiting for.

And even if the 360 goes down in sales for the next three years, and the PS3 keeps gaining like it has been this year, we will still have two amazing consoles that have a big enough user base to encourage companies to make games for both of them, hence keeping them in competition trying to better themselves wich in the end make anybody who has both consoles swim in an amazing pool of awesomeness. All this while fanboys stroke their little e-peens among each other as they always do in forums and comments sections, fantasy creatures must have a place to think they matter right?

and lets not forget, all this is happening while Nintendo, the original king of consoles, sits on top of it all smoking cigars rolled in money spitting out a few good games a year while the casual market gets all those "other" titles that keep them happy.

hate me because I got all three current gen consoles and enjoy all games, but in the end my gamer path is the one of a true gamer and keeps me one step ahead of any brand whore fanboy.

I`m not sure if I`ll get a open zone ban for this, was I to harsh? lol

The definition of 'move'="To change in position from one point to another"- http://www.answers.com/topi...

Ps3s on Store Shelves-Person walks in to purchase Ps3 system specifically for MGS4-Pays enough money to have the Ps3 system removed from the Store shelve and put into his/her hands.

So;The Ps3 system has changed in position from one point to another. Thus,Metal Gear Solid 4 moved Playstation 3 systems.

In conclusion-Metal Gear Solid 4 is a system seller.

JokesOnYou5797d ago

in comparison Bioshock sold 490,900 copies alone in the US from Aug 21-31. 360 hardware sales rose to 276.6k for the month. In Sept Halo3 sold another 527k consoles and a record breaking 3.3 mil units for the month and it didn't even release until the end on Sept 25th. I'm pretty sure Gears sold alot of hardware and software as well.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsS...
http://www.xbox360fanboy.co...

I think its safe to say if theres such a thing as system sellers those games definitely fit the bill.

sumfood4u5796d ago

MGS4 made History for its sales. If you think that scarry wait to U see FFXIII Bundle, an Watch how People who own a PS3 will still buy this RPG~Bundle! Final Fantasy will Blow Competetion out the water & get GOTY!

CrashSharc5796d ago

I love how we are debating whether MGS4 is a system seller, and JOY just walks in and says defending Halo3 and Bioshock as system sellers.

lol, what a tool.

BigKev455797d ago

It was a great game, but once you beat it once that was it for me.

Metal Gear Online couldn't keep me playing. Next game to pick up will be Soul Caliber 4.

ChampIDC5797d ago

All depends on your preferences. It's definitely an experience for at least one time. I don't see why so many people are disagreeing with you. It's like they want to force you to love it so much that you'll play it 8 times through >.<

BigKev455797d ago

I think that's what it is, ChampIDC.
There are too many fanboys on this site.

GarandShooter5797d ago

Maybe they're disagreeing with your opinion that it's only worth a single playthrough. Maybe they don't think Soul Caliber 4 is the next game to pick up (although I do). Way to play the fanboy card though...

RememberThe3575797d ago

Dude they disagree with his opinion. Thats all it says. Why the hell to people try to draw conclusions from such little information?

BLuKhaos5797d ago

well heres a bubble to offset the disagrees

Voiceofreason5797d ago

I see no reason to disagree with someones opinion just because it isnt the same as yours when it comes to one game. Facts I'll disagree with but it takes a special person(In a rides the little bus to school kind of way) to argue over someones opinion.

otherZinc5796d ago

That was a killer post, you removed all doubt as what a system seller is.

I know chartz is off a little, but still proves the point. They actually have it at 113%, I read 110% some where else.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro59d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7259d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_59d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Killzone 2+3

Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2359d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200059d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin59d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole59d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix59d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198959d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Hideo Kojima laments that Metal Gear Solid 4's digital battlefield 'is no longer science fiction'

Game creator Hideo Kojima is and probably will always be best-known for his creation and stewardship of the Metal Gear series at Konami, which since his departure has been more-or-less on permanent hiatus (don't mention Survive). In his almost three decades these games evolved to the point where they predicted certain problems of the information age (MGS 2), took aim at contemporary topics like Guantanamo Bay (MGS: Ground Zeroes), and ended on a profound sense of sadness about our species' inability to break the cycles of global conflict (MGS V).

It's not clear what sparked this reflection, but Kojima's been thinking about Metal Gear Solid 4, an entry that was (and unfortunately still remains) a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In that entry the player controls an aged Solid Snake in the year 2014, caught up in a civil war being fought between Private Military Companies (PMCs).

