Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty – “It’s Not a (F) HD remake”

Lorne Lanning has figured out why his fans want a new Oddworld game. Just don‘t call it a remake.

Lorne Lanning is remaking his old classic platformer Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. He’s not remastering it with HD textures; he’s rebuilding it from the ground up in 2.5D with Unity, using the tools of today to develop the game a second time with the same blueprint.

yewles13716d ago

"He’s not remastering it with HD textures; he’s rebuilding it from the ground up in 2.5D with Unity, using the tools of today to develop the game a second time with the same blueprint."

That IS an HD remake.

"This new version has a new subtitle, New ‘n’ Tasty, but apparently that hasn’t been enough to keep some folks from thinking that what he and Just Add Water are making is the same kind of thing Square Enix just did with Final Fantasy X and X-2, a concept people like to refer to as an “HD remake.”"

Misconception, cases like FFX are HD remasters, no where near as dramatic as Oddworld, which is more along the lines of Halo Anniversary.

MegaRay3715d ago

Its a remake in HD, not HD remake. So he kinda right :P

"Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty – “It’s Not a (F) HD remake”"

I hope it's better then the Flashback remake.

NRGuitarist3715d ago

They are building it in the 2010s in which High Definition is the default in video games. It is a remake, yes, but the addition of the 'HD' in the moniker could cause it to be confused for a mere remastering.

It's simply because 'HD Remake' has been thrown around so much and is often used to describe re-releases that barely feature any visual improvement over their original counterparts. New 'n' Tasty, on the other hand, is a full-fledged remake built from scratch in a modern engine.

I guess Lorne just wants to clarify exactly what NnT is to people who may not know, and not have it be marketed incorrectly through the media. ¦)

Snookies123715d ago

Yeah, the ones who refer to HD remasters as 'remakes' are the ones who are getting things wrong. This is an HD remake. Most of these collections we've been seeing coming out lately are remasters. It's the difference between touching up a game to make it look prettier, and completely rebuilding a game.

To be fair, Kingdom Hearts HD had to be created from the ground up, since Square lost the original code for it. Lol.

Kennytaur3715d ago

It's not a remaster, but a remake. I understand him, but he of all people should have this clear.

Tdmd3714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

“I’d rather not make games than go fucking be a slave for public companies who care more about their shareholders than they do about their customers.”

That's cool! Go Lanning! lol
I'll buy this for ps3, ps4 and vita eventually. Love this game and it looks freaking gorgeous now!

Anyone else remember a time when games were actually finished on release??

NecrumOddBoy1052d ago

Yes, every Oddworld game on PS1. Perfect. This... this is just not good at all.

CobraKai1052d ago

Yeah. Until the PS360, devs put all their effort into making the initial release a complete package. They had no choice but to make their games run as best as possible. Extra content was unlocked through play. On the flip side tho, there were also a multitude of games that were half finished garbage. Games that couldn’t get patched. I guess in that way, patching is both a blessing and a curse. Games that need fine tuning can get patched but then there’s devs that rely on patches as a crutch to release Cyberpunk, I mean unfinished games.

1052d ago
Eonjay1051d ago

Thinks about Cyberpunk and what it would be like if it wasn't able to be patched.

CobraKai1051d ago

@Eonjay
I think it either would’ve been as it was, or delayed until it’s the playable state it’s in now. I think about No Mans Sky too. It’s a completely different game from its launch. Or how we wouldn’t have gotten refinement patches for Miles Morales or Rift Apart.

CrimsonWing691051d ago

Same time we actually got a variety of unique IPs and not GaaS games, DLC, or micro transactions. Long gone are those golden days of gaming.

garos821051d ago

game breaking bugs prevented me from enjoying this game. it got deleted to make space for something else to play and i dont see myself unfortunately returning to it

KingofBandits1051d ago

Shame they didn't delay the physical release to include this patch. So at least one version would be complete in that regard

What happened to 4k60, Sony?
Was that a lie?
Will we find out in a year or two that the SSD does nothing outside of improving load times as well?

BattleCat1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

So did Sony tell US, that every game will be 4k/60fps? It was the green side, and even they can't hold it on many games.

CaptainHenry9161162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

What else is funny is that sometimes the PS5 outperforms it in certain games 🤔🤦‍♂️😂

Jin_Sakai1162d ago

Reminds me how Microsoft marketed Xbox Series S as 1440p 60fps console and recently revoked those claims to a 1080p 60fps console.

Common sense should tell you half of what these companies claim aren’t realistic.

AngelicIceDiamond1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

"and recently revoked those claims to a 1080p 60fps console."

Not true. What Teamico said isn't true but your statement isn't true either. MS never revoked any claims about the S's output. In fact Outriders is 4k on the S.

darthv721162d ago

The tourist is 4k on series s and ori is 4k60 on series s.

dantesparda1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

@AngelicIceDiamond

MS most certainly did say that, look it up, FACT! And Outriders runs better on the PS5.