Dirty_Lemons369d ago

That was a great fucking game/ movie.

DarXyde369d ago

To this day, it's one of those games where I refuse to skip the cutscenes, no matter how many playthroughs I've done.

But if you ask me...MGS2 was bloody prophetic and has aged like fine wine. That game was blasted as the weakest entry, and yet it's so enduring. I replayed it some time last year and it was remarkable.

sadraiden369d ago

Heed not the lamentations of people that say that MGS2 is bad because of the Snake/Raiden bait and switch. Every MGS game has its own merits, and while most people consider 3 to be the best, they all shine equally in my opinion.

porkChop369d ago

@sad

I would generally agree but with the exception of MGSV. It had truly excellent gameplay/combat, but dull and largely empty open world(s), and a narrative that is literally only half finished.

I really wish Kojima hadn't tried to go open world with MGS. It just wasn't right for the series. But I get it. He didn't want to make MG anymore but he wasn't allowed to make anything else. So he had to experiment within that franchise. Still, it was the wrong direction.

Santouryuu369d ago

I have been thinking about this a lot, MGS2 being the weakest and getting blasted.
My conclusion, for some years now, it's my favorite game of the series.
Going from MGS1 to MGS2 was such a big leap, in graphics, mechanics, etc.
And now it's even more relevant for being 'bloody prophetic' as you stated.

Maybe dust of my vita and play it again...

porkChop369d ago

It's a shame we never got a remaster of MGS4. The original game only rendered at 1024x768, and it ran anywhere from like 20fps to 60fps depending on the area. A remaster could have very easily cleaned up the visuals and performance. It's such a great game. I just want to play it again but in its best possible state.

MIDGETonSTILTS17369d ago

I agree, but they did all sorts of tricks to make use of the ps3’s cell processor….they’d probably have to rebuild the game in order to make it run on another machine. And, if that involves remaking those cutscenes somehow, then itll never happen, unfortunately.

porkChop369d ago

Nah. There have been plenty of remasters of PS3 games and they've turned out fine. It can be done.

PitbullMonster368d ago

Ah a man of culture. Duty calls

cell989369d ago

He was always ahead with this series. MSG1 taught me about the importance of passing on our genes into future generations but in a responsible way, for they are bound to what we experienced in our lifetime. Sons of liberty taught me about global control and simulation runs to test society in a grand scale, the importance and dangers of control of information. MGS3 taught me about patriotism and how that can blind you into doing things you never would have otherwise, all for the sake of politicians who only see you as another pawn in their grand scheme of things. MSG4 taught me war is inevitable and always orchestrated because it's great for the economy. Soon simulation systems will start dictating who goes to war and why, all run through proxies. Privatization of military company are already here. We already started to see how a small group of elites dictates everything that happens. Nothing is done, nothing happens without strings being pulled.

Eidolon369d ago

You learned all this from MGS?

Tody_ZA369d ago

All that was literally the themes and core story of each game, so not surprising he learned that from MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular is so relevant today, it was more than a decade ahead of its time and a work of genius. Kojima saw what the digital future was going to become when it was in its infancy. Even MGS 5 despite being unfinished and less of a traditional Metal Gear Solid game with regards to story, had a fair bit to say about language and control over it that is relevant today.

It's a highly acclaimed series for a reason, and one of my favourite.

Eidolon369d ago

I've watched my brother play the MGS games, but I only beat MGS1 myself on the PSP in 2014, and MGSV in 2016. I took the themes and plots as lore, tbh.. trying to piece together the story of MGS rather than relating them to our current times.

Tody_ZA369d ago

It's definitely social commentary, Eidolon. You should read the "themes and analysis" section of the Wikipedia page for MGS2: Sons of Liberty for a start! Game was heavy on this.

Eidolon369d ago

I'll take a look, thanks. Actually might pick up MGS2 again (PS Vita), It's been years since I last played. Might start a new game tbh.

sadraiden369d ago

MGS2 literally predicted digital manipulation of information that we see today all the way back in 2001. MGS2 became Zucc's playbook.

Knushwood Butt369d ago

MGS taught me not to pee my pants.

cell989369d ago

If it wasn't for the retconning of how FOXDIE works, including clunky scenes with Naomi and Liquid, MGS4 would be a perfect game. There are so many gameplay options. It felt like us PS3 owners got something truly unique and special.