Ugh you and Darth are idiots. We are not saying it cant hit 4k on any games but rather that on average its not a 1440p/60fps system but rather a 1080p (more or less)/60fpssystem. Now get real you idiots

gravedigger1162d ago

Em...when Sony said that games will be 4k/60?

CrimsonWing691162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

https://www.cnet.com/news/s...

"In his conversation with CNET, Ryan said an SSD storage drive Sony custom-designed for the console will be offered as part of the default version. He also added that the device will offer ultra-high definition 4K visuals at 120Hz, which is twice the screen refresh rate of most TVs."

I mean I guess technically you're right since he's claiming 4K/120fps... and not 4K/60fps, but It's Jim Ryan, though. The dude is an absolute toolbox in my opinion.

gravedigger1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

"He also added that the device will offer ultra-high definition 4K visuals at 120Hz, which is twice the screen refresh rate of most TVs."

Will offer.... When will offer and where, though? That doesn't sound like "will be". :/ Literally it isn't sound like confirmation at all.

AngelicIceDiamond1162d ago

"what happened to it"

Nothing happened to it. There's PLENTY of 4k 60 games out there on PS5.

Espangerish1162d ago

Sony never promised that and not even an RTX 3090 - a £1400 GPU - can hit 4k 60fps on all new releases without compromising settings.

I’d be happy with 1440p 60fps or 4k 30fps. Happy medium between graphics quality and performance. To hit native 4k at 60fps keeps graphics in the last gen era. I think that’s too much of a compromise.

phoenixwing1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

i play on a 1440p monitor with my 2070 super. except it's a smaller screen so visual fidelity ratio is as good as a 4k screen. sony on the other hand usually has their games played on a big screen tv...

in all fairness i don't think this is that big of a deal. it's diminishing returns after 1080p anything over is gravy in my book

sagapo1162d ago

I’m happy with a1440p ouput as I play on a monitor, but Sony doesn’t support this resolution officialy. With a good screen you get a downscale from a 4K signal, which looks pretty good, or in worst case an upgraded 1080p signal, which looks meh.

Profchaos1162d ago

Sony has never said 4k60 they stated the machine is capable of up to 8k never once did they state that all games are going to be 4k 60 that's Microsoft who said their series X will play everything at 4k60 and they don't live up to that promise either like in the X1 days they said everything is 1080 cause the machine Performs upscaling

waverider1162d ago

I think you are talking about other console, maybe the one you got. Those were the one talking about flops for a year... About the SSD... You really dont understand how games are build do you? You know that google is a good tool to learn. There are tons of news explaining what we can expect. But bad are gamers that waste money on consoles that cant even play games at locked 1080p at 2021 with crossgen games.

dantesparda1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

@TeamIcoFan

While I agree that both systems are coming off as complete and utter letdowns performance/spec-wise. 1440p for a PS5 game, really? And wtf are you directing your fanboy bull$hit at Sony when MS was the one promising uncompromised 4k/60fps pixels with the XbX? The XsX is a even bigger letdown since its supposed to be more powerful and yet performs even worst.

mike32UK1161d ago

When will you fan boys learn? Sony/MS can give the developers all the tools they need but it's down to their own decisions what they want to push for (graphical fidelity vs performance).

It's all a big balancing act

fr0sty1161d ago

Ratchet & Clank already proved the SSD is doing far more than just better load times. Nice try, take that FUD elsewhere.

Flewid6381161d ago

There are games that run at 4K/60fps on PS5.

The fact that you dont know what they are doesnt make anything a lie. lmao.

Super hyped for more Oddworld - and it's free (for PS+ subscribers) which is even better!

Little bit disappointed that it isn't higher res - I was expecting 4k60 for this game, but super glad its 60 at least, that is essential for platforming. 30fps on the PS4 version is kinda brutal though.

Father__Merrin1162d ago

Looks good but it's clear it's a ps4 title upgraded to use ps5 features. It should be 4k but tbh if it's a cross over title the 2k image will still look good.

Sol4ris1162d ago

^. It should be 4k but tbh if it's a cross over title the 2k image will still look good.^

Not sure why you think that.
If the PS5 could push the game at 4K60fps the developer would give you the option, but clearly it's not the case here. Hence why it's 1440p@60, the best compromise the developers could make.

waverider1162d ago

dude, do you know even the kind of game? This is a quick crossgen game.

Sol4ris1161d ago

@waverider

^dude, do you know even the kind of game? This is a quick crossgen game.^

Yes I do. You are the one struggling to understand that just because is a cross gen game, it should run on a Casio.
The PS5 & Xbox Series X| are not high end gaming PC. Compromises need to be made.
